Still might get him

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

I've convinced mysf that FSG will make some kind of statement this window.

I hope it's firing Budgie, and binning Lucarse, Cuntchesky and Crapsen, but failing that, I do expect some money to be spent on one or two promising players.

I doubt they'll want to hobble along until summer with things exactly as they are

I would cry tears of joy if those 4 things happen this month.

Elia has also travelled to the training camp in Dubai with Hamburg's team.

I don't rate him anyway Fabio, I think he needs to grow a brain before he's capable of being a consistent performer and I think he's a fucking shit defender, I just haven't heard many people banging on about his crossing ability.
It's my dfence why i don't think he'd be a good winger. And when it was initially mentioned people said he could. I'm just still waiting. I think he's overrated myself and i'd much rather have arbeloa back. Solid. Dependable. Could play both sides. Rarely fucked up. A simple footballer but a very good one
Agreed, I think he was a great fullback 🙁
Yep, he was. And we sold him for what £4m? A 25yo Spanish international to Real Madrid and we get £4m, we are only ones capable of that.
Arbeloa wanted to return to Spain. Why can people not get their heads around this fact? As far as I recall he would have been a free agent the following year.

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

Many moaned about him whilst he was here claiming he was average or not very good anyways.

I liked him. He was one of Rafa's shrewdest signings given the price he came in for. It's a shame we couldn't hold onto him really.

loved arbeloa 🙁

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

Yes I liked him as well and would have been happy to keep him. I just think there are people here who look back and remember a better player than he actually was.

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

I was never a huge fan, although I'd have preferred him to Insua, Dross or Cuntchesky at LB

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

I liked Arbeloa, there was a spell when he and Pennant linked up quite well which was promising until Pennant was released.

People know he wanted to go but the question would be why. There's the obvious reason of homesickness, but I think there's more to it than that. His bust up with carra on the last game showed a frayed relationship with not only carra, but the squad, based on the reaction the rest of the team gave.

Still it's all ancient history now

You've gone from berating their lack of action & ability to run the club to expecting desisive action pretty quickly.

Heard something on the grapevine?

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

I just think it seems obvious, there are alot of noises in the press and with the fans being more or less unanimous against Roy, they know they must make a statement one way or the other.

Yeah they excelled against Arsenal once or twice as a pair. I really liked Arbeloa. He had a penchant of giving away ratty free's but I liked his ability to win the ball back high up the pitch. He came for half nothing and could play on either flank.

Why do you think I don't know he wanted to leave? Even if he had only a year left on his contract and wanted to leave I think he was sold too cheap. I recall far lesser players being sold for far more that summer. It was one of those years when teams were throwing away bucketloads of money wasn't it? We also need to stop letting our better players' contracts run down.

Arbeloa was always going to want to join the Madrid 'revolution' under Mourinho. Add that to the onfield row he had with Carragher. Perhaps we should have kept him for LB and then allowed him leave on a free but we took the money at the time. I don't think Arbeloa was ever going to sign a new contract was he?

There were rumours doing the rounds that Arbeloa wanted to leave the season before he did (family issues apparently ???) and was persuaded to hang on for one more season while we lined up a suitable replacement.
I liked Arbeloa but ultimately I think Finnan, who he was bought to replace was a better player at his peak

Mourinho wasn't there back then, though.

I had forgotten the row with Carra and all that actually and I guess we were in a very bad(if not impossible) position to bargain. We just always seem to play too nice and never show any balls when negotiating. Especially with Real, we always end up bending over.

I think the fullbacks gets to much worry on this forum. We clearly cant manage the engine room to work, and then we can have which ever fullbacks we want without them winning us anything.

GJ would have been an excellent addition to a team with i.e. Mascher and Xabi commanding the midfield... But he will struggle when Lucas/Poulsen etc are supposed to do the same.

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

Arbeloa was a good, solid, reliable full back who was rarely injured.

He wasn't as good as Finnan, but he wasn't miles off.

We've missed him a bit since he's gone, but now Kelly is on the scene I think we're now sorted at RB.

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

Remember that bit where Arbeloa was on about how he'd love to join Madrid as they're so massive but Adidas told him Liverpool were their biggest brand - they sell more of our shirts than theirs? That surprised me.

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

The Spain international also admitted the threat of a 50p tax rate for those earning £150,000 and over would encourage a talent drain out of the Premier League, confirming concerns made by the Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger.

Arbeloa said: "In the last few years the Premier League has been much better than the Spanish league, but now that may even out thanks to factors that could give the Premier League more problems than in previous years, like the fall of the pound and the raise in taxes. They will make a lot of players move to Spain. Mind you, Adidas told me that the Liverpool shirt is their best seller, more so even than Madrid, so that shows that the Premier League has reached every corner of the world."

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

The Telegraph are running the story about Elia today. Interesting given Rory Smith's denial of the rumour yesterday.

Liverpool are poised to move for Dutch international Eljero Elia of Hamburg as Roy Hodgson looks to find a striker to take some of the goalscoring burden off Fernando Torres' shoulders.

Elia was part of the Dutch squad at last summer’s World Cup finals in South Africa and at 24 years old fits in to Liverpool director of football strategy Damien Comolli’s plans of injecting youth in to the squad.

Hodgson would like to add a host of players to his underperforming side though doubts exist over both his future at the club and the new owners’ willingness to free up funds during the January transfer window when value and depth is absent from the market.

Elia would cost upwards of £10m and Hodgson would need to raise at least part of that through sales before New England Sports Ventures would sanction the move. Ryan Babel is almost certain to leave should Liverpool receive an acceptable offer with Birmingham City set to renew their interest in the Dutchman.

Should the move break down Liverpool are also monitoring Ivory Coast international Lacina Traoré, Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge and Ajax forward Luis Suarez.

Liverpool’s bid for Elia might be compromised, however, by Manchester City. Roberto Mancini is poised to lavish around £30m on Wolfsburg striker Edin Dzeko, with the German club intent on spending some of that windfall on a move for Elia.

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

Started in Hamburg's friendly today.

Hamburger SV: Rost (46. Drobny) - Rincón, Besic, Westermann (46. Demel), Aogo (46. Pressel) - Kacar (46. Jarolim), Zé Roberto (46. Tesche) - Elia (46. Jansen), Pitroipa (46. Choupo-Moting)- Guerrero (46. Torun), van Nistelrooy (46. Ben-Hatira)

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

How can we still be poised to make a move?

With the window open for as days already should we not have made our first signing by now? Is Comoli and Roy dithering by flying all over to watch players only?

Ever heard of negotiations, Roland?

Re: Liverpool bid to land Hamburg striker Elijero Elia for £5m in January

Actually did Bunny but I would of thought that the identified players and clubs would have been approached and spoken to before the window opened.

It should have just been formalities now.

Look at Barca, wasn't the Afellay deal done before the window opened?
