Rumoured to be 5-6 mill £

£15m mentioned is some rag today. I'm sure it's closer to £6m though.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

“There’s definitely no deal between the clubs – 100 per cent,†Pardew said. “He’s under contract here until next summer, and we hope to open talks on a new deal as soon as possible.

“That’s where we are. We want to keep our best players, and Jose’s one of them.

“As far as anything being a done deal, that’s not true. We want Jose to stay. Nothing€™s changed.â€

One other thing before I go to bed. Told no #LFC deal with #NUFC for Jose Enrique yet. Other clubs interested. Night

From everything I hear, #LFC have, for the first time in a long time, a very clear transfer strategy for the summer

The likes of Gary Cahill, Jose Enrique, Ashley Young, Mamadou Sakho and Connor Wickham have all been identified as targets by #LFC

RM: Young
ST: Wickham

I'd be somewhat content with those signings.

Not sure if this has been posted. First read this in TLW.

http://www.lfcismyreligion.com/comolli-on-lfc-transfer-strategy/

Liverpool’s director of football has spoken on the clubs transfer policy and the importance not to buy players that will block the progress of the most talented youngsters.

On Monday night we saw the debut of young fullback Jon Flanagan and Comolli was keen to stress that we mustn’t hinder young players progress and have the right blend of youth and experience.

Comolli said “If there is a very good 18 or 19 year old full back we need to make sure that in two or three years they are in the first team and not sign another player in front of him from outside. That’s the strong message I give to the staff at the Academy and also to the scouts, I say don’t push players in a position where we already have a talented player. If we did then we may as well shut down the Academy.â€

“We want the Academy to produce players because the more Academy players you have in the first team the stronger the sense of identity is and the stronger their love for the shirt and the club will be,†Comolli explained. “It would also mean that we are producing players who play the kind of football that we want. These are key things for us.

“But in terms of recruitment for the first team, there are positions where you have to get experience. There are other positions where you can use a young player and we would rather invest a lot of money in a young player than on a 29-year-old. That’s our philosophy but we’re not the only ones – Spurs do the same, Arsenal do the same. It is how we see it for the future but it’s all about balance because we don’t want 21 to be the average age of our first team. We need Stevie (Gerrard), we need Carra and we need Dirk Kuyt but we are also very happy to get Andy Carroll who is22 and Luis Suarez who is 24.â€

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

That list doesnt really smell of winning the league though. We need at least one proper fucking great winger.

Getting Enrique, Cahill and Young would be ace. But we need more.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I think anyone expecting us to buy a league-winning side in one summer is deluding themselves. Our primary objective at this point should be getting back into the top four.

It's a logical approach.
Flanagan is IMO still too young to be considered a back up to our starting right back Johnson.
I don't think we're ready to sell Johnson in order to replace him with Kelly and have Flanagan as his understudy.
Robinson, Flanagan, Coady, Wisdom, Sterling, Suso, Morgan and Ngoo are all between between 17-18 years old. They still need about 2 years before they can be considered in the first team squad IMO.

morgan and sterling are actually 16, just to be pedantic.
[/quote]

I know but they'll be 17 later this year and Ngoo will be 19.

I'm just saying that it's too early to have the youth players progress in mind when buying players to strengthen the squad.
There's two ways to look at it IMO.
Going after top class player that are 20-22 years old seems to be more damaging considering that they'll probably be here for the long haul.
I wouldn't mind buying a 27 year old player, give him a 4 year contract and sell him when he hits 30 in order to promote a 20 year old Sterling.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

I can't believe there are no CMs on that list. Surely we're not worrying about 'blocking the progress' of Lucas and Spearing, are we?

Why not just buy a 22-year-old (lower wages and higher sell-on fee than a 27-year-old) and sell HIM after three years?

i've seen a few fairly reputable people on twitter suggest we're still very much in for yann m'vila, and i wouldn't rule charlie adam out either, so i reckon there's a fair chance we'll address that area as well.

Like the left fullback position. We had a young decent player in Warnock, but Benitez insisted on playing Insua, Dossena and to lesser extent Aurelio.
It would be a shame if that happened to Sterling etc.

Warnock left in January 2007 aged 26 because Aurelio was way, way better. Insua didn't get a run of games until nearly two years later. Also Dossena is just three months younger than Warnock.

So I'm lost as to your point?

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

Benitez insisted on playing riise ahead of warnock. Justifiably. Warnock is shit.

What I meant was that we could have kept Warnock. Instead on spending on Dossena.
Aurelio is twice as good as Warnock but he is injured 60% of the time so Warnock would have got his fair share of games.

Forget about Warnock, he was a bad example, the point is that buying younger European talents might impede the home grown players chances in the first team.

Might! I'm not saying it will.

What I tried to explain was that it might be easier for a youth player to replace an ageing player in the senior squad than a player in his prime.
Example: buying Hazard who's 20 years old now. When he's 24, Sterling is 20 years old and trying to break in to first team and he's competing with Hazard. He'll always be trailing him.
However if we bought someone who was 27 he'd be 31 in four years time and probably easier to replace.

TWO FUCKING WAYS TO LOOK AT IT.

Re: Jose Enrique - 'Done Deal' says Thommo

It also places a lot of pressure on the youth players to perform. We should buy the best player, if they youth are good enough they will make it, if not then we've still got a pretty fucking good player
