Is this as bad as the early 90's?

Hodgson still has a legendary status in Switzerland.
He took us to the WC 94, we had Italy and Portugal in the group.

Having said that, he's not the man we need.
We all know the one we need.

Are you still sure he'll come without new owners/investment ?

I think Real Madrid are favourites to lure him but we could convince him.
Obviously, it will be hard to get him without new owners but Im sure he would love the challenge.
Hopefully, we can trust Broughton we'll have new owners in the summer and that could be a decisive factor

I don't mind Drogba. He doesn't wind me up that much.

For me, this is the lowest ebb. After Dalglish left, we made some wrong turns but I always felt that it wouldn't take a huge amount to get things right again - just a good manager. I thought Evans might be able to do it... and then I thought Houllier was definitely going to do it. I rarely if ever thought Rafa was going to do it, at least I can't remember ever being really confident. Now, although it's far from being all Rafa's fault, I think we're in danger of fading out and becoming another Spurs type team. We'll continue to have some good players but we won't be a serious club again for quite some time.

Sums me up pretty much as well.

I'm looking forward to being a little bit more positive at some stage.

Hopefully a new coach and new owners with Gerrard and Torres staying will be it.

At a team level, we are better off now than we were early 90s. However, at club level, we are much deeper in the shit.

Also, the competition is much fiercer now (in terms of rival's resources) and we stand more of a chance of falling further behind now than we did back then.

so in conclusion, the main issue is to get new owners in order to get substantial investment in the playing side and attract a new manager of a suitable high ststure to improve our fortunes.

ie... our problems are not on the pitch.

Hahaha... Quite.

No doubt he'll respond with something about the CL Final in Athens in 07. He shoehorns that in somewhere at least 5 times a day.

Of course they are.

The fact that those issues are inextricably linked to the off-the-field issues is by-the-by, but the main issue is we're not competing.

If we were managing to do that despite the other problems, people would still be worried, but far less so. If we'd won the league this year or last, people would be far too caught up in the euphoria to mount a serious bitch about anything, but all of the behind scenes problems are being accentuated by our lack of performance

I don't agree with the idea that the connection between problems on the field and problems off it is "by the by". If that connection is indeed inextricable (and of course it is) it's fundamental to the nature of both, and there never was any realistic prospect of resolving one in isolation from the other.

The off-pitch nonsense has exacerbated the on-filed problems, yes.

But its a bit difficult to call the link 'inextricable; its not as if the owner are to blame for Rafa's transfer choices, tactics and selections.

The early 1990s' were much worse. I was covered in acne, was still a virgin, and King Kenny had gone. Next season will be shit or bust, without resolving our problems off the field and poor first team management then I can see real trouble ahead. Mid table mediocrity here we come.

Avvy, I certainly agree that, whatever the conditions under which he operated, Rafa made his own mistakes and cannot escape responsibility for them. That said, I think I'd stand by "inextricable" given (a) the kitty he was allowed, (b) the conditions under which he was given it - such as the need to sell to buy, or the periodic boardroom paralysis which allowed deals such as that for Aaron Ramsey to slip away - and (c) how those factors stack up against the expectations he was required to meet.

For what it's worth, I agree to an extent - like Avvy says, I don't think the off-the-field antics will have influenced Rafa's decisions - though I believe they've probably niggled at the team as a whole, which is why I think they're interlinked.

However, the main point I was trying to make was that if we weren't seeing all of the other problems manifest themselves on the pitch in such dire performances, then many of us probably wouldn't have given as much of a shit. The fact that we've been *so* horrible just makes the whole thing seem even worse
