Promising first season in a well performing squad. Disastrous second season so far.

Lacks pace and positional sense.

Squddie at best.

We should have better in our first team. But he is good enough to be a squaddie.
Also he is young and can improve, especially defensively. He has played some very good games for us and some very bad ones.
Hopefully he can develop so we see more of the former and less of the latter.
Worth holding on to.

I'm always up for reappraising a player after each season, but right now on the balance of this season, he firmly falls into the first category.. shit.

He's cost us so many goals this year, I've lost count..

Has potential, this is his first season and no player has coveted themselves in glory this season.

Lets hope he kicks on next season.

agree with that a lot!

Not very good now but its possible he could improve.
Left backs always seem to be a problem don't they?

Agree with that. His attacking play seems to have improved in the last few games. He put in some cracking crosses.

And touch wood: He never seems to get injured. A trait we could use in more of our players.

In more of our good ones, yeah.

He's VERY young for a first-team regular, which is what he's been this season. Too young, evidently, in his case. I do see some talent there, so I've voted 'potential first-team regular', but his lack of height and pace are definite points against him.

I voted potential first team regular, which I was surprised to see was the largest vote. I thought Insua was seen as shit by this forum. I think he's a cracking prospect. Just 21 and starting out, yet he's holding his own out there. He's comfortable on the ball, good offensively, maybe not so good with a winger running at him, but he'll improve with experience. People should give him a break. We should support our young players and slag off the experienced ones.

I think if he improves his positional sense then i think he could be a solid first teamer. He needs to work more on his overlapping skills too.

His form has improved, after Riera's return to first team action.
That's a fair point actually, because he never really had the protection of anyone decent infront of him before, anyone that would stay wide and provide cover and link up play anyway.

The only thing he's been holding, this season, is Carragher's or Riera's hand.

That's really not true. We've played with 2 LB's on more than one occasion, with the sole aim of protecting Insua.

Didn't help.

That's hardly conclusive proof of anything, for starters Aurelio isn't a natural wide midfielder, so the point still stands that he hasn't really had the luxury of having a natural wide man infront of him, someone that will hold the line and link up, allowing him to overlap and to provide the defensive cover when needed, the latter which is something Riera and Dirk both provide on each flank.

No one's saying he needs a babysitter, but his strengths are going forward, he's still only 21 so he's learning his trade, and he's South American, just to add the the whole 'different footballing culture'. He's far from the finished article by any stretch, but if he'd come into the team that performed for the latter half of last season, I bet people wouldn't be half as hard on him, whatever his current deficiencies.

Fat, slow, rubbish

Another Lucas

Three years of the same people claiming he's a good player/ is still young/ adjusting to the Premiership

Meanwhile every one good display in 10 will be seized upon as 'proof" he is good enough

He isn't. He never will be.

Steven Warnock was equally inept when he was here, his defensive play at times was woeful, particularly his positioning, yet you still hear people on here maintaining that we should have kept hold of him. He's gotten better through age, experience and playing in the the Blackburn and Villa sides consistently, but it's taken time.

Look at the likes of Finnan and Arbeloa, when did they start to look the part at this level?
I don't know. Arbeloa was never a favourite of mine either.

Riise was better at 20 than Insua, though
Riise was great but we were never really sure where to use him at times, whether it be at fullback or left mid. I never really had a major issue with his defensive play, we had a great record with him at left back. Finnan never really started emerging as a top Premiership performer until he was, what? 26/27?

He's worth persevering with, but ideally we'd have a top International fullback infront of him in the pecking order and he'd learn his trade and get games here and there.

he's rubbish. fat, slow and clumsy. its piss easy to drag him out of position and if isn't presented with ZERO opposition he passes it sideways. RUBBISH.

I thought you liked fullbacks that can't defend?

I'm personally not so bothered about his height and not so much about his overall pace either. One of the best fullbacks in the past decade in Argentinian Javier Zanetti wasn't exactly pacy either. Nor tall.

Insuas positional-sense is what worries me the most, but as said he's young so there's no need to panic just yet.

Potential first-team regular indeed.

That's about right really. And regards pace, Finnan was never particularly quick either.
