Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Armenia is about the size of Belgium. Both are bigger than Wales ...and Jamaica (Raheem), but a lot smaller than Denmark and Uruguay.

The country in Europe that currently is producing some absolute gems has nearly the same population as London.
Small country or not doesnt matter, and the Armenian player of the year thing is also irrelevant.
This however isnt:
He was also voted as the best Shakhtar player of 2011–12 season by the fans. In 2012 Mkhitaryan was named in UEFA's Top 100 players by UEFA European Football Yearbook 2012-13.[1] Mkhitaryan was voted the CIS Footballer of the Year for 2012, making him the first Armenian footballer to be named the best player from post-Soviet countries.

Nor the fact that he's got 32 goals in 60 odd games from midfield. This season he's got more goals than games in the league. He's ace!

Just for your information, Armenia has roughly the same population as Uruguay - just over 3 million.

But the whole premise is silly. Across all sports there are countless great champions who were born in smaller countries. I understand Fabio meant that comment partly as a joke, but really, are we also going to make fun of Suarez being footballer of the year in Uruguay, Roger Federer being the best tennis player of Switzerland or Usain Bolt being the fastest runner in Jamaica? Let's judge players on their merits, not where they are from.

I can't name 4 Armenian players. I can name a lot more Uruguay ones they've won a world cup in the past.

My comment was a massive sarcastic one. It doesn't matter where you're from if you're good enough. But player of the year things are silly for countries without strong footballing history.

It's an award that means little unless there are 4/5 justifiable candidates.

Tbh, English player of the year would mean fuck all too because there are few English players who are much above average /fit for long periods.

A more interesting question for me is this: if the rumors are true about our serious interest in Mkhitaryan, it means Rodgers is not satisfied with his current options in central/attacking midfield and considers this area a much bigger priority than I previously thought.

It kind of makes sense if you consider that Mkhitaryan, (as well as Eriksen, with whom we've also been linked) is a midfielder who likes to run forward with the ball, and currently we don't really have anyone in our central midfield who does that on a consistent basis. Our midfield is still not dynamic enough, there is not enough forward thrust and momentum when we have the ball. A player like Mkhitaryan can potentially give us a new attacking dimension. But in that case, Allen will most likely have to compete with Gerrard for the same position... And I can see Henderson being sold to raise funds for other necessary purchases, such as shoring up the defense.

I do like how we're going after players who have massive upside, or who are on the verge of hitting their best years ... It's something we've done well recently (Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, Allen etc)

Matchday highlights focusing on the individual - CL games against more accomplished opponents like Chelsea and Juve. If I were his agent, I'd be sending takedown notices to have these clips removed immediately... He's no. 22 in these clips.

And another one, this time against Dortmund. If 15m euro is the price tag, then it's comforting to think that we might soon be that much richer after we sell Spearing.

He's miles apart from Kuyt.
Tbh I think we dont have the money to get him, as he'll cost a shitload. Eriksen will be our main target if you read todays newspapers.

Regarding Armenia, they are a 22 year old nation. Let them at least have time to develop some players before laughing at them.

His first touch looks Kuyt esque in that Dortmund vid.

You must be joking, right? There was exactly 1 time in the whole match when he lost possession because of miscontrolling the ball. There was also an episode where a ball bounced off his knee but fell kindly in his path. Hardly Kuyt-esque.

All 3 games studs posted were games Shakhtar lost. In the Borussia away game particularly, they were just annihilated, in part because the long winter break in Ukraine didn't allow Shakhtar players to match the Germans' physical condition.

For what it's worth I believe there'd be room for both Henrikh and Eriksen.

Eriksen is best suited playing in the hole behind the front players whereas I believe Henrikh is also well suited on the wing in a 4-3-3 or as the frontman.

What's interesting about these links too is that both of them placed in the top 3 over Distance Covered in the Champions League Group Stages this Season if I am not mistaken.

So besides being clever players on the ball they are also working their socks off. I can easily see why they'd attract a manager like Rodgers that wants his players to hold a high line when applying pressure.

...............................Lucas..........Gerrard..............................
Henrikh...........................Eriksen...........................Coutinho
.....................................Suarez.............................................

Add Sturridge, Allen, Sterling, Suso, Henderson, Downing to this lot and you've suddenly got a team capable of competing with the best teams around when it comes the attacking side of things.

Much in the same mould from my point of view, with Henrikh being much more dangerous in front of goal. He's got almost poacher like finishing from what I've seen.
i don't know enough about both, but i sense that dzagoev is better than him and probably better than eriksen.

Not possible, Dzagoev is from North Ossetia, which is a small autonomous republic within Russia, even smaller than Armenia. They can't possibly produce a good player.

I defer to your judgement on Eriksen, but as for Henrikh, I've only seen him play through the middle. I think like Eriksen, he needs a lot of ground to roam, so a wing position would limit him too much.
