I enjoyed my curry more than that game. Bit bland really.

I'm currently on a Lamb Balti Lahori

Lamb Rogan Josh. Plus peshwari naan. Yummy.

I've had barbecue spare ribs, beef curry, egg-fried rice and special chow mein.

With a side order of X Factor (get stuffed Fabio !).

Hmmm, I know I expected us to lose, but watching it unfold didn't make it any easier.

That goal was fucking shattering. They hadn't got in behind us once all night, and whilst the territorial pressure might have been increasing prior to the goal, they French still didn't look like producing anything resemebling great chances. The goal was a cunt of a way to lose. Yes, Kilbane should have cleared his lines better. Yes, we shouldn't have stayed camped on the edge of our box once the ball was partially-cleared, and yes St. Ledger should have got closer to Anelka. But it was a pissy effort, off a standing start, and it took two deflections before reaching the net. We could use Kilbane as a scapegoat (I often have), but goals like that aren't really anyone's fault.

We created some half chances ourselves; O'Shea's effort fell to the wrong man, ditto Whelan's, and a few better final balls would have seen us creating some more obvious chances. We played for the draw though, and didn't get one. As Bunnyman said above, it mightn't work out to be the worst result, as france may be a bit perplexed as to how to approach it, whilst we were always relying on having to go to Paris and score anyway. But the sucker-punch element of Anelka's goal must have hurt the confidence. I think the players felt we didn't deserve that. Whelan and Andrews were excellent in midfield, really really good, and justified their continued selection. I thought Lawrence had a good game, ditto Given, Doyle and Dunne. The way we sit so so fucking deep so as to accomodate Kilbane not getting murdered in behind worries me - France spent the majority of the game playing in front of us, Anelka's no interest in chasing balls anymore, and moving 5-10 yards up the pitch might have led to them coughing it up a touch more.

Keane could have done more. He'll be expected to in France though, as will Duff. The French back four clearly didn't like the long ball approach to Doyle, and I can't believe we didn't make more of some of our set-pieces. There's stuff to work on for Wednesday, and of course the tie's not over. It just feels like it is.

Also, I haven't a fucking clue what Diarra said post-game on Saturday night, but should Richard Dunne deem it necessary enough to absolutely snap the little fucker in two on Wednesday night, I for one shall back him 100%.

Lassana Diarra's low blow brings out Ireland's fighting spirit

David Hytner at Croke Park guardian.co.uk, Monday 16 November 2009

What did the Frenchman say to the Irishman before they headed to the dressing rooms at full-time? Whatever it was, and ranks appear to have closed regarding the specifics, it represented a blow to the Republic of Ireland that felt every bit as low as Nicolas Anelka's wickedly deflected winning goal.

Giovanni Trapattoni, the Ireland manager, said Lassana Diarra's verbal attack on Keith Andrews, which precipitated a confrontation of a more physical nature with players from both teams forming a melee, was an "insult to the Irish people". "I cannot say the sentence," the Italian added. "It's very bad. You cannot insult all the people."

Ireland need no extra motivation for the trip to Paris on Wednesday, for the second leg of this World Cup play-off, but Diarra's apparent gracelessness in victory has ensured that the occasion will be heavily spiced. "I don't want to say exactly what he said," Andrews said, "but he knows what it was, which was a disrespectful comment and it was typical of him, to be honest, and the way that he was. I was hunkered down a little bit when the final whistle went and I saw him walking towards me and I thought he was going to shake my hand. But he made a remark and I lost my head a little bit.

"You don't expect that from a fellow professional. It's a massive two-legged tie, only halfway finished, so for someone to come out like that and say something was bitterly disappointing. But our lads are aware of it and we'll see what happens on Wednesday."

Don't agree about the tactics. The way to frustrate France is to do exactly what you did - sit deep and let them play in front of you. If your back four pushed up, Anelka and Henry would be deadly on the break.

I've seen them struggle at home against ultra-defensive teams so many times that I really half-expect Ireland to go through from this. More likely it'll be a story of last-minute, unlucky, heroic failure, but you never know. Good luck, paddies...

And the Irish Daily Mail has revealed the precise nature of the insult offered by Diarra, who has been on the books of Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth during his career.

The newspaper claims that the Frenchman refused to shake Andrews’s hand at the end of 90 minutes, instead offering the epithet: “Fuck off, Irish prick. You are out.â€

Any of the Irish posters no if the tv rights for the game on Wednesday have been sorted yet ?

I hope Diarra's playing again cos he was cack bar a decent strike at goal. I'm slightly more optimistic than if it had of been 1-1.

Even so............But nobody likes the French!!

well its do or die for the irish with the horrible thought that if they fail it will be FOUR LONG YEARS before they get another chance. OUCH!!

Right...

I've lived in France, love the people, can speak the lingo, and will defend them to the hilt.

But for the next 24 hours, them and their short-arsed cunt of a President, his ride of a wife, their 5th fucking Republic, their right-wing obsession, their Lassana Diarra, their deliciously creamy cheese, and wonderfully produced reds, their Stade de France, their Olmypique de Marseille, their Camus, their Sartre, their Revolution, their croissants, their Cantona, their Bernard fucking Diomede's can all get to fuckety fuck.

Cos If Ireland can somehwo contrive to beat your sorry bunch of surrender-monkeying arses in your own backyard, I'll cry big fat salty tears of joy, cos it'll be quite possibly the greatest achievement in our sorry Footballing history.

ALLEZ LES FUCKING VERTS!
