Joe Allen for sale?....

Joe Allen is a rare breed of player; he's a conduit who is completely affected by the quality around him and cannot influence that quality. If he played for Plymouth Argyle he would not look like a Premier League player but paradoxically if he played for Barcelona he could replace Xavi seemlessly. Similarly if Xavi played for us last season and he was trying to "pick a pass" and his options were lucas, Shelvey, or Downing he'd have struggled as much as Allen did.

Yeah, it was his surrounding players auras that were making him miss them. There was a disturbance in the force. His passes would start out on track but physics would break down as his colleagues weren't worthy of his abilities and the ball would roll out of play.

"You cannot go on your own," he says. Well, you can, obviously, as his hero Maradona showed. Everyone doing it would be madness, just as everyone sticking to zones would be Rafa-like in its constriction. But he clearly knows exactly what he's doing with Allen and I'm looking forward to watching the fully-fit player in action.

What we don't know, if Allen would be shit in a shit team and brilliant in a brilliant team, what would a team composed of Allens be like.

Scientists are searching hard at the LHC, looking for the Allen Boson to determine if he has any input to the universe or if he simply assimilates what is already there.

WTF? Slight exaggeration don't you think? Joe Allen is a decent footballer who has talent no doubt. But he's about as close to xavi as shane long is to suarez. total different league. He's not even better than modric let alone Xavi. If Xavi played for Plymouth he would still stand out because he rarely gives the ball away, can receive the ball in the tightest of spaces and his movement around the pitch is exceptional. Plus Xavi has a better passing range and is willing to take more risks with his passes.

Brian Cox here *simper* to explain how Brendan envisages Joe Allen's role in the LFC team next season. Actually, to be fair, Brendan asked for my brother, Isaac, but he was busy, so *simper* I'm subbing for him. Joe will be The Lying Rag. Gerrard will be Mercury, revolving around The Lying Rag. Lucas will be Venus. Downing will be Earth. Coutinho will be Mars. *simper* Other planets will be assigned players after the transfer window has closed.

You missed out about 16 'beautifuls' from that passage.

Glen, I exaggerated most points to make my main point and I doubt he'll ever be as good as Xavi (although I think he could eclipse Modric easily enough). I do however disagree with the point about Xavi starring for Plymouth Argyle, however daft it sounds, i think he'd look like an average 2nd division player for them! His whole style of play is pass-and-move and he rarely stays in possession for more than a few seconds but down in the 2nd division he'd struggle to find players in space and he'd have neanderthals treading on his head within a nano-second.

Sammy Lee was a similar player to Allen (although not as naturally gifted) who played regularly for LFC and England but as soon as he left LFC his career stalled because he didn't have players the like of Souness, R.Kennedy, McDermott, Dalglish etc to interact with i.e. he was able to raise his game to their standards but when he left his standards slipped to the quality of his new surroundings (i think it was QPR and some Spanish club).

IMO no matter how far down the rungs Sammy Lee had gone he would have done no more than "fit in" at the required level.

I'm still a fan of Allen and really rate him.

I also kinda get what Pesam is saying. Maxi is another example of a player who hugely benefits from the players around him. He doesn't have a stand out unique characteristic like pace or power but he compliments those around him excellently.

I play a lot better when surrounded by really good players, but when i play 5 a side with a bunch of slightly overweight office workers in their late 30s, I look like one of them.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

I dont think 15 starts or whatever he has had is enough to judge.
I dont think hes Xavi, nor do I think hes shit. Hes a decent footballer.
Id keep him to see if he becomes a world class one.
He might, he might not.

We saw how good he could be early last season, selling now at his lowest value would be foolish. He's 23, probably on low wages, and as we've seen, has a very high ceiling. Worst case, he's an above average depth option, best case he develops into Xavi Mk II.

Don't know why we're all in such a hurry, getting rid of him isn't a solution to anything this season.

If you call £120k a week low.

Photoshop really is a window into the weakness of the human mind. You don't need your Rorsbach anymore, you can just give a man a few images and half an hour at a computer. You'll know more than you could have wanted.

He's a water carrier, he'll keep the ball moving and feel at ease in pretty, quick-passing triangles, he needs to seriously impose himself more and he needs to influence the games when we're pressed and he doesn't have as much time as he'd like (or when he doesn't have the ball). He's not Xavi, he's an ok player who might flourish in the right set up and when surrounded with quality.

To be "quality" he'd have to have an outstanding ability - he doesn't have goals in him, he's not physical or athletic, he doesn't have a killer pass or long-range ability, he's just a steady potential all rounder who needs to adapt his game and learn how to be effective without the ball. The Xavi comparisons are laughable, as are those writing him off and those bigging him up too much to save face over initial assessments. He's another in similar mould to Lucas and Henderson, a poor first season with minor hints of ability that might be worth being indulgent over, but ultimately right now has us feeling like we've been had again, big time.

I'm no Henderson fan, but there's nothing allen offers that hendo doesn't do better. Plus the fact hendo is more athletic and offers goals.

For the record I think we need better than hendo as well.
