Hi,

NOTW called. They want their sensationalism back.

Ultimately, he's right though. Johnson is a fucking shit defender.

He's no worse at defending as Arbeloa but immensely better at going forward.

No way. Arbeloa was a much better defender. He was a converted center half and it showed. Everyone other top 4 team seems to be able to accommodate attacking full backs. Why not us, eh?

The whole side is misfiring at the moment amd Johnson's no exception, but his defending is nowhere near as bad as some of us are suggesting and had shown signs of real improvement earlier in the season. For some reason the media have chosen his defending as one of their latest bandwagons, and now some of us are actually starting to believe it. FFS.

it's not a bandwagon when he scores an own goal, gets turned by Arshavin and heads to the ball to Belhadj to fire home. He is visibly failing to deal with the ball when it comes to him and making fatal errors, please tell me which part is not true? I am not saying he is the ONLY problem the team has but in the last few games these errors ARE his

Try reading the whole of the post, which admits right from the start that Johnson's not playing well at the moment. My quarrel is with the way you and others expand that into some kind of overall judgment that "Johnson's defending is sh!t". It isn't, and if you don't believe me perhaps you'll believe Fabio Capello.

at the moment glen is the best right back in the premiership the only one i rate as highly as him is sagna of arsenal who is second best .

There's an injury tracker on the offal now. http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/team/first-team/injuries it's pretty crap though.

Magic is an excellent player, and while he isn't the best defensively, it has only been the last two games he has cost us

He's been one of our best players this season, and people clamouring to label him 'shit' or pine for Arbeloa are simply retarded

I think Johnson's a decent defender, I really do. He's shown that with some wonderful last ditch defending and tackles since he's been here.

I just think he's struggling in an under-performing side. As said already, there's problems which run far deeper than a few individual mistakes.

Hahaaa

I love GloJo, but he's looked a pinch away from tears throughout the last two games. He made played a part on both of the goals against Arsenal and made a horrible clearance that led to Pompey goal on Saturday. I agree with whoever suggested him in midfield, I think we could do with him offensively, a few good performances might restore some of his confidence. Plus I could do with not seeing Kuyt run around chasing his own tale for a few games too.

I can't believe this is a serious suggestion.

I agree with Kenny that his confidence is down though I don't think it's been for anything like a long period.

I think Johnson was actually getting almost over confident and first half of the Arsenal game he was having a great time. Causing plenty of issues, making ground, getting crosses in - he was so confident he started trying to take shots from outside the area. Then came that strange og and a freakish effort from the little Russian. His confidence has been dropping for three halves of football and that's about it IMO.

Defending is not his strongest suit but he's been far from a liability - just suffering an unexpected stumble at the moment.

Hardly fair, Johnson has been one of the few bright spots in this otherwise dark and utterly depressing season. He hasnt recaptured his early form since his injury and yes his positioning for the own goal he gave away last week was poor but if you think hes been our worst defender this season then you are watching different games to me. The 2nd goal on Saturday involved Agger doing a lazy impression of Skertl and Carra being brushed aside in a manner that made me think he had mistaken his opponent for Drogba and decided to allow him the freedom of the penalty area at will, while our world class goal keeper was twice beaten from an accute angle.

I hate to say it but there has been a collective erosion of confidence in the squad, the defenders are playing like novices. Johnson kept his head above water longer than most but unfortauntely he too seems to have succumbed to the poison thats infected our dressing room. Mascherano has been getting wilder by the game and Torres and Gerrard have devolved in sulking and bickering with officials while clueless players like Kuyt and Lucas just dont want the ball.

If Rafa gets the sack it wont be because of Johnson it will be because he has constructed a team devoid of any shape in attack or defence, no clear gameplan, no will to win, he has created a caution first midfield that treats a football as if its made of kryptonite, he employs wide players without the skill or technique to beat an opposing player let alone pass the ball. He employs wide players with no pace whose primary obejective is to defend agaisnt the opposing fullback, away to the worst team in the league.

Good post RedStar.
I agree that Rafa has more of an eye for a solid grafter than a skillful, game winner.
I also wouldn't put any blame at Reina's door for either goal tbh, the first was a rocket and the second was down to Carra allowing Piquene (sp) to turn.

agree there mate Reina has been our most consistent player this year, just highlighting that there have been mistakes in all departments not just Johnson who has been, relatively speaking, pretty good

Hardly fair?> the guy is paid a fortune and can't clear a ball and is costing us. im just pointing out the facts. he ought to be dropped for a few games, i wouldnt want to go to Villa park with a nervous johnson playing like this.

I don't think dropping Johnson would help. I'd go with the suggestion that he were moved further forward and allow a better defender to slot in for him.

You'd rather go there with

a) Carragher? - Hates playing there. Never even runs after a fucking ball if it is not put on his toe.
b) Degen? - Has played 3 premier league games for us.
c) Kelly? - Has been injured and has not resumed full training yet. Has never even started a league match.
d) Skrtel? - His one and only appearance there made me want to vomit.

What do you suggest we do Rebel?

As I said, Rafa should stop buying attacking full backs and defensive attackers... maybe then he will have players in the team that suit his system. He is a defensive manager who has slow players out wide - players he needs to counter attack. He has attacking full backs but spends the whole game telling players to get back into position.

It isn't Johnson, its Rafa that's clueless about how he uses players he buys.

I agree with you that overall, we do not have enough pace in our side.
Of course he tells the players to get back into position, what else do you expect him to do?
Go up to your local park when the sunday league games are on and all you'll hear is the managers and coaches roaring and shotuing for players to get back into position.

Could get Benitez the sack. He has been atrocious and a liability in the last 2 games, needs dropping for now

hugely annoyed that one of our most highly paid players can't do their job and is undermining things

[/quote]

And not:

the form of several other senior players?
the baffling subs and tactics in some games?

Yes, lets blame Glen.

*gets lighted torch*
