Reading that Fenerbahce's being expelled and we're being mentioned as replacement. Surely a piss take?

Chairman of Turkish premier league champions arrested in match-fixing probe

Aziz Yildirim, chairman of last season's Spor Toto Super League champions Fenerbahce, was arrested and sent to prison on Sunday, after days of interrogation as part of a match-fixing investigation that has recently shaken Turkey.

AA

ISTANBUL/DUZCE- Yildirim, who was detained last Sunday within the scope of an investigation into the nationwide match-fixing scandal, was arrested by the Istanbul 14th High Criminal Court on duty yesterday, and sent to Metris prison.

The 59-year-old chairman was arrested on charges of "setting up & managing a criminal organization" and "match-fixing".

As Yildirim was under interrogation at the courthouse in Istanbul's Besiktas district, Fenerbahce fans gathered at Bagdat Street on the other side of the city to protest the investigation. In the meantime, thousands of fans travelled to northwestern Duzce province, where Fenerbahce players are currently on a training camp, to show their love and support.

Commenting on yesterday's arrest, football experts said that chairman Yildirim was also faced with the risk of being expelled from Fenerbahce Sports Club due to the club's regulations on disciplinary actions.

If convicted as a result of the judiciary process, Yildirim, who has been Fenerbahce's chairman for 13 years, will no longer be a member of the sports club, sources said.

On July 3, Turkish police waged operations in several Turkish provinces and searched premises of several football clubs, detaining scores including first division club players and executives in connection with match-fixing charges. Suspects included Aziz Yildirim, chairman of last season's champions Fenerbahce, a number of club officials, players and executives from several Turkish teams.

During his week-long interrogation, Yildirim was hospitalized several times due to his health problems and also went through an angiography.

Just hearing Liverpool could be in the Champions League as a result of Fenerbahce being expelled. When a team is expelled UEFA may give the place to the team with the highest co-efficient not currently in Europe. However - no nation can have more than four teams in the Champions League so all may rest on Arsenal losing? Trying to get confirmation.

It's utter bullshit and what's more we finished 6th not 5th ... Spurs would go in not us.
[/quote]

Based on co-efficient standing not finishing league position. I still don't want it.

they are already in europe.

they should just do a lucky loser with the 10 teams who dont qualify from this weeks matches, or a wwf style Royal Rumble ;D

I'd laugh my balls off if we got handed a CL spot.

It would be one of the most ridiculous things ever.

Fenerbahce will not play in the Champions League this season due to an ongoing match-fixing investigation, the Turkish Football Federation has confirmed. The announcement comes on the eve of the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on Thursday.

According to a statement on the TFF website, Uefa wrote to the federation on Tuesday to demand Fenerbahce's withdrawal, threatening wider disciplinary action against the TFF should they fail to do so. The letter was forwarded to Fenerbahce, who declined to withdraw.

"In the face of this development, on 24 August an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors was held to discuss the threat of the Turkish Football Federation being exposed to severe disciplinary sanctions if Fenerbahce took part in the Uefa Champions League this season, and it was decided to bar them from participating," the statement said.

Fenerbahce were crowned league champions last season, beating Trabzonspor to the Super Lig title with a dramatic 4-3 win at Sivasspor on the final day.

The final standings remain official, but the Fenerbahce president, Aziz Yildirim, is one of more than 30 people held in custody pending trial on the matter.

For all those saying they don't want to enter the comp this way, is it recorded that Denmark got to the Euro 92 finals by default or that they won the tournament.

I would love us to be in the Champs league this season, especially if it meant that Arsenal were playing in the Europa league.

That said it is all clearly a lot of bollix

It's of course very very very unlikely but if we were offered it I'd bite their hand off.

But what if Arsenal win??

It would be fucking great if we get back in the CL but I really don't see it happening. I also don't like having to cheer for Arsenal on the off chance.

There is a rule no more than 4 clubs from one country.

haha, this is gathering pace. Some United forum I have just seen is sick about the idea, but sees the logic.
It is easier to invite someone not involved at all in Europe than people that are or have been. Also from a financial aspect which is the real driver with UEFA it makes sense to invite us. Wouldnt Arse be sick if they went out and we went in. If they do go out it makes things easy from the 4 clubs rule. They have done us a favour before.... We could even win the fucker.........

So ... Arsenal can't lose then even If they lose they are in for their coefficient.

Dunno, could be it's chosen from those not in Europe at all. Who knows.

e.but if Arsenal win we are defo out I think so there's more reason to cheer for Udinese tonight 😉

They should give it to another Turkish team instead maybe... Would be fairer.... Or of course they give it to us and we win the fucker again even though we got in all sneaky like.

Imagine if we won the fucker again .... The mancs would spontaneously combust.

Two things.
One it should go to the next placed Turkish side OBVIOUSLY.

If it doesnt it should go to the highest co-efficient who qualified but has been knocked out IE:Arsenal or Udinese.

It would be a fucking joke if a team who didnt qualify got the nod. It wont happen, it cant happen. And i dont fucking want it.
