Professional Footballers' Association chairman Clarke Carlisle believes his organisation made "a huge mistake" in hiring comedian Reginald D Hunter to perform at Sunday's awards in London.
The black American performer Hunter used the word 'nigger' during his performance at the PFA dinner at Grosvenor House hotel in Mayfair.
"I thought we made a huge mistake," Carlisle said."Using a comedian of his type was a gross error in judgement."
Tottenham's Gareth Bale was named the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year, while Arsenal Ladies midfielder Kim Little was named the inaugural PFA Women's Player of the Year at the annual awards evening.
Northampton defender Carlisle, who became PFA chairman in 2010, added: "I was embarrassed, sat up there throughout, and I want to apologise unreservedly to the footballing community that was present."
Carlisle revealed that some of the attendees had found Hunter's humour "highly offensive".
"This is the showpiece finale. I don't want to lambast Reginald Hunter - he's a comedian. He will take issues to the edge and beyond," he told BBC Radio 5 live.
"I thought [the content] was inappropriate because we are a union that have fought strongly against racism over years.
"Don't get it twisted. Comedy is subjective - some found him funny, some weren't offended, some weren't comfortable and some found it highly offensive.
"He also talked about Jews, Judaism and women - the tone of which I thought was wholly inappropriate."
“It's a difficult subject in football and with him not being fully aware of how emotive it has been in football”
PFA chief Gordon Taylor on Hunter
Carlisle added: "My personal experience of him was on satirical shows. There was an expectation or hope he would cater for his audience. We need to address what kind of prepping we gave him beforehand."
A PFA statement published on Monday said that Hunter had been informed that about 25% of the audience at the awards would be women and that the ages would range from 18 to 80. It added that the American was also told "swearing or any racist references were to be avoided".
Speaking before Carlisle's comments, PFA chief executive Gordon Taylor said Hunter might have been unaware that racial language had been an "emotive" subject in football in recent times.
"I think there were a few raised eyebrows over the comedian but that is the sort of thing you can't control. It was unfortunate. He is a professional comedian," Taylor said.
"It's a difficult subject in football and with him not being fully aware of how emotive it has been in football, that was probably a difficulty for him."
In February, Football Association ambassador Paul Elliott resigned from all roles representing the organisation and his role at anti-discrimination body Kick It Out following reports of a racism row.
A newspaper report alleged Elliott had a dispute by text message over a business venture with former Charlton player Richard Rufus. Elliott was reported to have used a derogatory term.

So the PFA hired a comedian for the night that used the word nigger? lol you couldn't make this stuff up.
On a side note, I like Hunter, he's a funny fucker, they've obviously had a sense of humour failure. It coulda been worse, they coulda hired frankie 'cunt' boyle......

That buffoon Carlisle was also claiming his 'members' were appalled by the supposed sexism as well. This the bunch of knuckledraggers who routinely treat women like weird alien creatures, who if they're not 'roasting' them they're leering at them or treating them like dirt. Yes, Clark, I'm sure you and your mates were sitting there dabbing your noses with lavender and feeling terribly faint. If Carlisle had wanted to punish Hunter he could have offered to have driven him home.

Henry Winter's simpering bit of PR in the Torygraph:

Doubtless there will be some analysis over why Carlisle took the lead. My sense is that he acted as quickly as he could because the union he loves, and works so hard for, was suffering in the eye of a storm.
So Carlisle went on radio stations, talked to all and sundry, delivering a mea culpa. The PFA erred badly in booking Hunter and, as Carlisle acknowledged, “we have to take responsibility as an organisation for that”.
This is what leaders do. They take responsibility. Carlisle did.

Henry, mate, that's called naked ambition, that what it was.

It just shows their idiocy, when they don't even think of researching a comedian's routine before booking them.

I bet Gordon Taylor sat through loads of gigs by the likes of Stan Boardman, Bernard Manning and Co, they were regulars on the football club circuit back in his day as, er, a younger ex-player. His recent Dr WHO -like metamorphosis as an anti-racist, anti-sexist, all-round good egg really does seem laughable.

hahaahhahaa poor the Hunter. He sounds like a perfectly funny dude who did nothing wrong.

But because he said a word that they made into a strict liability offense that is punishable by burning at the stake, now all these decrepit dinosaurs and the pathetic excuse for a culture and country which they claim to represent, they have had to fake being offended by a harmless joke in order to continue their galactically stupid fight against racism.

Henry, mate, that's called naked ambition, that what it was.

Also, retarded leaders dictate to their even more retarded followers when and where they should be offended.

Those ex-players who can't manage end up coaching. Those who can't coach end up as pundits. Those who can't do punditry end up working at the PFA. Clarke Carlisle gives the impression that he only got into football so he could get involved in committee meetings. Yes, yes, Clark, you did well on Countdown, jolly good, but that isn't actually proof that you're anything more than a spectacularly dull, pompous, humourless 21st century version of Fred Kite. Please go away!

A comedian criticised over his performance at the Professional Footballers' Association awards ceremony has responded by posting photos from the event alongside humourous captions mocking the outrage.
The PFA has reportedly demanded Reginald D Hunter repay his fee after he repeatedly used the word 'n*****' during his routine at London's Grosvenor Hotel.
The black American stand-up is well known for his racial content, but the PFA insists it had an agreement with him that "swearing or any racist references were to be avoided".
PFA chairman Clarke Carlisle also said he was "embarrassed" the organisation had booked Hunter, who explained at the start of his set that he uses the word 'n*****' to refer to people of all races.
But after initially opting not to comment on the furore, the comedian posted 37 photos in an album entitled 'The PFA Awards - the horrible aftermath' on his Facebook page.
One showed him surrounded by four other smiling attendees at the event, with the caption: "Reginald D Hunter being chased by an angry anti-racist mob to his taxi."
In another, he is pictured with a female member of the audience at the ceremony, alongside a caption saying: "Reginald D Hunter saluting misogyny with no regard to this woman's feelings."
Black footballer Jason Roberts can be seen beaming next to Hunter in one picture. The caption reads: "Reginald D Hunter and this disgusted PFA attendee prepare to entertain the PFA after party with a reenactment of the fight scene from Django Unchained."
PFA deputy chief executive Bobby Barnes previously said the association was looking to recoup the money it had paid to Hunter for his set.
"We are obviously very upset, because he was briefed," he said.
"We are very aware that we have a very diverse audience there. I can't think of a redeeming feature where you could say that was positive because I actually think the whole performance from start to finish was dreadful."
Racial abuse cases involving Liverpool's Suarez and former England captain John Terry have been a major source of controversy in English football over the last two years.
