If JM finds it offensive, why not just let it be and not use the term? I just don't get the need to 'argue' that, irrespective of who's 'right' or 'wrong'. It offends him, no need to use it.

While I'm against this PC invasion in our daily lives, I wouldn't use a word in front of a 'friend' or even a random person if I knew it would offend him/her. What's the point?

There is no point,

Is the world gone mad? What's happened to common sense? People are way too sensitive and get offended over rubbish.

Tbh Roland, I to a degree agree with you - but I also agree with respecting individuals and here, I feel it's a simple case of saying, "ok I don't agree but I won't say it anymore."

Would people ensure they never ever use the derogatory term - baldy

You know what , I think it's issues like this that actually perpetuate bigotry, minorities imagine issues and make barriers

but there is a difference - you aren't offended by it. if you were (and you weren't taking the piss), I'd not say it to you out of respect for you. let's be honest, what offends me won't offend you or others. What offends you won't offend me etc ...

I have to disagree slightly with you there vlad. What causes shit like that is the inability to think beyond one word sentences and come up with a different word most of the time. Ever been to the Burnley/Bolton/Darwen area? I was speaking to someone from there, and he couldn't think of a suitable word to fill the gap when refering to someone, so he used a racial insults. Not most of the time does it happen, like earlier when it clearly wasn't known to some; on the whole though people just seem to use slurs because it's the easy way of describing someone, and that the real issue that needs address.

Jap is definitely a racist term in the US, probably because of the more pacific theater oriented war, and the history of Japanese internment.

I can understand how it could function in a different way in the UK as well.

There is no point talking about what words mean, or whether they are offensive or not in absolute terms. Words have all sorts of different resonances depending on context, the perspective of the person listening, historical context blah blah blah.

It would be helpful if the ethnic minorities concerned didn't think that it is OK to use the same words among themselves in a jokey way.

1) Paki is not acceptable
2) Jap seems slightly less offensive to me
3) I know *lots* of people who say 'going for a chinky' but I also find that a bit uncomfortable

I think the whole thing about what is 'acceptable' language is so very vague and difficult to qualify, that I'm going to stop there, having been no help whatsoever

So solly!

I lived in New York while I was there and we used the term do describe Jewish American Princesses ... Ahhh yes, one of the many reasons I'm happy I left that part of the world.

Haha, yes, I'm familiar with that usage as well. Given my girlfriend is jewish and from long island, I've seen my fair share of JAPS on the Huntington bound LIRR.

Thankfully my girlfriend isn't one of them.

ha the LIRR ... sheesh ... now you're bringing back memories.

Sorry Brendan for having a discussion with Farky on the side. Have a good night and try not to worry too much about Roy. It's not good for yer heart.

Ok so back to the actual player who we should be discussing in this thread. How much would cska be looking for considering he had a good world cup?

According to Wiki he signed for them last year for around 6 million on a 4 year contract. Surely that coupled with his displays in the WC would shoot his value up to more than what we can afford at the moment.

I liked what I saw in the WC and I think he could fit nicely into our team either on the wing or in the support striker role.

I don't think he'd necessarily cost more than we could afford, but he'd probably take up the bulk of what we DO have to spend unless one or more of our top players leave.
