Joe Allen

Good player, good squad member, no issue for me.
I like him and never worry when he is in the team.
I dont think there is that much between him, Lucas and Henderson in midfield to be honest. All are better than Gerrard nowadays and Can looks the one outstanding player.
Allen will hopefully play a part for years to come.

Fuck mate I'd have Hendo and Lucas ahead of Allen all day. Both offer much more imo.

Fuck mate. Allen is way weaker link than any of those. Gerrard, who everyone hates at the moment, has reached double figures for the tenth time. I doubt Allen will be involved in ten goals by the time he moves on.

Allen is average at best. He's not a very good DM, attacking midfielder or playmaker. He's that water carrier player that's handy when you want someone in there to help block up the midfield and just keep it simple. You can get many players like him for half the price. Surely he has to go this summer.

contributes to the home-grown quot

We do not need to worry about the quota. We have so many homegrown players in the squad that we should consider auctioning one or two off to the likes of City who will really struggle to make the number of Milner and Richards leave.

On Allen vs Hendo and Lucas:

Henderson offers lot more goals and assists, he also covers more ground (although Allen is not that far behind, I think). He is much more of a leader and a stronger presence on the pitch.

Lucas compared to Allen has much more defensive know-how, he makes the team more solid, has significantly more tackles and interceptions per game. When playing as the deepest-lying midfielder, his passes are actually more incisive and vertical than Allen's – contrary to the stereotypes.

Allen (when injury-free and in good form) is better than Henderson at keeping possession under pressure. He can turn and evade tackles, which creates space to develop the attacking move, whereas Hendo typically has to get rid of the ball quickly when challenged. So Allen can be a midfield "glue" in a way Hendo or Lucas can't – although lately this role was fulfilled by Coutinho, with even greater success. The one advantage Allen has over Lucas is that he covers more ground – need to see stats to back that up, but visually it seems so.

Allen's strengths are best utilized in a more advanced midfield position; when we played 4-3-3 he complemented the triangle with Lucas and Henderson very well. If Rodgers keeps this 3-4-3 as his basic system for the foreseeable future, there could yet be a future for Allen as part of the midfield 2 – because you don't necessarily need a full-time DM in a 3-4-3, since you already have an extra CB when defending. So it's going to be a competition between Lucas and Allen for 1 spot with Hendo presumably occupying the other. This way Can will have to stay in the back 3, possibly reinventing the Beckenbauer/Mathaus role.

Apologies, I made major edits after posting – originally I was thinking within last year's system and the conclusion was that Allen doesn't do enough in attack to warrant an advanced midfield spot (which is his best position). But in a 3-4-3 I think a player like Allen – a "water-carrier" for the lack of a better word – can actually be just what we need for balance. We'll have to wait and see; I think Lucas's injury is a big chance for Allen.

I agree with this, but some/many of his turns are really gratuitous and slow down our attacks to an annoying degree. Coutinho also does this a lot, but he tends to turn and attack, whereas Allen seems to turn....and turn again...and turn again and the other team has 10 men behind the ball now.

That's true – and I think it's psychological. Somehow he seems to be afraid to make an incisive pass forward even when it's the best and in some way even the safest option. He needs to do some sessions with Dr. Peters and stop being afraid to make a mistake. The first couple of months in LFC was the most confident I've seen him and his passing was all-around excellent, so we know he can do it.

I can't believe how good he was today. Never once shirked a tackle, never wasted a pass and ran his fucking bollocks off. All the more impressive after he played 120 minutes Thursday night.

Fair play Joe lad.

His passing was marvelous today. When he plays like this, it's like having a second playmaker on the pitch. Pity it's happened so rarely. Nonetheless, I think he's proving that he certainly has long-term value as a squad player.

Today, he was the exact opposite of what I was complaining about. Only took the touches he needed to. Was direct when the opportunity was there. Played mostly 1 and 2-touch football all game. Immense.

If Dr. Peters did that, then massive credit is due. Almost perfect performance.

Allen is the only one who tries to play at a fast tempo. Once we get back the ball it's zip up immediately. Hendo, Gerrard and Lucas are all guilty of slowing down our play from time to time.
Our tempo was excellent yesterday, a big part down to Allen and Hendo.

I think this is the Joe Allen we all hoped we signed. Hopefully his injuries are behind him for good and he can maintain this level.

He was sensational today.

He's been in this flowing form before - he played a good part in our run down the stretch last season. Let's hope this time his fitness holds up, as he's had these promising spells disrupted by injuries in the past.

It was nice to see him turn quickly and immediately be on the front foot - there were a couple of occasions where I thought it was actually Coutinho before the camera zoomed in.

Hopefully he can steer clear of the niggling injuries for a while now.

Yeah, this was the Joe Allen I want to see. Fearless in his passing as well as pressing, going far up the pitch, driving forward with the ball, looking to pass forward rather than sideways. Keep it up, Joe!

Good tidy little player to have in the squad. Good pro, happy to be a part of what BR is trying to achieve. I also like that commentators always call him Joe Allen, never just Allen. No idea why.

It goes together with "Lucas, the Brazilian" that was always spouted previously. Do they still do that when Lucas touches the ball? I haven't watched an English stream for a long time.

Love the fact that it's working out for him. He's a player I liked at Swansea and was happy to see us sign, but there's no denying he's struggled at times, so to see him now showing what he can do and playing an increasing part in the team's good form is great. Long may it continue.

"He is a very underrated player," said the boss while in conversation with journalists to preview Wednesday evening's encounter with Burnley.

"Joe was one of the first players I wanted to bring to Liverpool. He is not a player who comes off the bench and is going to score a winner, or a goal or anything like that, but his performance yesterday was incredible.

"When he first came in, he played against Manchester City [in August 2012] and a lot of the players probably weren't aware of his quality, but on that day he was outstanding.

"Yesterday, he was dominant in the game against a group of midfield players at Manchester City who are very talented. He's got so much courage to get on the ball.

"Joe is the type of player that needs games and he needs to be playing regularly for his qualities to be seen. Yesterday he broke up the game very well, he was very aggressive in his pressing and technically he is at a real high level.

"He allows other players to receive the ball. For Coutinho or Lallana to receive the ball, they need someone with the bravery to go and get it - Joe does that. He is an outstanding player and he'll show that over his years here."

Rodgers added: "With Joe it's been difficult because he's been injured a bit this year, so injuries have curtailed his availability and then once he played, he was maybe only coming in for a game or so.

"Once you see he has a run of games, he is a top-class player. I believe what we paid for him, in terms of the market now, was great value for us because he is a player that could be undervalued, but not by coaching staff or me as a manager because he's a player I rate immensely highly."

Sounds like a big vote of confidence from the boss. Hope Allen repays him with more good performances.

This smacks of him being riled by comments on his transfer spending and whether some of his signings are good value.

Perhaps, but I didn't read it as generally as that. To me it's more of a response to comments past and present that we paid too much for Allen himself.

He was absolutely fucking outstanding tonight.

Worked his cunt off, took the game on, moved it forward, pressed, retained possession, and dominated that midfield.

It's not a fluke when guys play like that. You don't perform like he did tonight and recently if you can't play the game. So let's end this "he's shit" business right here.
