How much can we scrape together?

So, just a recap on the selling of the deadwood, and how much we're getting for it all:

Insua £5m - deal done
Riera £4.3m - deal nearly done
N'Gog £3-6m - in negotiations
The Greek £3m? - rumours of offers
Degen £1-2m? - been told he can leave
Babel £7-10m - rumours of interest, but no confirmation we want to sell as yet
El Zhar £1m? - been told he can leave
Plessis £0.7m - deal nearly done (I think)
Spearing £0.5-1m - been told he can leave (I think)
Cavalieri £2m? - haven't seen much about this one

Who am I missing? Even if we err on the low side with those unconfirmed figures, that's still about £30m there. So far our only outgoings have been £2m for Wilson and whatever Joe Cole's signing-on fee was, and I guess those would be covered by Yossi being sold for £5.5m.

So here's my point: if we sell all those players, we could probably buy two new LBs, a reserve goalie and a new striker without having to sell Mascherano. Obviously he wants to leave, but he wanted to leave last summer too, and was still brilliant for us last season. I just think we'll be a much better team if we can keep him, and hopefully if we play better football, win more matches, and get back in the CL, he might even be tempted to sign his new contract. What do you think?

It's all the wages too. There's at least 10 million off the annual bill if you get shut of that lot.

I don't see how a 2nd rate goalkeeper warrants a £2 Million fee
Haven't heard anything about Spearing leaving.
Don't forget Mascherano.
We could easily recoup around £40 Million all in all.

I think it's probably a little optimistic. I would imagine a fair chunk of that money will go towards paying contracts off and fees. Either way, Masher wants to leave for non-footballing reasons primarily, doesn't he?

I have a question.

Somewhere on the interweb (I mean this site) i read that Purslow has said "Our transfer account is now handled in American fashion" - i.e. The wage for the contract length is detected from the transfer account along with the signing fee, when a player comes in.

If that is the case, when we sell a player, the wages for the remaining period of the contract duration should also be added to the transfer account....right?

So we should have more funds then?

Dunno, to be honest. Some say it's his wife. But he's acting like a proper cunt about it. Why not just come out and say I love the club I love the fans, Liverpool helped my career but we're not settled here and we'd be happier in Spain or Italy.

That's exactly it, and how most businesses work, looking at fixed income and overheads and working within those parameters. Our squad is full of shit earning far too much, so it must be very tempting to any new manager to let half of the bad ones walk for nothing and put the million-plus they're each earning a year towards a decent contract for something who can make the difference.

Why should he? Gerrard didnt come out and say anything until he got back to training and there was loads of speculation about him leaving. It was the fact that some were resigned to him going and felt he didnt owe us anything that there wasnt all the agression towards him! Mascher may yet stay, but his situation is the same as Stevies and he should be at least given the benefit of the doubt until he actually comes out and says what he wants to do! And by him i dont mean what his agent comes out and says because walter tamer is every bit as slimy as kia joorabchian and if there was money to be made in any potential deal then agents would be more than happy to milk the speculation in hope of a big payday!

Mascherano is the big value asset who will scrape at a minimum £25 million. His direct replacement should be Ever Banega who would cost anywhere between £10 million and £15 million that leaves at least £10 million for a left back.

According to reports Banega has a buyout clause of 8.5M Euros. Not sure he's defensive enough to be a replacement for Masher though. Plus he's mad.

True but Gerrard was even a bigger cunt about it. I mean he has history of cuntish behaviour, Chelsea after the CL 2005...

Ever Banega is the better footballer, but he is not going to be anywhere near as effective as Mascherano in breaking up play.

Before we had mascher we didn't have a mascher and we played better football. I'm not arsed about a like for like player and would rather have someone who can pass the ball a bit at the expense of not being the best tackler around.

Did I read somewhere that Purslow felt the squad was way over staffed (with too many shit playes)? He wanted to reduce this number by 16 and be left with a 23/24 man squad and then nothing but kids in the reserves.

Did I dream this?

I haven't seen this lad play but I signed him on FM a few times and he was awesome.
Stands to reason he'd be awesome in real life.

Ya but we had Momo Sissoko (granted he was a shite footballer), and before that Hamann....

We have always had a good DM. I'm afraid Lucas does not cut it. Ever Banega is not upto mark either....

I've seen Banega play a few times for Valencia last season and he was excellent every time. But he looks more like a replacement for Alonso than for Mascherano

Momo never really played the holding role though did he? From what I remember he seemed to try and break up play between their defence and midfield, rather than midfield and attack.

[/quote] But we played 4-4-2 those days. The formation we use today limits Mascherano's role to defensive dutys only.

Thank fuck for that. Have you ever seen him try to pass a ball?

I dunno, sometimes I've seen him pick a nice pass, lofted ball out to the wings and such.

I think the perhaps part of the problem was the lack of movement - if you've got people finding space then it's not so much of an issue, but when you're trying to thread the ball through the eye of a needle Stevie can do it, Xabi could do it, Mascher - err, no.

There were times (admittedly few and far between) during the ill-fated Lucas-Mascher partnership when you could see him trying to take on the more creative role and get things started, it just didn't work out that often. I think he has the (or at least some of the) vision - just not necessarily the capability.

That said, I don't think he's *quite* as bad at passing as some people make out. Certainly not that great, but not as bad as some people make out

You forgot:

1. Rafa's pay-off
2. Agents fees
3. paying up contracts of players sold without requesting a move

We also allegedly quoted some Greek team 13m or something absurd for that cunt Lucas

Although I'd take half that in a New York minute

I don't know about that Crump, we had a Didi, who was a spoiler, and we missed him when he wasn't there.

I am in the camp that we need to hear first hand what Mascher wants, to be fair he made no bones about the issue this time last year

If he wants out fair enough, we will use the money on different things, if he wants to stay I will be delighted

I don't think Maschers passing abilities are that bad either to be honest. He has his moments , but then again so does Stevie (and no that is not a direct comparison)

Two things...

1) Didi was twice the footballer Masch could ever dream of being
2) We didn't win the league with either of them.

I appreciate that's a very binary way of looking at it, but lets think back to our last DMs we won the league with.... Sometimes Molby... who could pass the ball as good as anyone on the planet, sometimes McMahon, who could wang it anywhere on the pitch from the edge of his own box... Both of whom knew were the goal was.

I got distracted from the original thread, whilst I would agree not many of the mentioned would be much missed, they still form quite a big part of our paper-thin squad, and while it would be nice to lump all the money together for one or two marquee signings, we need to increase the depth of the squad too. In other words, there is no point in selling for sellings sake, and we will still need to pay someone

regards
