John Henry's open letter to fans

Don't expect anything different.

Expect the clubs pr team out in force this week, in damage limitation.

I don't have a beef with the owners, I'm glad he come out and said that, I do agree with what he's said there, although Dempsey was maybe worth stretching to £6million for.

I think this statement was needed. Fair play to John Henry. It's a sensible way of moving the club forward. I think we were one player away from a good window. Our problem was we didn't get the likes of Carroll off early enough to raise funds for others. In future, we need to get our business done before the final week, so that clubs don't try and hold us to ransom and we pay over inflated fees.

If only the Fenway Group had implemented this strategy before paying 35m for Carroll. We'd ended that season with as many trophies, but would have saved ourselves at least 15-20m (if were indeed still after Carroll).

Maybe the club would have stretched to £6 million if al Fayed had not stated that his price was £5 million but £6 million if the buyer was Liverpool. Dempsey's good, but not so good as to be worth sacrificing your principles for. 🙂

There stance on over spending is fucking weird.

A year ago we are over paying on all fronts.

This year I would say we got value for money, but suddenly stretching an extra million is too much. Fulham started out wanting what, £10m+ for Dempsey, we managed to keep cool, tap the guy up and wait. Then when it came of pulling the trigger we won't 'over-spend'.

Sounds like bollocks to me.

it is a good letter - and clearly reasons fot their policy is outlined. now do us a favour and sell SG.

Its all perfectly sensible, but I'm sure there's a big conspiracy behind it all.

How you view this letter is dependent on how you perceive the owners.
Personally I believe they are trying to do the right thing, are learning as they go, have made huge mistakes but are admitting to them and the best we can hope for is to build over the next two years until we have a team that can compete. We should have brought in a striker and we will pay for that mistake, but other than that the transfer window worked out pretty well for us.
We are all much more panicky these days due to the immediacy of information, and the fact our major rivals continue to get it right.
In the past rebuilding was acceptable, even if it took a few years. Shanks rebuilt between title wins in '66 and '73. Different times, different type of business then, but if that happened now he'd have been out on his ear. Only my opinion but we should never have let Benitez go. All water under the bridge now of course, but we must never forget that before FSG took on H&G and fought to take the club over we were truly fucked, and they have stabilized us. Yes we have seen huge errors, some shambolic decisions etc but we were within a cunt hair of being the next Leeds.
I for one will try and remain patient and panic-free and see what happens, because unless some dodgy Russian or bored sheikh happens to fly over Liverpool and think 'I fancy a bit of that' we are in this situation. Let's deal with it.

If that open letter was an offer document for an investment would it inspire you?

I can't say I'm excited or reassured, the 'errors' he speaks of were being committed right up until the weekend. It doesn't augur well.

Or am I being too critical?

It's mainly shallow claptrap, but I think they should be applauded for at least responding promptly. They might not be trustworthy custodians, but they do realise they have to be seen to be trying to be trustworthy custodians.

"we have complete faith in Roy and the players he's bringing in."

"we have complete faith in Kenny and the players he's bringing in."

"we have complete faith in Brendan...

Open Letters doesn't win you football games.

Nice read though and we can all agree that he certainly does talk the talk.

The owners have to say that don't they?

It would have been a bit of a surprise if the latest press release said "We did have complete faith in Brendan but now we are beginning to have doubts about him." 😀

I can't see any clear direction here: BR says he wants a 29 year old, Henry says we're only buying young lads.

Shouldn't he have told Brendan?

is there any other club that write so many "open letters to the fans " ? fuck me . I cringe every time i see it .

Until they learn the necessity of pragmatism in football they won't progress. Managers have to be able to bring in anyone of any age if they can make a good case for the practical value and urgency of doing so. You can't just decide ab initio some rigid policy connected to age, or some other aspect, and expect it not to wreck certain moments in your team's future. Having a general policy is fine, and FSG's seems eminently sensible, but it cannot remain as dogmatic as it currently is. They seem to fear the exception to the rule will make the rule redundant. It won't. That's why it's the exception. They need to loosen up, look at particular cases in context and on their own merit, and trust the man in whom they claim they have faith,

Given it was previously publicly mentioned and everyone of us knew it, you'd think Brendan would have known

They will loosen up, but the time to add expensive experienced players to a team is when you're on the cusp of competing in the league and are going all out to win it.

Our situation is a million miles from that

I agree with the policy, not over paying, looking for young players. But they got backed into a corner by letting AC go.

That's one of the main issues with FSG and my lack of confidence in what they say and do, namely they flip-flop all over the place. They initially left everything to DC and Kenny, put faith in them in terms of players, fees and contracts. Things went tits up and we are suffering. As a result they have gone the other way and put down a set of conditions which are so rigid that we look like chumps.

With regards to the Dempsy fiasco, the only thing that would make me want to give them the benefit would be if the rumours of Fulham asking us to pay more than other clubs was true.
