The God's are giving a half smile this way.... The half arsed results (top though!), a dose of Lampard Karma, France finishing second, Italy next, Greece will do Germany..... etc etc..

I know, I know. We're shite and we have Uncle Roy,

Italy vs England.

I been looking forward to a competitive fixture between the two nations for a long long time.

May Italy dive & cheat their way to victory 🙂

A look at the squads the last time they faced each other.

I thought you were compeltely outplayed by the Ukraine there to be honest. In the same way that France domianted you, and Sweden did for large parts too.

Still, you got the results I suppose. But that luck will run out soon enough.

Italy are probably a great opponent for you, cos whilst they'll completely control possession and pin you back for long periods, they don't move it quick enough to catch you out of position or to drag your solid 4-4-2 apart. You'll probably fluke another one and go through.

i'm getting that bad chelsea feeling that england might just do something here ! . But really what it shows is that the overall standard of this tournament , although entertaining , is probably down on others gone . I mean nobody has really impressed bar maybe germany and spain are just getting results like they did in the World Cup . Would be surprised if it's not one of them who wins .

Haha.... begrudging and bitter as ever! You Oirish....

I actually do think that's quite harsh. We've done what we've failed to do in previous tournaments, played within our means and our limitations, I don't think we've been fluky at all, aside from one or two chances, we limited Ukraine to pop shots from outside the box, I thought out the two sides we looked the more threatening, particularly on the break, which has been one pleasing aspect of our play - our ability to counter attack at pace and with numbers.

We could have gone there and tried to play and got knocked out straight off, by opening up to teams. Yeah, it might have been easier on the eye for the football purists, but it would have got us nowhere because we're shite at keeping hold of the ball for long periods.

As for the goal that didn't stand, shit happens, swings and rounbabouts and all that, we've had enough decisions go against us in recent years, so I don't see why we should get all apologetic about it. We topped the group deservedly.

I don't understand this notion people seem to have that playing a defensive game means you scrape what results you get. Football as ever is cyclic and after a few years of attacking football dominating, maybe it's just one of those seasons with the defensive game comes out on top. It's still a good tactical ploy that works well every now and then.

Fair play to Roy and the team for not making cunts out of themselves.

We were shite last night, we should have started with Carroll. We looked more dangerous and cohesive in attack in the last ten minutes than we did for the rest of the game. Rooney was shocking, kept trying to play little flicks and getting them completely wrong, I did love the fact that when Carroll came on he did one or two and pulled them off perfectly. Start Carroll and Rooney against Italy please, having Welbeck, Walcott and Chamberlin in reserve is a great way to change the game at the 60minute mark.

It was offside anyway, I completely agree with your assessment though.

We are playing to our strengths - the best back four in the tournament and a very disciplined two banks of four playing very deep which is difficult to play around or through. Not an easy watch though, and when will Hodgson learn that Wellbeck cannot hold the ball up or link up with anyone other than the oppos defence. Please Joe Hart stop lumping the ball upfield ceding possession, Please Ashley Young just fuck off

Italy are weird. I look at their team and I'm not that impressed by the individuals but they play well as a unit.

It often seems a mystery when England do play well in these competitions. In 1990 they were dire in the group games. They were pretty poor at the same stage in 1996 until they played Holland.

I think we could beat Italy, but we'll need luck. Especially if as expected he plays rooney, he needs at least two games to get back into his stride.

Much as I rate him, Johnson's positioning is England's biggest weakness in defence so I think the Italians will concentrate on that side & drag him out of position, as right winger is the only position Hodgson will dare change he'll probably opt for oxo cube as they'll do the same down our right.

Bearing that in mind it'll be a no exciting game than one would imagine, both sides defensively minded but attacking down opposite flanks on the counter.

There'll be a lot of aerial balls again, at both end, I just hope if it's nil nil at 60 mins roy has the cajones to replace rooney with Carroll to make the most of them.

I'm puzzled by that criticism of Johnson, which has also appeared (surprise surprise) in places in the media. He hasn't been perfect, but who has? AFAIC his defensive play in this tournament so far has been no worse than that of most other defenders on show, and better than many.

Agreed especially with the fuck wit in front of him. Parker seems to get the same treatment which amazes me - I think he has been great breaking up the opposition progress how my paper gave him the same score as Wellback - a 6 - in their ratings I really don't know. Sometimes you wonder if these pundits and journalists are watching the same game! I mean who would give Rooney the same score as Gerrard last night! who would give Young 6's and 7's for his performances.

Tony: I agree with most of what you say there (especially that the reporters giving those ratings often seem to pluck them from thin air, rather than base them on what actually happened out on the pitch) but as it happens I don't think that's particularly hard on Parker. His defensive work was fine but he looked painfully limited to me when he tried anything going forward.

Hi Judge

Yeah he's definately no world beater going forward but is putting in a massive effort defensively which, as Gerry mentioned, in turn is allowing Gerrard to be a bit more positive. He doesn't seem to get any credit for this - people have their preconceptions about players I suppose which are hard to shift. Another example is Johnson who was better than Cole last night I thought but gets alot of unfair stick imho
