Looking at the league table we are about 13-16 points off third spot, for the Champions League.

Is this an unbridgeable gap? On the basis of past performances and future predictors, here's some points I think we could have picked up this year, that shows how close or how far away we were from rejoining the CL.

Had these results gone to wins for us, we'd be back in the CL.

West Brom - 6 points.
Man City @ home - 2 points
Man U @ home - 3 points
Newcastle @ home - 2 points
Sunderland away - 2 points

There's games in there we should have won, and teams we should have beaten. Honestly, I think if we mentally start to believe we could be back in the CL, it will happen. It's well achievable.

The league is another ball game entirely, 32 points to be gained. Woof!

We are not top 4 contenders. A mediocre transfer window and a slow start next season could see us slip further.

We've drawn 13 games this season, and we've deserved to win most of those. If we could even convert half next season into wins, we'd be back in.
We'll have 20-30mill quid to spend in the summer, plus maybe the money from carroll, skrtel and a couple of others. If he can spend that on Coutinho/Sturridge class sort of players.....
I'm optimistic under rodgers that'll we'll be back.

We ain't going to catch Utd, Maureen back to Chelsea will bag them another 10 points next season, City no chance, Arsenal will probably improve, Spurs unknown.
It's a big ask if we're not going to spend a gazillion pounds. I know we drew a few games here and there that maybe we should have won. But, would turning those games into wins give us the 15 or so points that we'll likely need next season? Probably not.
We're more or less at the right place in the League, let's not underestimate the task.

We could easily improve on how we did this season, and I don't think that anything has fundamentally changed in terms of the other teams. If we keep buying players of the quality we have recently, we'll be fine. There is so much work to be done in some really important positions though, especially at CB, so we'll see how well we make replacements there.

It sounds like we'll have another large transfer budget and many of the targets rumoured thus far have been really promising, and our form since January *seems* to have been reasonably good (not sure what the stats actually say), and players like Sturridge, Coutinho, Henderson, and Allen should continue to improve with age, so I think we have every reason believe we can get 70 points or so. Obviously the problem these days is that Man City and Spurs are so strong, so whatever we do it's still going to be tough.

But reason to hope, I think.

I guess the point is when we stop talking and buying into how great the other teams are (because they are not frankly that much better) and we focus on our own game, and win the games I mentioned above, it's quite attainable to be back in the CL. Think about it. 5 wins away from the CL, and in many of 'em we deserved a win.

These are the things to focus on. Not who man city will sign

I'm tired of talking about other teams. We've got a good basis to leap forward now

Honestly this is more pessimistic than I think we need to be. We've got a solid base, and a little more quality like January, we'll really push on. Brendan will do better next season, I'm sure of it. He's already done a lot. And the youth, the youth!

Yes but how many games did we win or draw where we probably deserved to lose or draw?
The biggest difference will be not having a cnut of an opening 5 fixtures.

You're right mate, its not pessimistic at all, we have the same discussion every year.
I'll see who we get rid of and who we sign before I wheel out any predictions. Nothing wrong with being optimistic but, this time last year, a lot of people on here thought we just needed to hit the post less to challenge.
I'll stick to realistic thanks.
