Simple question: sell Coutinho or keep?

While it's probably nothing but a wet dream of mine, I don't think the idea is completely ludicrous.. maybe it has even crossed someone's mind within the club.

In February this year Klopp revealed in an interview that he wanted Ajax-Eriksen back when he was manager at Dortmund and he then went on - and I quote - saying:

  • Christian Eriksen is a fantastic player. Everyone would love to have him in their team.

So my question still remains, would it be possible to sway Levy with a great sum of money or would he by no means let one of his key players leave at this stage?

PS In the same interview as I referred to above, when Klopp asked whether he would like to see Eriksen playing for Liverpool, he glanced at his personal manager who's always present at interviews making sure he doesn't say something he shouldn't, before he answered with a smile..
  • No, I don't think we do business with Tottenham.

Levy is very shrewd negotiator (19m for wimmer who'd done the square root of fuck all), so I doubt we'd be able to get Eriksen for less than we'd get Coutinho

In all seriousness, no I don't think Levy will sell to us. We ARE a direct rival and if Eriksen wanted to go there would be plenty of other takers.

Moreover, I don't think he is a player we would be interested in. Well not enough to go balls out mental VVD style to prise him away.

Keep. Makes a big statement for those thinking that FSG are only in it for the money.

Sell.

Even before all these transfer shenanigans about Coutinho's future I was slightly undecided on just how good he actually is. Don't get me wrong when he is on song he's an absolutely wonderful player to behold and one that will make any team better.

However, and this is my biggest qualm with him, I don't think he's one you can really rely on to deliver continuously over the course of a season. Not like Gerrard, not like Suarez, not even like Torres at his prime.

Strange, as I think he's made a point of stepped up massively even though it's maybe not his forte.

People have complained about him shooting a lot more than he used to, for example, but he does that because he feels he needs to take responsibility for making something happen. And there is no small amount of truth in the fact that quite regularly we've needed him to.

I might be wrong but I see something similar happening with Mane now. Someone said the other day that Mane is very economic with the ball but I think he's started holding onto it that bit longer and trying to do things on his own a little bit more now as he's taken on the role of "make shit happen".

Some players might thrive with that extra responsibility but I don't think it's good for them or the team.

I think Klopp has designed a lot of his offensive formations with Coutinho in mind, so it is horrible to consider losing him before we see how it plays out. The idea of an attacking diamond with Firmino, Salah, Mane and Coutinho is mouth-watering. It has the potential to be absolutely amongst the most exciting things any of us have seen from a Liverpool team. Little rat cunt.

That truly is a mouth-watering line-up.. bit strange really if Coutinho can't see that himself.

I agree with that completely. And I for one don't want Coutinho to be the first in line when the going gets tough, but I do feel he somehow have had a tendency to disappear in games when we are struggling. He might have improved on this lately and maybe he can continue to do so.

I am really on the fence here because I, as you, can see how incredibly he can be and it's easy to imagine just how brilliant we'd be if he could continue his developments whilst linking up with Salah, Mane and Firmino as Doc just highlighted.

Some of it though is more down to wishes/expectations rather than actual visual proof that he can become a real force over the full course of the season.

Hypothetically if someone could guarantee that he'd be completely committed to the course, played his best football and stayed clear of injury over the course of the season I wouldn't swap him with anyone, not even Eriksen. That is just a lot of 'ifs'..

I am resigned to Klopp having told PC that he can leave next summer, to give us time to both recruit a replacement and look to promote from within. If Lemar was identified and can be bought this window - i'm game for that transaction. If not, he won't lose any material value this year and might even have a stormer of a world cup.

Would you want to keep Coutinho if it meant losing Lemar?

Barcelona could scupper Liverpool's attempts to sign Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar after naming him as a potential 'Plan B' to Philippe Coutinho, Mundo Deportivo has claimed.

With Liverpool refusing to negotiate a deal for the Brazilian playmaker, Barcelona are ready to turn their attentions towards another big-name signing ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

Lemar makes the three-man shortlist alongside Juventus star Paulo Dybala and Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, potentially getting in Liverpool's way once more following their relentless pursuit of Coutinho.

Keep. Obviously.

If we're trying to add depth to our squad, selling off our best players is what you DON'T fucking do.

Yes, most definitely.

Just like they tried to do with Keita before we signed him up.

It's almost as if they're trying to force us to negotiate...

I would keep. Come October, when we are back to back with games, this will all be forgotten about.

He's a shit house rat who I'd replace in a heart beat if we could

But it seems we can't so ho hum

Forgive me for my silliness, but what would happen if..

We pushed most of what we got for Coutinho into the centre of Levy's table asking for Eriksen?

All bias aside, his stats suggests he'd be an even more industrious player for us than the Brazilian, he's rarely injured, got amazing awareness, quick feet and mind and he's already running more than anyone else in the league. Imagine him in the role behind Mane, Salah and Firmino and you'd visualize about a thousand assists per year..

Tailor made for Klopp's type of football really.

THOUGHTS!?

I'd push ALL of what we got for Eriksen. For me, he's a better player in CM/AM and the assists says as much. The only thing Coutinho has on him is a bit more skill and the versatility to play LW. Eriksen is more consistent and will win more games with his creativity against the teams that park the bus. He just knows how to dictate the tempo of a game. Maybe Coutinho can do that, but he hasn't shown it as consistently.

Well, I am glad that as predicted, this resembles nothing like the Torres saga when he was branded a traitor and a Judas for forcing his way out of the club

He isn't trying to join Chelsea, though.

On the other hand, Torres was dead right to leave; the club had a shit manager, a terrible team and even worse owners. I don't think Dalglish and FSG came in early enough before the rot and disenchantment had already set in.

Coutinho wants to leave a set-up that is superior in almost every way, apart from Gerrard being in the side.

Duncan Castles says Coutinho has been told he can leave, which makes me want him to stay even more. I fucking hate Duncan Castles.
Hasn't he been wrong numerous times on coutinho so far?
He was the mug that perpetuated that a deal was agreed for £72m or whatever it was about a month ago!

Any chance we can also get Barca to throw in Seung-Woo. He looks an amazing prospect.
