I know what we didn't do last Summer...

Thought it'd be interesting to check on the progress of those were were strongly linked to in the Summer that we didn't end up getting for various reasons. These are the ones I can think of, and it looks like we didn't really miss out on much eh?

Tuncay - 30 games, 5 goals for Stoke. He only got in the team because Pulis fell out with James Beattie, and he's still got a haircut like an unruly bunch of pubes.

Michael Turner - Only Portsmouth have kept less clean sheets than Sunderland. They've been a shambles defensively all season long, and in Turner's benefit he hasn't played in all of them, but 23 appearances is a lot and they've been as solid as diarrohoea. Still, decent player, and might come good in the long run.

David Silva - Quelle surprise, he's been injured. Still, played 20 games and 4 goals. Not much to get overly excited about there.

Downing - How much did they pay for him, 12M? 24 games, 3 goals, and has only started to look anything more than half-decent over the last month or two.

Lee Cattermole - Like Sunderland, started the season off like a house on fire. Then he got injured, and has struggled since. Good player, solid, hard in the tackle, and can play too. Reminds me so much of Steve McMahon it's untrue. He's have helped us no doubt, but is Lee Cattermole really gonna cut it when it gets to the latter stages of say, a Champions League campaign. Look at that Chelsea-Inter game last night, the likes of Cambiasso and Motta would fucking monster someone like him.

...

And people have been complaining about Aquilani and Johnson eh?

Who else was there? That's all I can recall for now.

I think that could be a case to argue that everyone we looked at over the summer would have been a shit signing and our scouts are muck. Just playing Devil's advocate here.

I really can't remember who else we were linked with. I'll have a think...

Awesome aint it?

I've needed to up my game since "that formation won't work" really.

Comparing how these players are doing at shit sides to how they would have played for us is so pointless you'd think I came up with the thread.

Comparing Apples with Oranges.

Tuncay would have shone for us as would Milner.

Dreamy, you megafuckingtron of stupidity - I WASN'T MAKING ANY COMPARISONS.

Just a boring thread to check on the status of those we didn't get. That's it. It's not pro-Rafa, it's not excuse-making, it's nothing. Now give the fuck over.

Tuncay would have been Zenden for us. Out of that lot, Cattermole is about the only one I was particularly interested in. (Wouldn't mind Silva, of course, but never really fancied him that much).

(So you can tell what I'm posting about...)

I really wanted Adam Johnson despite having seen him only a few times.

Young: Check
English: Check
Left Winger: Check
Good attitude: Check
Cheap: Check

We really missed the boat there. He's looking very good for City.

I know we're going off on a tangent here, but Niko Kranjcar for 2M was the deal of the fucking Century.

Yeah, I said remember saying that when he moved. I was shocked at how little Portsmouth accepted for him.

Arsenal offered around £12-15M the summer before and a year later he went for a pittance. I doubt we'd have had a chance of getting him, though, what with the Redknapp factor, and all his mates now being in London.

If he'd gone to a big club he would've gone for a lot more but Spurs got an absolute steal with that one. Especially considering how well he played for Pompey on the run-in last season. The performance for Croatia against England alone should have seen his value hit 10 M.

Spurs are a big club mate, and as a result have paid over the odds for promising wingers from smaller clubs before.

18M for Bentley anyone?

Sorry, I should have specified Big Four. I haven't a clue how Harry got him that low, regardless of his Pompey connections, etc. If we'd be linked with him he would have been 7 M at the minimum, in my opinion. He's a cracking player.

Yep we should have shipped out Reira and brought in Johnson hes looking great.

As for the left side, does anyone know how Mata at Valencia has gone this season? I know we were linked in the summer.

Cattermole is a good player but I just not sure if hes top 4 quality. He could be a decent replacement for Lucas if he is gone in the summer maybe.

Gareth Barry... had we actually got him, would have left us in a much better position now. Of course, not selling Alonso would have as well, but we managed to get the best of both worlds.

I wanted us to sign Barry but have to say I've been quite unimpressed with him this season. He would obviously have been an improvement on Lucas but IMO he has not given City value for money.

We were linked with Richard Shawcross who has had a fairly good season despite breaking Ramsey's leg.

So was Fergie correct when he said there was no value in the transfer market last summer ?

Crazy how City had such little competition for Johnson. I wanted him here.

Wasn't Rebel a big fan?

*Realises he might be opening a car of worms*

I thought the money for Milner was a joke at 11.5 million at the time. He is turning into a cracking player. Can play all over the park, a player Rafa would usually love.

My favourite thing about the rumoured links last summer was Gene's thread title asking whether 'we should sign Cat or Mole?

There was value for money to be found. We just didn't.
Maxi for free helps though.

This is the biggest summer in our history. We need at least 2 world class players. We need a new LB, CB, LM, CF minimum and we have very little to come in from sales. Maybe 15m for riera and babel.
It's gonna be wheeler dealer city.

Wasn't last summer the biggest summer in our history too ?

I've got little or no faith that Benitez will get it right this summer, he's gotten it too wrong in the past few years.

Hows Eto'o doing? He was linked and it seemed only me and Spider wanted him here.
Hi Guillem. I was wondering lately if Barcelona made a mistake in buying Ibrahimovic? He doesn't fit in with the team, I think Barcelona plays better without him, as seen against Valencia. Maybe he could play on the wing or something? Nothing is working for him for a couple of months now. I think Barcelona can't get anywhere if this mess continues (playing Ibra as a striker). As for another question, will Barca go on a buying spree this summer? Henry, Toure and maybe some other players will go away this summer. Defence is not doing very well, Vidic maybe the target (he denied any speculations). Jan Fink

GUILLEM REPLIES: It certainly doesn't seem to be working. He's scoring less goals that Eto'o and his body language suggests that he's not very happy at the moment. He's not very mobile and isn't providing Barcelona with what they need. His form has forced the manager to tweak their system a little.

But people should also remember that Eto'o is struggling at Inter. I think he has only scored around nine goals in all competitions this season. What Barca miss is the way Eto'o would aggressively put defenders under pressure, which led to them losing possession in dangerous areas. That's something they no longer have.

I think Barca will try to buy two from the Valencia trio of Juan Manuel Mata, David Villa and David Silva. They'll probably try for Franck Ribery but he looks set to go to Real Madrid, and also Cesc Fabregas.

I'd be surprised if we signed another striker in addition to Jovanovic without significant investment coming into the club or the sale of one of our first team players.

Why is it 'The biggest summer in our history'? What's so big about this summer more than any other?
