We never talk about him. But I love him.
Dont remember him playing of course but he served us for 10 years under Shanks and was part of the team that built the modern liverpool.
But the man I know is the one who still calls Liverpool 'Us' still says 'we are' still talks as positively and passionately about the club as he did in the 60's

We often talk about legends of the club. The Saint is one of the best for me.

Yep. I can't remember seeing him play, mainly because - as far as I know - I never saw him play. But I grew into consciousness absorbing reverential stories about him. What a player he sounds like he was. The man, however, I'd really, really, love to know more about is Sir Roger: I know people who practically collapse and pray at the sound of his name and I realise I know little save for black and white clips and a few stories. There's about 40 seconds of an interview of him now on the Echo site following the Shanks event: that's the first I've seen of him for ages. The guy is a legend, yet his modesty has stopped him from being recognised by young fans. A huge shame. There should be a documentary at the very least.

Met the Saint a couple of times. Top man. Genuine enthusiast, you can see why Shanks loved him. Never saw him play live, but when you watch his game he was a real fiesty fucker with great skill and could read the game well.

This vid of him punching out an opponent is hilarious. Imagine that happening today. There'd be questions in parliament.

Spent an evening watching a European away in the bar at the top of the Radio City tower with him once (amongst about 20 others) at the end of the game he offered a lift to anyone who needed one. I didn't need one, but got him to drop me off down Doctor Duncan's anyway.
The other time he was talking to my old man sat on the end of my hospital bed. Surreal that one.

Oh, and Saint and Greavsie was ace.

.

Yer man grabbed him by the hair, which was beyond the pale even in my day. That was a womanly way to fight. The Saint was well within his rights there.

Absolutely. As good a shot on him as Gerrard and in his own way just as dynamic. And he enjoyed playing.

I used to love Saint and Greavsie. I remember feeling sorry for Greavsie that time his hat blew off.

Another we don't honour enough is Emlyn Hughes in my opinion.

I suspect part of that was the perception of Hughes the person as opposed to Hughes the player. I've met many a scouser who didn't like Hughes because he was "tory who sucked up to the Royals".

According to Tommy Smith's autobography, Hughes was not a popular person in the dressing room either.

Tommy Smith fucking hated Hughes though. You can't accept his word on Hughes surely?

He called his son Emlyn and his daughter Emma Lynne.

What a complete fucking clarkson.

He can't have been that unpopular in the dressing room can he? He was captain for two European Cup wins. I love both Hughes and Smith, but Tommy is a mad old racist according to some. All heroes have their flaws. I wonder how much of Smith's dislike for Hughes came from Shanks taking the captaincy off him and giving it to Crazy Horse?

Can I just clarify:

I'm not saying I didn't like Hughes. Someone posed the question as to why he didn't get the love that others got and I suggested a reason.

I'm not taking Tommy Smith's word on it. Just saying that it was what he said.

For the record I love Emlyn's enthusiasm for the game.

Youre out of order man, what you hating on a legend for?

St John lived next door to my best friend at school, about 200 yards from our house. We were always pestering him, regularly knocking at his to ask for the ball back. He was a gent who always offered us a biscuit or a drink, and didn't try to groom us in any way at all. Top man.

It was mainly that, wasn't it? Emlyn was a brilliant captain, That probably made it worse for Smith.

I went to one of his summer footy school things and was surprised to find (after watching this benign gent on TV) that he was a foul mouthed lunatic who's first piece of advice was to leave my laces loosely tied and to try and catch people's studs with them if they ran alongside me.
