Christ, can you imagine Houllier coming back?

Liverpool keeping close eye on McLeish contract talks
Published 23:00 12/03/10 By James Nursey Recommend (10)

Liverpool are monitoring Alex McLeish’s contract talks at Birmingham closely as Rafa Benitez continues to struggle.

Reds manager Benitez, 49, penned a lucrative new deal a year ago, committing him to the club until 2014.

But Liverpool face a battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League and lost the first leg of their last 16 Europa League tie at Lille 1-0 on Thursday.

Benitez still has the support of the club’s under-fire American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

But Brum boss Big ’Eck is in their contingency plans should Benitez quit or the season end in complete disaster.

The former Scotland and Rangers chief has guided Brum to eighth on a modest budget which has impressed the Anfield hierarchy.

He is in negotiations with new owner Carson Yeung and has a buy-out clause of just £1million in his contract, which expires in 18 months.

Who knows what could happen if McCleish was appointed? I wouldn't see it as a disaster.

I was a season ticket holder at ibrox for one of his seasons in charge, and he was tactically astute, and not afraid to make changes if the performance demanded- rather unlike the tactical paralysis Rafa suffers from in the first 65 minutes of every game.

He's won in Europe as a player, and learned the ropes as a manger with Rangers. He's worked at a 'big' club and under serious media scrutiny (which comes with the job up there). He's probably one of the best options if we go for someone currently in the league. Or we could go for Martinez because he's foreign...

If we can't attract a amanger from Europe's top tier, and we choose someone currently working in England, then the fact of the matter is that McCleish is one of the best options. I like him.

I don't think our next manager will come from that list of names.

Doc - Rangers ? tut tut

I was living in Glasgow that year, and I went with the future father-in-law. It was the only way he'd let me marry his daughter.

(I had a pocket radio and ear-piece and listened to us when we were playing btw).

i have to admit that i'd find it all very interesting if we appointed mcleish. i would like more english/british presence at the club in general. it would feel like we're practically offering to remove ourseves from the top 4, though.

Have you looked at the table lately Skully ? We're doing that anyway

i mean that he would have a kind of deglamorizing effect.

I suspect it's just down to lots of optimistic Liverpool fans betting on him. I'm pretty sure he'll go to City or Madrid.

Looking at that list of names almost makes me not want Rafa to leave. Of those, the only ones I'd want are Mourinho, O'Neill, maybe Rijkaard and maybe Lippi. Though Van Basten would undoubtedly look cool in a suit...

For some reason I am reminded of Ruud Gullit as manager of Newcastle.
That went well, didn't it?

I think rijkaard has a different philosophy and would take a totally different approach rafa has a similar approach to gh, the last 10 years almost blur together. if rafa goes I want fresh, new and exciting ideas.

what success did guillit have before n'castle? the quality of squad is far higher at liverpool than n'castle so rijkaard would have more to work with than ruud did.

When Rafa goes I don't want another fucking five year plan.

just a feeling. he's very aloof and i really think we need a stronger personality. again, it would be interesting; in a weird way.

show me one soundbite, one line, one sniff where rafa states (or anyone else when rafa joined) there is a five year plan.

the man has pedigree as a player and a manager so you'd hope that would give him instant respect from top to bottom.
