Maybe so. This was a bigger gamble for me - we needed the win today, weren't getting it, and we put on inexperience in place of our best player in the last couple of games. I respect Rodgers for doing it, and I think he was justified by Teixeira's reaction.
I do agree that the Smith one made little sense. I'd like to see Teixeira and Alberto both play against Arsenal, but judging from our lineup v Bournemouth I doubt that will happen.

The most interesting part was leaving Moses on the bench and playing Teixeira instead. Moses was probably the more natural replacement in terms of having the closer style of play to Sterling (minus minus minus Sterling's workrate). Rodgers plumping for Tex instead shows the balls Rodgers has and the confidence he had in the youngster, who repaid him pretty well.

Says a lot about Alberto, Aspas and Moses if Teixeira comes one before them in must win game.

We need more creative ball players to try and break down a stubborn Fulham defence, so in that regard, he made more sense than Moses.

Got a really good feeling about Teixeira, impressed how he slotted right in like he had been there before many times, that bodes really well.

He looked the real deal, shame he fluffed his big chance to be the hero.

Which big chance? The half volley after turning? Or the shot from the edge of the box? Because neither were clear cut, but he had a very good attempt on both.

Personally, I just think it's nice to see a kid come in and try that stuff.

Yeah but he did make a great run just to be there ... passed wide from inside our half and ran like hell to get into the box .... I liked that a LOT because sometimes we really don't get enough people in there to get on the end of crosses.

There was nothing to say he's not the next Ronaldo though, right?

Well Smith almost got the same treatment. Suso got his break against Man U. Brendan is a bit of a dick at times.

I guess you could argue that the tactic is to put them into a high pressured situation and see how they respond, it's one way of seeing if they are ready. He's given enough players opportunities and taken them out the firing line if needs be. There's only one way to find out if a player is ready and that's putting them into a situation where you want a response.

We put Michael Owen on against Wimbledon in a knife edged game and he scored, sometimes you have to just gamble and sometimes it's the only way you'll get a true reflection of a players current level.

Anyway, calling him a dick is harsh, the only reason the current crop are getting a go, is because he's the only manager looking brave enough to let them. He's handled alot of players exceptionally well, you can't account for a players nerves, which I think was the case with Smith.

Why is your response even necessary? For years, we all called for Rafa to give our kids a chance. Granted, Rafa didn't have a youth system to really play with like Kenny, and now Rodgers, have (thanks to Rafa). I don't think giving SUso a chance against Manure, or Teixeira's 10 minutes yesterday, is a sign of a dick - but of a manager who's a) got supreme confidence in the youth system b) wants to continually keep the youth hungry and on their toes and c) a manager who's unafraid of trsuting youngsters regardless of the situation.

I don't think Smith's debut was a smart one - only because he wasn't played in a position where he was that comfortable.

However, as you say, Rodgers has given kids the chance, and if needed, pulled them back to give them time to develop and re-assess how much extra they have to give to become regular contributors at Liverpool. We're already reaping the benefits of this attitude with Flanno and Sterling.

I really really love ROdgers' lack of fear of giving our kids a chance. It's part of how you create a successful youth set up. Rafa laid the foundation, and I think we have the best manager to take advantage of it and take it to the next level.

Well, he made the pass to Studge before the penalty and had a great block at the other end.
Reading Gerrards comments about him it sounds like he deserved his chance after impressing in training.
Took it well and I'm chuffed for him. Sounds like a decent lad aswell.

Throwing kids into the deep end might be a way for him to quickly assess if they've got it or not, but I'm afraid that in worst case scenarios their confidence can go down the toilet.
Yes there are examples of players who've had tough debut's but it's still not a good idea imo.
If the kid is the best option we have on the bench, I'm all for it. Also Texeira is like 21 years old, he's not exactly a kid any more.
I was pretty confident that he'd do well, less so regarding Smith.

‘That what you did there, was fucking brilliant!’

He has a funny backwards-hand-flapping thing when he runs. Did we send him on the same course as Henderson to the ministry of funny runs.

João Carlos Teixeira made his debut for Liverpool on Tuesday night in the club's crucial victory away to Fulham. The way the team fought back to win the game has made the club genuine title contenders and Brendan Rodgers has got his men to within four points of leaders Chelsea.
The young Portuguese midfielder came on with around ten minutes to go and it was certainly a pressure situation in which to make his debut. Portuguese sport newspaper Record got to speak to the 21 year old on Thursday and said he still hadn't come down from the clouds after the excitement of the night before.
Teixeira was very positive about the club and his team mates, and told Record "I'm very happy, it was a great experience and my debut in the Premier League. And to play alongside Gerrard, Suarez and Coutinho has been very good. It was something incredible. I haven't had time to stop and think. Yesterday [Wednesday] was very full of emotions and very busy day. I received great messages, now I rest from all this, reflect and continue to work, because the coach gave me confidence and I gave him my best. I think I did well and now I will work on getting more opportunities."
The youngster is clearly fond of Rodgers and it's no surprise given the confidence Liverpool's manager has put in him. When he sent him on against Fulham he told Teixeira to shoot because Rodgers was convinced he could get the winner "He called me and told me what I had to do on the pitch. Then said to be confident and to shoot at goal too, because he believed I was going to score a goal."
It's a nice touch from Rodgers and Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard also made sure he had some valuable words for the player after the game "The first to talk to me was Gerrard, who said this was only the beginning and that now I had to work the hardest, then get even higher. Suarez told me before the game to be calm and to enjoy the moment because it was the first time."
Record are just as impressed by Teixeira as he is by Liverpool and say the player has a tremendous will to work hard and succeed which they rightly think will serve him well.
