How important is a keeper in regards to the other 10 on the pitch?

Begs the question really given the imminent arrival of Allison for top bunce. I mean would a top midfielder be a priority over a top keeper say for instance?

I'd argue that a top keeper is an enormous asset. Saves points, starts attacks, gives confidence to others in front of him. They also rarely get injured (at least I think that's true) Just look at how many times De Gea has bailed those scummers out of the mire. Fuck he must earn them 10-20 points a season for them.

Thoughts?

Keeper has to be more than just a keeper nowadays

Has to have outfield ability.. Act as sweeper, excellent distribution and command your back line

You get all this and of course excellent in goal you are on the road to something quite special (assuming those in front of you are class acts)

Do they? Courtois and De Gea aren't exactly Neuer-like in their speed off the line and distribution with their feet.

To answer the OP, there's obviously plenty of teams who have won stuff with perhaps not the very best goalkeeper around, but usually the team who wins the title has a 20 goal striker and a keeper who concedes very few.

When we were riding high under Rodgers, the fact we conceded 50 goals made it clear we would struggle to win the title.

A reliable, quality goalkeeper does more than just save shots - although that's a must - they instil confidence in the team and defence as a whole. We might only need to score one here and we will win. If he gets past me, the keeper will save me.

Everyone plays better with a quality goalkeeper that they trust and commands his area. And if he can also build attacks and help the team play a particular style, then all the better.

Karius and Mignolet were jittery twats, and always had a massive clanger just waiting to drop. I've never liked either of them.

What Changer?

Yes. A confident guy, a mentally strong person between the sticks who inspires confidence in his defenders would be an incredible emotional change when watching us play. Alisson does have the benefit of coming into a stronger and more organised backline than we've had for quite a while, so he has a better chance to settle, perhaps, than his predecessors. But we just need him to be able to move on immediately from the inevitable clanger and get back to performing.

I think Allison and Virgil being added to the squad might increase my lifespan. Far fewer nervy moments. More effective than any medication I know at preventing heart attacks. And I would know.

There will be a far greater correlation between goals conceded and title winners, than a 20 goal a season player and title winners. In the sense that plenty of players score 20 goals in a season and don't win jack. But title winners will always be very near - or at - the bottom of the goals conceded list.

Did you watch the champions league final?

The psychological impact of a keeper cannot be understated.

When you go into a final you just look at the team list and you see a name like:

Kahn
Schmeichel
Buffon

The sense of solidity and assurance is invaluable.

In my opinion a team should always be built from the back. In other words, starting with a good goalkeeper. So I'd say a good goalkeeper is extremely important.

I quite agree - Shame it's taken us 10 plus years to figure that out. Still it's not as obvious to some I find. Spending big on a keeper is a gamble but in this I feel this plonks us firmly in the 'we're doing things right' category.

Of course and it rankles. Playing devils advocate though that must have been a one off (given the occasion) I'm all for Karius being binned but 67mill? Ahhh who cares he must surely be an upgrade on what we have on a position we can all agree is a crucial (albeit underestimated) position.

Agreed; 67 million (seems like) crazy money for a player who has had one full season in Europe.
