He may be having a shit time; but I think that there was a very good player in there, I don't think it was ALL hype, ref.

It not that he couldn't play, it's just his positional awareness is/was abysmal. He only really works as a player when he is an afterthought, i.e. the opposition players are too busy worrying about Fat Frank, Drogba, Robben, Duff et al. to bother paying specific attention to Cole. Then he can drift in and score or cause trouble. When he has been the focal point of the team, like last night, he is normally shit.

Firstly, how was he the 'focal point' of the team last night? I'm not really sure what you're getting at there. He's a player coming back from injury, and struggling for confidence. If the team had a focal point, it was probably Dirk Kuyt, and then Andy Carroll, who we humped the ball up to time after time.
As for the rest, I think you're being way over the top. He was Chelsea's player of the year in the 2007/8 season, scoring 10 goals in the process. He was also arguably England's best player in Germany in 2006. Of course a team is the sum of its parts, but he has definitely shown he has the pedigree.
Whether his best days are behind him is certainly up for debate, but to suggest he's never done it is just revisionism.
