How much can we scrape together?

Ronnie Whelan played as a holding midfielder (before they were called holding midfielders)when we last won the title. I think.

Anyway, I agree with both of you; versatile CM players are great, the right blend is great, but having at least one player who shields the defence is vital

Again, the Vieira/ Petit holding nmidfield axis is as good as it gets in the modern era

How much we can scrape together maybe irrelevant by the end of the week, just been told there is possibly going to be a statement at the end of the week regarding investment.

Before we had mascher we didn't have a mascher and we played better football. I'm not arsed about a like for like player and would rather have someone who can pass the ball a bit at the expense of not being the best tackler around.

I don't know about that Crump, we had a Didi, who was a spoiler, and we missed him when he wasn't there.

I am in the camp that we need to hear first hand what Mascher wants, to be fair he made no bones about the issue this time last year

If he wants out fair enough, we will use the money on different things, if he wants to stay I will be delighted

I don't think Maschers passing abilities are that bad either to be honest. He has his moments , but then again so does Stevie (and no that is not a direct comparison)

Two things...

1) Didi was twice the footballer Masch could ever dream of being
2) We didn't win the league with either of them.

I appreciate that's a very binary way of looking at it, but lets think back to our last DMs we won the league with.... Sometimes Molby... who could pass the ball as good as anyone on the planet, sometimes McMahon, who could wang it anywhere on the pitch from the edge of his own box... Both of whom knew were the goal was.

I wouldn't disagree ,but your inference seemed to suggest that we have operated without an out and out defensive midfielder which we have not.
I said the other day, it may be better to rely on the back four to defend , and not allocate a midfield player whose whole raison detre is to help them out sometimes to the point of almost making it a back five, but I am sure Roy will be a little less cautious, but will still utilise someone in that role.
Having said that and if Macher is one dimensional I can't understand how was he runaway leader on all boards of the player of the season last year?

wow

One way or another Mascherano's future will be sorted as soon as he arrives. If we receive any bids that meets our valuation, then Roy will consider his options.

This saga is tiring and I want closure ASAP! If he goes then we need to do the deal quickly and get in a replacement.

This. Though Alonso-Mascherano would probably have matched and possibly bettered that that had they stuck together.

We needed defensively minded midfielders and someone needs to cover, but not at the expense of being able to play football. I'm not having a go at Rafa because there were pros and cons of his system, but I would hope that the football this year is a bit more creative and that next year a yard dog (albeit the best one around) won't be celebrated as being the best player we have. I think he must have won the plaudits because he's got the best song.

Yes that must be it old chap, that and the fact that despite him wanting to go , he still looked like one of the few one who actually gave a toss for a large lump of the season.

Lets not get to carried away, although the info is off the usual lad and he has said its from a good source. Just a bit wary we have had so many false dawns.

Hope if we do get investment it's sooner rather than later. Wasn't City's on the last day of the transfer window? Surely we'll miss out on some targets if that's the case.

Yeah Vlad, I was of course messing about that... but I think I'll miss the song as much as I'll miss him if we can replace with a more creative option who doesn't mind covering the defence.

If we sell Mascher for about 25 mill £, a direct replacement should be Khedira. He's going for around 8-9 mill euros. And then get another striker and a left back.

Olympiakos are also interested in Lucas, we want 13.5 mill £.

That's probably why Masch get's so much praise.

Oops, bit of a quiff there. Never mind.

I didn't think the problem last season was Mascher's lack of creativity, but the fact that he was partnered with the equally uncreative Lucas. ONE out-and-out DM is fine; two is a recipe for shit football.

I'd rather keep him, with or without new investment.

I really can't masch leaving if i'm to be honest, I just can't see inter meeting our 30 mil valuation and i doubt we will move from that.

Inter are linked with Kuyt aswell today. He won't move though, no matter how much Rafa loves him.

If Inter sell Balotelli for a ridiculous sum of money to City, they'll probably pay us way over the top for Mascher.

Wouldn't mind that Sissoko lad who plays for Toulouse either, looks a great player.

That was tagged on at the end of the riera article wasnt it! Didnt really elaborate much after we we're said to quote that price. If we get that much for Lucas id spend all of next season laughing.

Alonso's departure exposed the fact that we didn't have another CM capable of receiving the ball from the defence before turning and passing it forward. This lead to excessive hoofing and shite play in general.

I believe in Roy and have confidence that he will remedy this and the other glaring faults from last season that Rafa seemed oblivious to.

Gerrard has a history of cuntish behaviour?

Go and fuck yourself, he's still here isn't he?

Just got back from fucking myself...and I still think Gerrard has a history of cuntish behaviour.

That took longer than I expected, but as I said earlier, you seem to have no real clue about what a good footballer looks like. Or a cunt, for that matter

Nuts to that. Creativity isn't exactly Masher's middle name but as a destroyer at DM he's the best, and I mean THE best, there is. Without him everybody, not just his replacement, is going to have to defend more. And we never played better football under Rafa than we did at the arse end of the 2008/9 season when Masher was very much part of our set-up.

I'm not gonna list everything Gerrard has done to be labelled a cunt by me. Sure, he's great player but I'm not swayed by the "I'm staying" claim.
