It's true that he played more on the right than on the left. I start from the view that as our best ever all-rounder (IMO of course) he has to be in somewhere, and I slot him in at LB because he did play there reasonably often and because in my view there are other outstanding candidates for RB, and for the wide midfield positions where he also played (not to mention CB where he spent a season during which we set some kind of record for fewest goals conceded), but not so many outstanding candidates for the other fullback slot, though Robbo could well get the nod if he keeps on the way he's going.

Yes. Kenny and Souness and Jockey used to tease the English lads about Scotland being superior all the time... Then Steve Nicol arrived and undid all of their good work (per somebody's autobiography).

Not for me. Good player right enough (apart from anything else his goals won two European Cup Finals!) and I've actually met him and got on well with him, but I'd be looking for more in a Liverpool All-Time XI squad member.

While we're on the subject though, the McAteer thing puzzles me a bit. Listening to interviews with him since his retirement, I've heard someone who seems reasonably bright and is certainly articulate. It's made me wonder whether he was acting a role in this respect during his playing days.
Imagine getting the outfield players virtually perfect in every position, only to recklessly throw it all away with the keeper.
The fucking great thing is that half that team are here right now.
The bad thing is that the youthful running, fitness and determination that earned them their spots in that team is now in the past.
At times he pulled off saves few other keepers would even attempt. At other times he made mistakes few circus clowns would even attempt.

Mané v Barnes is the toughest call. Hyypia narrowly loses out to Lawro simply because I'm playing 3 at the back and I need the pace of Hansen and Lawro to cover my marauding "wing backs" of Salah/Mané.
My best 11 hardly changed over the last 30 years; Suarez was the only "new" addition for many seasons so it's fucking awesome that we are brilliant again and I have new faces in my best 11. Mané, Salah and Van Dijk have replaced McDermott, Barnes and Hughes*.
*Crazy Horse still remains my favourite all time player though.

That's really close to mine. I'd have both Barnes and Mane in at the expense of Jocky, probably because I was too young to really appreciate him.
I also always get stuck choosing between Keegan, Fowler and Owen. I loved them all in completely different ways.
For me Keegan was the talisman who transformed us from relatively successful side into the top team in Europe and began our 17 season domination of the English league. Fowler and Owen were merely brilliant.
