Leicester (A) - League Cup

Why wouldn't we prioritise this game? There's 4 trophies to go for, this is akin to the FA Cup, we ain't going to win the League, we ain't going to win the Chumps League, barring a miracle. So, what do people want?
I'd like to think that a Wembley final might be some reward to some of our fan base. Call me mad but we used to be interested in this stuff.

It's a great opportunity to use the squad and try some players who haven't had much time in the league. I want to win this and don't want us throwing out a disjointed cannon fodder side but we should be keeping the league as our first priority.

And therefore continue to win no silverware? I disagree mate.

How are players like Grujic and Ward and Ings and Woodburn supposed to develop without game time? We have some players we've invested time, money and effort in. They aren't the Voronins and Koncheskys we've had previously. Insert them into the lineup with other established players.

When we used to play our first team castoffs with the U23 side in the Cups, that was setting everyone up for failure but that's not what many (any?) are advocating for here.

We have secondary players who need to make a claim for a first team spot. Today is the chance for some of them.

How do you work that out? We reached the final and semi final in the last two seasons with a weaker squad. And it's not as if we're in the position to pick and choose silverware.
Sorry wasn't clear. We weren't playing in the champions league. We have no chance of this squad stretching 4 competitions. We should fuck this off. Or break the squad.

Even with our best team, we would struggle against this lot because of defensive problems., so may as well give the squad player a chance in this game.

I get that. It's a trophy, even if it's one of the lesser ones.

But what do you want Klopp to do? Play a full-strength team? Go all out to win it?

And if that is the case, how are we ever going to give youth and squad players opportunity?

We're in 4 competitions. Yeah, we aren't going to win the league, but we can't prioritise the fucking League Cup over it, especially not at this stage.

Having a deep squad allows you to rotate players. It's impossible to keep playing the same 12 or 14 players in every single game

It wouldn't matter if we win this and come in 5th. The squad players will play and if we lose so be it.

We are not in Oct yet and Klopp is already rotating. There is no way he will put a full first team here anyway. It will be a mix and match, like most other league games when we are not facing a top 6 side.

Much as I can't stand Mourinho, he's always very sharp when it comes to grabbing the chance for silverware early on. Look at how often he's competed strongly for it. It takes some pressure off, and it either helps build momentum or doesn't do any harm. It's not about playing your absolutely best first XI, it's about taking the competition seriously, realising the opportunity and managing your squad intelligently. You might consider dismissing the competition when you're sitting pretty at the top of the league, but not when you're where we are.

It depends when and what the game is, but I don't see why you want to edge towards a simple yes or no in terms of taking it seriously. Fielding as strong a side as possible in the circumstances, also taking note of your opponent's likely selections, and approaching the game very seriously, is surely what many fans expect. I've always been clear about hating changing keepers, but apart from that, I'm pleased to see a sensible mix of first team and squad players for games like this. And as this manager took the side to the latter stages in the past two seasons, it's a bit perverse to be so keen to claim he doesn't take it seriously. But each to their own.

Yeah, I think he takes it seriously. There is obvious squad prioritising and making sure your best players are more fresh for the perceived bigger game of the coming week, but the idea of buying a bigger squad and having quality in depth, is that you give yourself more chance of A) being able to spread the squad across more competitions effectively and B) being able to do that with purpose and actual quality when you field a so-called weaker XI.

We have our obvious issues and lack of depth at the back, but by and large the midfield and attack has a good quantity of options that makes it conceivable to change things around and still have enough quality to cause the opposition a headache. At least on paper anyway, though we know it doesn't always work out that way. We couldn't really say that last season and anything but the first choice attack and midfield would leave us looking short on quality and lacking cohesion and an edge.

Let's see how we do anyway, I'm sure either way there will be the usual barrage of "I told you so's" on here, but it'd be nice if we could go there, throw in a couple of the fringe lads who are knocking on the first team door, and win with maybe one or two pleasing performances from the likes of Woodburn or whoever.

Klopp will want to win it and sometimes the best way to get the taste for winning it is by knocking out one of the bigger sides early.

Hmm, I wonder how they will line up – the version of a usual 4-3-3 with Coutinho and Ox on the flanks or something a bit different?

---------===-------Ward---------------------
Flanagan-Gomez--Klavan-Robertson
-------------------Henderson---------------
----------Grujic------------Wijnaldum-----
---Ox-----------Solanke---------Coutinho

Hate to be pessimistic before a game, but I dread seeing the Gomez-Klavan combo. One is IMO 1-2 years from being ready to seriously challenge for a spot in central defense, the other is just not very good. The Flanno-Robbo flanks of the defense don't inspire much confidence either. Let's hope they prove me wrong, of course.

That spine is indeed fucking horrendous. Thank God Vardy isn't playing. He'd have got a hat-trick.

I'm happy to see Gomez get a game in the middle as it will give us a chance to assess him but would have preferred it be Lovren alongside him, as I'm not sure partnering Klavan does anyone any favours.

Getting Grujic alongside the other two established first teamers is good, as are starts for all of the selected front 3.
