Liverpool enter race for Cliftonville's Rory Donnelly

So Cliftonville apparently raised the fee as Everton's bid was higher than Swansea's - fair enough imo, to capitalize on the interest on the lad. Latest news is Swansea's back in the running with a increased/matched offer.

Meanwhile, from The Independent:
The never ending hunt for fresh, exciting talent has taken scouts to all corners of the globe in recent years, but as Premier League clubs begin to tighten their belts and look closer to home for reinforcements, they are starting to notice a hotbed of prospects right under their noses.

Look no further than the Emerald Isle, where the likes of Kevin Doyle, Shane Long and Seamus Coleman have blazed a new trial for Irish players, after being plucked from the obscure league systems and turned into established top flight performers. It's taken a while for those examples to shine through, but now more and more clubs are being alerted to the cheap, adaptable talent just a ferry ride away.

Few know the current buzz about Irish prospects better than Cliftonville striker Rory Donnelly , seen by many as the best player to grace the little known IFA Premiership for years, and currently subject to intense scouting from around 15 English clubs. It's a sign of just how highly rated he, and the region, are becoming.

Donnelly is all but certain to leave Northern Ireland for the Premier League when the transfer window opens on January 1st, but after holding talks with Liverpool and Swansea, his decision has been complicated by Everton now lodging the highest bid. On top of that, Arsenal and Manchester United both made personal checks this week, and are expected to show their hand shortly. It must all come as a shock to a 19-year-old boy who is yet to go full time in the game.

The interest comes after a sensational start to the season, in which Donnelly has scored 13 goals in the opening 18 games, including four against the league's top side, Ballymena United. He caught the eye there, but has since kicked on, and sits on 17 for the campaign at present, before Cliftonville opted to bench their prize asset to avoid injury. The offers have since flowed.

It's always hard to gauge a players true ability when they're in a developing league, but based on the evidence so far, Donnelly has the raw abilities that can easily be transferred to life in the English top flight: pace, strength and work rate. Interested parties will be paying around £100,000 for his services, and for that price, shouldn't expected an all action, versatile centre forward, but if there is one thing he does bring, it's a goal threat.

Donnelly is a classic number nine, thriving on scraps and always looking to run in behind defenders
, where he uses his pace and good composure to finish confidently. He's not afraid to drift wide when required, where he's a decent dribbler, and has mature decision making in his final ball.

However, Donnelly is all about converting chances, not making them. He uses his strong, six foot two inch frame to excellent effect, where he can bully defenders into submission, while also being powerful and clinical in the air. Add to that his solid work ethics and desire to chase lost causes, and he's a simple striker, but a real handful for any defender.

There is much to learn for young Donnelly , such as better link up play, leading the line and knowing when to hold and release the ball, as well as some general raw abilities than need refining, but he's a player who thrives on instincts, and they're just fine.

Overall, it's easy to see why Donnelly is worth the punt. He's got pace, power and strength, is a natural goalscorer with either foot, and is dominant in the air. Add to that his work off the ball, endless chasing and a open desire to learn, and £100,000 looks like being a real bargain.

I hope it's not a case of the Emperors clothes.

He can't be that good.

Northern Ireland under-21 striker Rory Donnelly has agreed terms on a move to Premier League side Swansea City

The Welsh club has agreed a fee with Irish Premiership side Cliftonville to sign the 19-year-old and Donnelly has accepted personal terms in principle.

"I think we now have an agreement on both sides in terms of Cliftonville and personal terms with the player," said Swans boss Brendan Rodgers.

"So we hope to complete that fairly soon."

Swansea had a £100,000 bid accepted for Donnelly two weeks ago but Everton looked to be favourites for his signature when they made a higher offer before Christmas.

But Swansea are closing in on signing Donnelly, who it is understood always favoured a move to south Wales, after making an improved bid.

Donnelly, who had also held talks with Liverpool, was in Swansea last week to visit the Liberty Stadium and the club's training facilities.

Now Swansea hope he can undergo his medical on Friday and complete his move when the January transfer window opens on Sunday.

"He will be over here for the game against Tottenham on Saturday," said Rodgers.

"We will look to complete the medical tomorrow and get that put to bed and the boy can then come over and work on developing his game.

"I will talk more about him once the deal is done but he is coming here without pressure, he is coming from a part-time level.

"He has shone in the early part of the season and there have been other clubs interested, but we will talk more once he signs the papers."

Cliftonville boss Tommy Breslin believes the personal touch of Swansea's manager Rodgers, a fellow Northern Irishman, was significant.

Breslin said: "Rory said that he was impressed by Swansea and by what Brendan Rodgers had to say.

"He said the facilities were good and that there was a great team spirit with no egos. The Northern Irish link with Brendan probably helped too."

Donnelly is set to be Swansea's first signing of the January transfer window and Rodgers wants "a couple of players" to aid their Premier League survival bid as the Swans have won just once in eight games.

Smart move. He wouldn't have got a look in at Liverpool, will be interesting to see if they play him or loan him out.

Fair fucks to him , the lure to come to us must have been strong but he's probably made a smarter move for himself . If he's good enough then a bigger club will come calling again .

You only have to look at the likes of Wilson and see how it doesn't work out sometimes and the club aren't great at developing youth ...i mean why is Wilson not out on loan ? Why aren't alot more of them out on loan ? we've seen with Shelvey how 1st team football at a good standard can help a player .

RORY Donnelly hopes Swansea City will give him a chance to shine after he turned down Liverpool and Everton to sign a three-and-a-half year deal at the Liberty.

The Cliftonville starlet completed his move to Swansea last night after passing a medical and arrives for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

Donnelly faces a giant jump in standard as he swaps part-time football for the Premier League.

But the 19-year-old reckons working under Brendan Rodgers will give him the best chance of success.

"Everything has happened so quickly that I still can't quite believe it," Donnelly said. "It's a dream come true. I was really impressed with what the manager had to say when I met him.

"I believe I am signing for a brilliant manager who is prepared to give youth a chance.

"I met the likes of Scott Sinclair and Joe Allen when I was over here last week and it only reinforced the belief that Swansea is the right club for me.

"I know there was serious interest from Everton and Liverpool, but I love the way Swansea play the game and I think it will suit me.

"The manager has shown a lot of faith in me and hopefully in time I can repay him with plenty of goals."

Northern Ireland Under-21 international Donnelly has turned heads with his sparkling performances in the IFA Premiership this season. He had already fired 17 goals before being benched by Cliftonville earlier this month as they wrapped their prize asset in cotton wool.

At 6ft 2in, he has good presence and looks a natural finisher.

"We are delighted to be able to attract one of Northern Ireland's biggest talents," Rodgers said. "I am really looking forward to helping Rory fulfil his potential and, hopefully, over the next few years ensuring that Swansea City have another exciting young player blossoming at the club."

The paperwork on Donnelly's move will be processed once the transfer window opens tomorrow, and he will join up with the Swansea squad in the middle of next week.
