I like that he refers to the club as 'us' and 'we', makes it feel like he's not treating it like a piece of property

Although we must credit this guy with not being stupid like his predecessors.

Red Sox's Henry fined $500K for remarks

Updated Mar 1, 2011 11:18 PM ET
NEW YORK (AP)
Boston Red Sox owner John Henry has been fined $500,000 by Major League Baseball for publicly criticizing the sport's revenue sharing rules.

Henry told Boston radio station WEEI on Tuesday that the commissioner's office punished him for comments he made to The Boston Globe in November 2009.

A person familiar with the fine confirmed that Henry was docked $500,000 not long after the comments were made. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss the penalty publicly.

After the 2009 season, Henry said seven ''chronically uncompetitive teams'' received more than $1 billion in revenue sharing and wondered who could think that was a good idea besides those clubs.

George, I get the impression from the fine meeted out to Henry that he is not popular amongst the Baseball administrators.

To be fair Henry makes a valid point albeit a costly one.

It's an understandable point but I'm less sure about its validity. IMO there is a purpose to revenue-sharing, namely to try and keep the league from becoming a procession behind an elite few.

The fine is OTT though.

The fine seems a little extreme given his comments.

They should introduce fines of that scale for managers here....Rummy wouldnt be long about keeping his filthy whiskey stinking trap shut then!

Wouldn't work, fellas. The old git would simply refuse to pay and the authorities would do 100% of f'ck all about it.

Sadly, you're probably right Jules >🙁

Particularly since he was proven correct. His problem was that there were no guidelines on how revenue sharing money should be spent - because the suspicion was that some owners were simply pocketing it. Which naturally defeats the purpose of the system.

It turned out the Pirates and Marlins were doing it.

Exactly. The money is intended to provide parity and ensure that no team sits in the league's basement for too long. Several franchises continually tank and it should, in my opinion, be questioned. (And some are terrible despite spending an alright amount, like Toronto. Always fighting for 3rd in the division....)

US sports don't mess around with their fines. They really are meant to hurt.

What's the story with resurrecting old threads? This really should be a new thread...
