Jurgen Klopp has confirmed three players who will start for Liverpool against Leicester City on Tuesday night in the League Cup third round.

The Reds take on the Foxes in their first of two trips to the King Power Stadium this week, as they look for a return to positive form following a disappointing slump.
Klopp made seven changes to his side for Saturday’s home clash with Burnley in the Premier League, but saw Liverpool stutter, held to a 1-1 draw.

The German is likely to rotate his squad further against Leicester, and speaking on Monday afternoon he confirmed that Danny Ward, Marko Grujic and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would all start.
“We have a lot of players who are in good shape,” he told reporters at Melwood.
Marko Grujic made a big step in his development, but nobody could see it so far. It’s really good to give him the opportunity.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for Alex to go in. Since he joined it’s been pretty difficult to train on different things because it’s game after game after game.
“He also had a wonderful impact when he came on in the last game [against Burnley].”

Klopp also suggested that Jon Flanagan was “in the mix,” but the full-back’s involvement depends on the fitness of Dejan Lovren.
Lovren was on the bench on Saturday due to a back problem, and if he misses out on Tuesday it is likely that Joe Gomez will come in at centre-back, with Flanagan among the options at right-back.

“We have to see how I make the squad, but it would make sense that Flanno at least makes the squad,” Klopp explained.
“We will see, it depends on a few other things. We have a few little [injury problems].
“Dejan obviously didn’t play, now we have to see how we can line up at centre-half. Then is Joe at centre-half or full-back?
“We will see how we can do this, but [Flanagan] is in the mix for tomorrow for sure.”

Dominic Solanke is another who is expected to make his full debut, with Klopp hailing the youngster’s ability to take “each minute as an opportunity.”

Ings playing tomorrow then

Edit:actually, didn't he go off in the last u23s game as a precaution

We'll lose this - and then focus on the race for fourth.

If it were not for the poor results of last week then I would be perfectly happy for us to play the U23 team and hopefully lose....

Insisting on going deep for most seasons in a shit trophy when you had a shallow squad was stupid.

We do have Europe this year and we should concentrate on only 3 of the competitions .... Carabao cup.... what the fuck is Carabao???

Give some squad or youth players some game time/experience sure but.... I for one won't be too upset if its Leicester who make it to the next round.

I'd get Milner playing in CM in this one too - he isn't starting XI quality at CM in my eyes so give him his playing minutes in the Cup. I can see a case for playing Flanno in this game given he wouldn't get a start at any other point in the season if he isn't making this team so potentially him in for TAA. I'd like to see Gomez at CB with a view to being put ahead of Klavan when Klopp does rotate CB.

TAA---Gomez---Klavan---Robertson
----------Milner---Grujic----------------

Woodburn--Dom--Sturridge

He may as well be tried out as DM. He wants to play in midfield but as you say he's not been great there, and he's got experience at RB and LB, so he's probably the most likely non-DM to make a competent DM in the very short term, so this seems a chance to test that assumption.

We've got fucking zero chance of winning this cup with the squad we have. There is no point playing any first teamers.
Go out of it. What's the fucking point.

.

How do you work that out? We reached the final and semi final in the last two seasons with a weaker squad. And it's not as if we're in the position to pick and choose silverware.

The flip side of this is that we're not in a position to win everything so we'd be better off prioritizing...

Not if we're supposed to be not good enough even to win THAT cup. Goal posts being moved so often they'll end up by the dug outs at this rate.

Fuck this talk of zero chance of winning it.

At this stage it's the most winnable trophy so fucking go out to win it.

We haven't won anything in years.

I'd love to see Ings get minutes and I assume no Ejaria means he's done

I want to see some of our squad players get minutes here like Ward, Gomez and Grujic. This can't be our priority competition bit that's not to say I don't want us to progress. Let's win and hopefully see something in our reserves that is worth persisting with.

This is a club that's one one single trophy in eleven years. In that context, treating the trophy you're most likely to be strong enough to win - judging by the consensus on here - as your lowest priority, in favour of what exactly? Attempting to win the Champions League?? Is laughable. The fans are fast becoming the standard bearers of the Beggars Can Be Choosers movement. The squad's quite large enough to cope with one cup game only a month into the season. There's no need for grand decisions about priorities. And people can't have it both ways: if the team's too crap to do much this season, then it's illogical to dismiss what on paper represents the best chance of winning something. I hate to think what they'll be saying if ever the squad really meets their own expectations - they'll probably be against playing even the Academy team in all of these horribly common and trivial and terribly, terribly, draining cup games.

Wait, so if Klopp doesn't play a full-strength team - which he won't - he's wrong?

Because if he was going to prioritise winning the League Cup, he'd play his strongest side. Which he won't.

With Klopp saying that Ward, Ox and Grujic will all start i think its definitely safe to say that Carabao cup is definitely the lowest of his priorities. He wants his main players fresh for league and CL games....rightfully so i might add. If we go any injuries to our main players in the Carabao cup the first thing people will say is why was he playing in such a pointless game. Can't see Klopp taking it serously unless we make it to the Quarter finals minimum. This is the perfect games for players like Solanke and Woodburn to get first team experience. Oh and Ox....keep forgetting about him as he was such a pointless signing.

You won't get to the quarter finals without taking it seriously. And there's nothing to do with not taking it seriously by rotating and playing players like Solanke and Woodburn.

Exactly, Klopp has made it clear that the competition isn't a priority, so how come Macca is moaning about entitled fans thinking exactly the same thing?

I think the phrase 'strongest side' only really applies to our front three at the moment. Whatever midfield or defence line up we put out seems a bit gash on paper at least. Mind you that's partly because I have a low opinion of most of our players.

Craig Shakespeare has fitness issues to contend with as four Leicester first-team players look likely to miss out on the sides’ first meeting of two this week.

Jamie Vardy has not been ruled out but will have a groin problem assessed before a decision is made on his involvement, the Foxes boss explained to the media ahead of the tie.

“He has had continuous treatment and we will give him every opportunity to be fit but he won’t be one to risk,” said Shakespeare. “We will assess him [on Tuesday morning], but I am very confident he will be fit for Saturday.”

Christian Fuchs (eye) and Matty James (Achilles) are unavailable, while defender Robert Huth is expected to miss out after ankle surgery in the summer.

Yes but by starting players such as Solanke and Woodburn he's not taking it AS seriously as other competitions. If it was away to Seville you wouldn't find Solanke and Woodburn starting unless we had some serious injuries.

It depends when and what the game is, but I don't see why you want to edge towards a simple yes or no in terms of taking it seriously. Fielding as strong a side as possible in the circumstances, also taking note of your opponent's likely selections, and approaching the game very seriously, is surely what many fans expect. I've always been clear about hating changing keepers, but apart from that, I'm pleased to see a sensible mix of first team and squad players for games like this. And as this manager took the side to the latter stages in the past two seasons, it's a bit perverse to be so keen to claim he doesn't take it seriously. But each to their own.

Why wouldn't we prioritise this game? There's 4 trophies to go for, this is akin to the FA Cup, we ain't going to win the League, we ain't going to win the Chumps League, barring a miracle. So, what do people want?
I'd like to think that a Wembley final might be some reward to some of our fan base. Call me mad but we used to be interested in this stuff.
