As shite as he's been, I'm prepared to give him *some* benefit of the doubt.

He's barely played, he's been injured, he's been in and out of the team, he's been coming off the bench, he's been stuck in a variety of positions, and he's usually playing with our second string team as well.

Contrast that to Maxi who's been playing with us for quite a while now, and we still get fuck all out of him. Maxi plays every week. Apparently.

This. And tbf, Maxi plays in whatever is close to our best side most of the time, Cole plays in a midfield that usually consists of Poulsen whilst trying to supply ammunition for David N'Gog, most of the time.

Maxi is painfully shit, regardless of how 'good his movement is', as people seem to keep defending him with. He rarely sets up a chance, beats a man or scores a goal and he's even more gash away from home where he's usually anonymous.

I thought Cole looked bright at times, was always looking to turn the man and be positive, even if it's still not upto standard, it's better than what Maxi usually has to offer. Yeah he's been a big let down and his best is nowhere near good enough, but worse than Maxi? Please.
[/quote]

I agree with both these posts. Maxi is a different level of shit. We could certainly be no worse if we swapped him for Cole in the first team. Chances are we'll end up being better.

maxi has given better performances but has been given more oppertunities. I think though, cole at his best is better than maxi at his best.

With the players we currently have + with summer signings to come, i can only see him being a squad player. I'm all for building up our squad, but when you take in to account he's got to be one of our top earners i really think we should sell him.

When Cole first hit the scene he wanted the ball all the time.. He played more central and had a bit more freedom to roam. He looked really up for it when he first signed for us..however he was playing central just behind Torres....
Then he got sent off and pushed out wide..it's as though that took what little motivation he had left away.. He is a defeated man. Similar to Babel - Tonnes of ability but is either trying too hard or happy being invisible as he doesnt want to be seen as a fuck up.

Remember his care free spirted dribbling?

Maybe he started playing first-team football too young? A lot of that West Ham golden generation look prematurely knackered - Carrick, Ferdinand, Joe Cole. Even Lampard seems to be on his way down.

I don't remember him ever being good in the middle, even for West Ham. I do however remember the hype...

He may be having a shit time; but I think that there was a very good player in there, I don't think it was ALL hype, ref.

It not that he couldn't play, it's just his positional awareness is/was abysmal. He only really works as a player when he is an afterthought, i.e. the opposition players are too busy worrying about Fat Frank, Drogba, Robben, Duff et al. to bother paying specific attention to Cole. Then he can drift in and score or cause trouble. When he has been the focal point of the team, like last night, he is normally shit.

Firstly, how was he the 'focal point' of the team last night? I'm not really sure what you're getting at there. He's a player coming back from injury, and struggling for confidence. If the team had a focal point, it was probably Dirk Kuyt, and then Andy Carroll, who we humped the ball up to time after time.

As for the rest, I think you're being way over the top. He was Chelsea's player of the year in the 2007/8 season, scoring 10 goals in the process. He was also arguably England's best player in Germany in 2006. Of course a team is the sum of its parts, but he has definitely shown he has the pedigree.

Whether his best days are behind him is certainly up for debate, but to suggest he's never done it is just revisionism.

He was a focal point in the context of my previous post. He was the only player in our entire midfield/attack (not including Magic) that could beat a man and they couldn't let him get one on one with a defender. When he was at Chelsea they had lots of players like that and opposition couldn't afford to single him out in order to double team him when defending. In that sense he is a luxury player and not suited to play in teams that are are entirely reliant on him to create chances aka Liverpool last night.

I didn't suggest he hadn't done it (not for Chelsea anyway), I did however suggest that the quality of that Chelsea team facilitated him in a way that we can't (although hopefully when Gerrard, Suarez, Carroll are all fit and playing that will change).

gerrard
meireles
cole
patches
maxi
kuyt
jova
suarez

all players better suited to playing through the middle and higher up the pitch rather than out wide. something has to give especially when you consider carroll and suarez look like automatic starters.
