Let's hope so

Liverpool FC today announced the appointment of leading Australian sports physician Peter Brukner as Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science.

Dr Brukner, who is the current Socceroos Australian football team doctor, will take up the full time position after this year's World Cup in South Africa.

Managing Director Christian Purslow said: "Dr Brukner is recognised across the globe as one of the leading figures in this field. He will play a vital, strategic, role in adding a new dimension to our Sports Medicine and Sports Science services."

Dr Brukner is the founding partner of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne, the largest sports medicine clinic in Australia.

He was instrumental in the development and recognition of sports medicine as a specialty in Australia, which culminated in the recent announcement of specialty status by the Minister for Health.

Formerly an Australian Football League (AFL) Club Doctor with Melbourne and Collingwood, Dr Brukner looked after various Australian national teams including swimming, athletics and hockey.

He has been Australian team doctor at Olympic and Commonwealth Games as well as numerous World Championships. He is the co-author of the best selling sports medicine text book, Clinical Sports Medicine.

"The appointment is an indication of the high regard in which Australian sports medicine is held throughout the world," said Dr Brukner, who will spend the next month at Liverpool observing the set up, before returning to Melbourne in May to help prepare the Socceroos for the World Cup.

"The prospect of working at one of the world's great sporting clubs is very exciting and once the World Cup is over I will be devoting all my energies to improving the performance of the team."

I was just going to say, is this the geyser who said Kewell's injuries were misdiagnosed? Good news for the club either way. Hopefully we can get a full season out of Torres.

Is this a newly created position? I don't remember anyone ever holding that role.

This guy is the absolute shizzle.

Er, maybe this is an odd question but has he done any work I'd be familiar with?

He consulted on my knee operation about 14 months ago, which was pretty big news at the time.

Clearly he's the right man for the job. 😉

Ha.

On a more serious note, he's one of the most respect sports physicians out there. He's worked with every major National side, and comes highly regarded. I'm no expert in this area, but clearly he knows what he's talking about, so hopefully it's a sound addition to the club.

Hope you're right, Ryan, and for what it's worth your personal experience means more to me than if you'd said Kewell recommended him.

One question. If this guy is sooooooooooooooooo good why is he treating Ryan's knee?

Shouldn't he be in demand by the world's top sporting stars, which, with all respect to the good Mr O'Hare, among whom he cannot be counted.

It doesn't really immediately concern me. Australia is relatively small in terms of population and way too far away for anyone to travel there for specialist treatment. The guy has got to make a living.

a think a major part of our injuries is our squad depth. for example if we had another striker who had a high scoring ratio with torres then when torres got injuried there would be no need to rush him back so he would heal properly. but I think some players are just injury prone and no amount of rest and recovery is going to fix that, like aurelio, who imho has blown his chance of a contract extention

Australia is sport mad- Aussie Rules, Rugby League, Real Rugby, Cricket, Athletics, all being played to a very high professional standard in front of massive audiences. It's a smaller pond than 'Europe', but it isn't the Isle of Man.

Perhaps Ryan is a bigger star than any of us realised?

Anyway, it sounds a more promising appointment than hiring Newcastle's physio team, which is what we did last time. Injuries have really hurt us this season, so any improvement on that front would be hugely welcome.

I'm sure I've heard of one or two sportsmen going there from the Northern Hemisphere, though admittedly not many, but in any case it's only natural that Ryan's doctors would consult such an expert and I rather like the idea that he doesn't spend ALL his time on big stars. Maybe he and Ryan's doc ware mates or trained together or something.

Yeah, this does sound like really good news. I've argued before that injuries are all too often seen as an unfortunate incident when they're nothing but the sort.

Having Fernando insured by a Newcastle medic is akin to leaving a scally lad look after Lambourigini for a quid. No, no , no!

Hicks and Gillett are coming to terms with our impending permanent slide down the table. Ryan is actually on our summer transfer list.

Doc - I got injured in training, and the club I was playing for at the time paid for me to go private and get it operated on. They, like most soccer clubs here, have links and deals with MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre) where Peter works, and he was the one I got referred to.

A mate of mine from Melbourne Victory had his knee reco done through him as well so helped sort out the referral.

That's it really.

So you're not playing for Liverpool next year then? We could use the cover for Torres. (You are a striker, if I recall?) And the moral support for Lucas would be invaluable.

I live about 3500 kms from Ryan yet strangers regularly come up to me in the street and ask how he is. ‘On form’ I usually reply, occasionally adding ‘His analysis can’t be beat’.

Also, I once got my hole twice in a week on the back of him sending me a private message on SCM.

Over here, he’s up there with Yahoo Serious, make no mistake.

(Only joking mate)

Ha.

I'm in Perth again next month actually, if you're up for pretending that you're chating on your missus, lets meet for a beer.

HAHA! I actually Googled Ryan`s name to try to find out his position. And Ryan, must say you were mentioned on Australian Four-Four-Two's site a few times and in each one you'd scored a goal (and not in there for making a blunder), so well on you. I take the piss a lot but I'd love to be playing even at the level and quality you are.

Ryan is the Dirk Kuyt of Whittlesea Zebras.

And he's available on a free transfer if memory serves.

So we ARE signing him? I can't keep up with this transfer merry-go-round.
[/quote]

He's be a very "Rafa" signing... well if only Ryan was from South America as opposed to County Down.
