In defense of the defence

Kinda meant the goals scored.

In a thread about the defence & in reference to a post about conceding fewer goals in the second half of the season.

Yes.... I can see why you'd bring up the attacking midfielder.

I'm sorry, didn't know that Carra helped us score 24 more goals.

Why did Hansern mention it in his post then?

He didn't post it as relevant to us tightening up at the back, that's just you reading things how you want to read it. He pointed out both improvements, you chose to put emphasis on the one that credited the player you like.

Quelle fucking surprise, you monotonous fucking drone.

Well if you read my post, it ended with "as well" clearly acknowledging Carra's involvement.

OK semi clearly. Would it suffice if I said that Carra has been great this season and CLEARLY strengthened our back line?

Much better.

Now just add that Downing has been improved and added some much needed balance to the attacking line and we'll be almost there.

Then how do you explain the fact we have outscored Spurs and City this season and yet we are miles behind them in terms of points on the board, we need to tighten up at the back. Our defence has been poor in two areas

1 Dealing with crosses
2 Individual errors mainly caused by trying to play the ball out from the back

But to me the real problem is that the midfield sitting in front of them offers no protection at all, thats all well and good for Barca who just starve the opposition of the ball no matter who they play, but good teams can get at us and when they do our midfield gives them free reign to run at our defence

The total goals scored stat is misleading. We beat some teams heavily but hardly ever scraped wins. I bet we had less narrow wins than spurs and city.

Maybe so, but it can also be seen as us changing 1-0 or 2-0 games (where we play nervously, and sometimes let the other team back in the game) of seasons gone by into 4-0 or 5-0 massacres this season.
I see no negative whatsoever in our increase in goals.

Me neither, I'd rather be in that position where we know we are capable of putting teams to the sword, than scraping wins narrowly and constantly being at risk of a draw and or defeat due to narrow scorelines. Of course we need to show we can roll our sleeves up and grind out a win, at places like Stoke for example, but we're moving in the right direction. What we need to cut out is the lapses in concentration at the back and we need to be more commanding, we get that sorted and the rest will take care of itself because there's clearly alot of goals in us.

We lack athleticism and power in the middle of the park though. It doesn't have to be a designated DM, but we do lack the genuine ability to cover ground and out muscle opponents. It's not just about firepower, we've had a reasonable amount at times and still looked brittle everywhere else.
This sums it up quite nicely. We need a dynamic and powerful CM who can dictate the pace of the game and covers alot of ground much like Gerrard in his pomp. Wiltshere type player is exactly what we need because Gerrard is a one-off. We won't see the likes of him again.

I've only seen Diame once in the game against us at Upton Park, and he absolutely bossed the middle. I'm convinced we wouldn't have won if he hadn't gone off injured. I haven't watched any other West Ham games other than the sorry return fixture at Anfield (why would I watch them? - it's a Fat Sam team...), so I'd like to know if this was just another one-off wonder game like Kevin Fucking Lisbie and his ilk had against us?

He was with Wigan for 3 seasons before being released on a free and picked up by West Ham. Didn't anyone else notice him back then? I'm just wondering if I should be hoping that we get him in a cash + player deal in exchange for Carroll, to beef up our centre and give Lucas some competition.

We were heavily linked with him last summer. He's got dodgy knee ligaments so it was a risk, but he has looked a decent player whenever I've seen him. He holds on for the ball too long at times - that's his major weakness, and in his position it can be costly.

Cheers, thanks for that. Dodgy knee ligaments eh? He'll fit right in here then. In the last 24 months, we've had Lucas, Kelly, Yesil and Brad Smith do their cruciate ligaments. If not, he can always bang a shoulder and join Allen, Borini and Gerrard.
