If not Martinez

Newcastle's biggest problem is Mike Ashley, if they can get rid of him they might have a chance.

Compared to seasons gone by, then yes. Don't see how that's such a mental comment to make?

What the good fuck are you going on about about how many times have they been ahead of us in the last decade, when was the last time they won a trophy and all this shite? what has that got to do with the here and now?

Look at the players they've got - Coloccini, Cabaye, Tiote, Ben-Arfa, Demba Ba, Cisse. If they hold on to them and add to their squad in the summer, they'll be a threat for us and others. They're a very good side and Pardew is a good manager. With that in mind, i think it would be very difficult to persuade a Newcastle player to join us considering where both Clubs are at and what the future may hold for both.

WUM is a word thrown about with fuck all substance to back it up. Oh you've made a comment i don't like, i'll just label you a WUM and hopefully that tag will stick.

Ah yes, 'what am I going on about' ... Newcastle vs Liverpool ... What has it got to do with anything. I guess we'll judge the clubs based on the last 8 months or so, and the current standings. My bad.

Mike Ashley. What are your thoughts about how he's run Newcastle? So he's got it 'worked out' this past year with Pardew after letting go of a highly popular manager, and signing a few cheap Frenchies that turned out really well. Coloccini is at best average - he's had a great season. And yes, the players you've listed are all solid players - and all who are being linked with moves away. Now based on Ashley's behavior in the past few years, will he 'hold on to them and add further to their squad'?

Pardew is a good manager? Debatable. Isn't this the best year he's had in his career?

The WUM term has been used with you because you make statements that just look like they're looking for a reaction. When we took Didi from Newcastle, where they in better shape? When we took Carroll, were we really in 'better shape' after selling our best striker? When we took Enrique, were we really in 'better shape' than Newcastle? I mean come off it ...

Fucking hell, talk about going round and round in circles. Right, the name of Cabaye came up as a potential signing for us, yes? I simply stated the point that i think it would very difficult to prize a player away from Newcastle to go to a Club that's 8 points lower in the League, that finished 7th last season and all in all, there's not not a shred of evidence to suggest we'll be much better off next season. So, with all that in mind i'm far from convinced we'd be an attractive Club for a Newcastle player to move to. Of course if they lose a few of their main players think could change, but as it stands now, i don't think the future is in any way more bright for us than The Toon.

I rate Pardew as a Manager, and always have.

Whether they're "cheap Frenchies" or not, they've hit the ground running and look like quality players.

I'm not looking for a reaction whatsoever, you can think what you want.

I think our future is always bright. We can still attract a Suarez, a Torres, a Mascherano etc ... They won't. Now, they've attracted excellent talent (players who've now grown in stature, and value, due to their seasons) - and props to them, I'd have taken Cabaye > Adam, Ba > Carroll etc ... Their players have done what ours couldn't. Props to them.

As I said, I'd have rather had 'cheap Frenchies' over some of our signings this year ... Well, as long as it wasn't Ferri style cheap.

Would you want Pardew as a Liverpool manager? Just curious -

Agree, we're still far more likely to attract star players abroad than Newcastle are. I was just referring to Cabaye and any other Newcastle player. I don't think they'd be overly keen on joining us with the way things are now.

No, i wouldn't want Pardew as Liverpool. I think he's the perfect fit for Newcastle where he has time to build a side and they don't have expectations similar to ourselves. I do think he's a good Manager though, but there's a lot of Managers i rate without wanting them to be LFC Manager.
Personally i think Brendan Rodgers is the one to watch. Be very interesting to see how he progresses in the seasons to come.

Hoilett has been sensational every time I've watched him and is everything we expected from Downing. On a free would be great.

Martinez, Defour, Banega and M'vila are all good shouts to partner Lucas but first prize has to be a goalscoring striker. Gomez it won't be so Cavani or Lavezzi?

our first priority should be buying someone who will help us win the midfield and link the midfield with the attack, if we have more of the ball the likes of gerrard and suarez WILL score more goals.

Most of us, following SaintGeorge's pick a while back, have been in awe of Bilbao's Javi Martinez. He is the complete package for a CM - someone who we could build our midfield around for the next decade. However, the likelihood of him coming to us is minimal. We do need someone to play the middle (as I doubt Henderson will be given the responsibility next year, and Adam is out of his depth).

So if not Martinez ...

I'd go for someone who was mentioned here quite a bit last year, and highly recommended by Bunny, Yann M'Vila of Rennes. He's got it all - like Martinez - and would probably cost 15-20 million instead of 25-30 ... I think he'd be an excellent pick up.

M'Vila is excellent, but he's much less of an attacking threat than Martinez. He'd be perfect for the defensive midfielder role, with Martinez in front of him.

So, both of them it is then.

I hear you Spidey but I beg to differ.

There's no reason why Gerrard can't partner Lucas in CM. They'll do pretty well together and Gerrard still has the engine to get about. The Spearing Lucas partnership showed potential too. Lucas' injury unfortunately turned our season around and we fell flat simply because we didn't have an adequate replacement to afford our defence any protection and, win the midfield battle. We are soft in the middle without Lucas and his return will address that issue.

We may have lacked a fair bit of flair and creativity but we have created a plethora of chances despite our lack of guile. Our profligacy in front of goal and poor finishing has systematically eroded our confidence and belief.

A goal scoring striker would have made an unbelievable difference to our season. Who knows how many if any of those shots that hit the post went in where we'd be?

Hi Guillem, Do you think Atheltic Bilbao will be able to keep hold of their star players this summer? Fernando Llorente, Iker Muniain, Javi Martinez and Ander Herrera would improve any Premier League side and have all been linked with moves away. What are the chances of any of them leaving and in particular, do you know how strong Manchester United's interest is in any of them? Thanks. Shane Farrington

GUILLEM SAYS: Martinez would be a very expensive signing - 40million plus. That means you really have to think of him as the main star of your team. Barcelona are looking at him as a centre back possibility or he can play central midfield. If someone is willing to spend that kind of money - and that's a big if - then he is most likely to stay in Spain. Llorente will have a year left on his contract, but he is dragging his heels on signing a new deal and there is an opportunity for English sides to go and get him. He's had offers in the past from Spurs and Liverpool were in touch with before they signed Fernando Torres and then opted for Andy Carroll. And Fulham could have got Llorente for £1.5million at one stage but at the time - I won't say who the manager was - they didn't think he was good enough. He is most likely to leave. Ander Herrera will stay, Martinez will be sought by Barcelona or Real Madrid and Iker Muniain - who will be a superstar - will probably stay another year.

If we're looking at that kind of player, we should look at Kevin Strootman or Milan Badelj, both of whom would be far more realistic. Or of course, see what Shelvey is made of first. If Shelvey can be that sort of central midfield playmaker we're looking for, I'd rather we focus our attention to a proper defensive holding player.

Strootman is supposed to be going to united as the 'new Roy Keane' isn't he?

He's nothing like Roy Keane though. He's a left-footed playmaker like, let me think of a comparison. Say a rich man's Edu (the one who used to play for Arsenal).
