"Goal.com earlier reported that Mr Ian Ayre would be subject to losing his job as Fenway Sports Group have lost patience with him, especially after the deadline-day situation was handled.

Concurrently, the Australian Football League (AFL) chief operating officer, Gillon McLachlan, has been offered a contract to become CEO of rival sporting code the National Rugby League worth around $1.5 million a year. Late tonight, someone from Fenway Sports Group has inquired about Mr McLachlan's services and they have proposed a deal that is north of $2 million a year (as reported on Australia's Channel 7 about 10 minutes ago).

Mr McLachlan has not accepted the offer as yet but is rumored to be willing to take the job. This will be in Australian newspapers tomorrow morning, I just thought it would be best to spread the news while it's hot.

What can be confirmed at this very stage is that Mr Ian Ayre will either be made redundant or will be shifted to another role within the organisation."

So our Baseball loving American owners are going to replace Ayre with the #2 in the Australian Rules Football league?

He should return to the Commercial department. You would have thought playing people in the wrong position is a lesson Liverpool has learnt from.

Massive Breaking News: #LFC MD to be sacked as FSG have officially offered #AFL number 2 Gillon McLaughlin, offer north of $2m a year.

Official offer of $2m a year for potential new #LFC MD, confirmed in Australia, Dillon McLaughlin the name, #2 in AFL comp.

It must be clarified that McLaughlin has yet to accept the offer but the damage is done and it''s official, Ian Ayre is losing his job. #LFC

He was offered $1.5m p/year from rival code to become CEO. He is a truly great, lateral thinking businessperson.

Having followed his decision-making and the organisation (AFL) closely, I assure you that #LFC will be in a much better place.

Mr McLachlan is far more focused on operations, not involved with the sporting element.

Wasn't his forte supposedly to be in marketing? Weird appointment in the 1st place.

looks like he was offered the job previously. AFL season starts in March I think

AFL powerbroker Gillon McLachlan this season knocked back a dream job with English Premier League club Liverpool.
In a sign of his growing reputation as a sports administrator, Liverpool offered him the prime chief executive's role.

It is believed the tempting overture came in the opening months of the AFL season.

The National Rugby League has since started a hot pursuit of the AFL's No.2 man.

McLachlan said no to Liverpool, one of the most famous clubs in the world, because he was happily settled in Melbourne with a young family.

It would have been an enormous upheaval to move to northern England.

It is not unusual for club chief executives in the EPL to be paid more than $2 million a year.

McLachlan, the AFL's chief operating officer, also remains content in his role as key lieutenant to chief executive Andrew Demetriou.

But the offer to join the NRL is far more tempting for McLachlan, who has been grappling with the decision in recent days.

The situation remains delicately poised, even though McLachlan yesterday told 3AW: "I'm pretty happy with doing what I'm doing and not in a rush to look at anything, to be honest with you."

McLachlan, whose status soared after spearheading the AFL's successful negotiation of a $1.25 billion broadcast deal, is weighing up a $1 million-plus a year offer to fill the NRL CEO's position vacated by David Gallop.

He is now so highly rated he looms as a near certain successor to Demetriou in the top job at the AFL, but the league boss seems in no hurry to move on.

There is no angst between the pair, who have a smooth working relationship.

Demetriou said on Friday: "He's got a very big decision to make ... I'm sure that he will make a decision very soon. He has to make a decision for our sake."

McLachlan was not expansive when asked about his future yesterday, only saying: "I haven't confirmed or denied anything other than I've had a chat with those (NRL) guys".

There were also reports yesterday that Essendon chief executive Ian Robson was high on the NRL hit list if McLachlan did not take the job.

Yeah, weird appointment. Now we're appointing some guy from a completely different Sport.

Why don't we just appoint Steffi Graf and be done with it.

I don't think Ayre was their first choice for CEO
Didn't they promise a top drawer CEO but were knocked back by at least one candidate before appointing Ayre?

Whatever it is, they need to sort that shit out quick and get someone on the first available plane to Shanghai.

That's the point. Innit. You need someone who knows the fecking game and is respected by peers. Not making rookie errors. Jesus wept, we are grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory for this transfer window..

As Count said the AFL season starts in March - the regular season finishes tomorrow with finals starting next week and the Grand Final the last Sat of Sept.

So, he'd probably be free from October onwards.

Can't tell you much about this guy - not particularly high profile, in the sense that he's not a media whore like Demetriou - but AFL is run pretty well from a sporting administration standpoint.

I was hoping that FSG had nabbed David Dein prior to the installation of Ayre. Peter Robinson's leaving was an enormous loss for the club.

Dein apparently has involvement with inner circle & that's how they've used his services as consultant in the past. I believe he is one of the main people referred to as a 'football person' by fsg.

Unfortunately I fear if he wanted the job he'd have had it yonks ago.

yeah i really wanted Dein too, sure there must be others like him though

FSG love to have a scapegoat. Not saying Ayre was perfect, he was far from it but isn't it about time THE OWNERS took a little bit of the blame for any fuck ups?

I did think that the timing is a bit coincidental.
Fans are up in arms so the CEO gets the flick

Well, he did fuck up though. A gigantic horrendous fuck up.
Worthy of the sack? Well, thats another matter. I'd love to know what went on yesterday

Someone needs to be sacrificed.

I believe Dein was advising FSG at times. If Ayres goes, do people still think things are cool behind the scenes? What's more worrying is how many directors FSG are getting through as well.
