Mahrez or Payet?

Had this debate yesterday with a couple of guys in work on who you'd choose if you had the choice between Mahrez or Payet to walk into your team right now - with money/transfer fees not relevant.

I went for Mahrez. Just. Probably not even sure why honestly, I just think there's something different about him that I haven't seen in the Premier League since Silva.

Payet is fucking quality mind you, and I got outvoted on it 3-1 in the office.

What say you folks?
I'd pick Payet - mainly because I've now seen him play magnificently for West Ham AND France.

Also with Mahrez, for as awesome as he was last season, he struggled to even get into Leicester's team a little more than a year back so there are still some question marks over him for me at least. Can he actually keep up his performances going forward? My main worry is his mentality and motivation really, without even knowing whether that's an issue or not.

PS I did not consider their age in this, but mainly who I'd feel be the better pick for us for this coming season. A bit surprised to see that so many seems in favor of Mahrez to be honest..

I think payet is a great player, but doesn't suit our style of play. He doesn't seem to be a great presser to me.

Obviously I'd take both in a heartbeat

Mahrez. Why? Coz fuck Payet that's why.

I've turned on Payet a little. I was in awe of him for parts of last season. I loved his technique and his outrageous free kicks but he now strikes me as a flat track bully. He scored 9 leagues goals last season but all came against the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland, Norwich, Palace, Everton and Bournemouth. I don't remember him shining in any big games against the so called bigger teams so I'm not sure if he can catapult West Ham further up the table. Maybe I'm wrong, I didn't watch West ham that much last season. Ayew and Antonio should have big seasons this year too.

It was much the same at the Euros, yeah he steam rolled Romania and Iceland but he went missing in the final and was substituted. It's weird because he infuriated me in the Iceland game. He scored 'n all but he kept trying the same act over and over again. He kept trying to shunt the ball onto his right when in the box. I was screaming at the tv for him to go left and mix it up but he shunted it onto his right when he got the ball five times in a row and he was crowded out. Iceland were caught out of position chasing the game and he finally got his space to shunt right and score. I don't think he'll be allowed re create that same move over and over again against better opposition unless it's due to a counter attack. It's a bit similar to Coutinho doing that fake shot of his, move it onto his right, fake shot again, shunt it on again, repeat x 1,000,000. It will be interesting to see if Payet can dominate big teams in the league this season.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to claim Payet isn't a quality player. I'm just picking out a few habits of his that frustrate me. He's also 29, compared to Mahrez, who is what 24? Another reason why I would pick Mahrez over Payet.

I remember Mahrez flying for them towards the end of the season before last? I'm not sure of the time line but I remember thinking he was quality.

I actually thought there were all sorts of issues with him in the squad and that he was almost shipped, but it's not something I am sure about.. good reasoning behind you choice of Mahrez and maybe you are right, that Payet won't show up in the big games - whenever I've seen him I've been very impressed but equally so with Mahrez - who I am just a bit more uncertain about.

Funnily enough that's the reason why I'd pick Mahrez. Payet is a very talented player but my sense of the two of them is that Mahrez is more likely to produce consistency at a high level. Payet seems to me to be more of an "all or nothing" player.

Payet if we're on about this season. Mahrez for the next few.

Someone else asked me which player I'd most like us to sign the other day and I said Mahrez, but that was just coz I'd forgot about Payet. Payet looks about to have a Suarez type season. Not that Mahrez isn't great, he is, and he's defo a player I'd love to have... it's just Payet looks about to go full batshit brilliant. Yeah I know he's 29 and last season may well have been his peak, but I dunno, I'd love him playing for us this year.

  1. I'm already married
  2. I suck at FF 🙂

My response to this is

  1. Fine - but the offer still stands for bar mitzvah's, christenings and any other event where me 'throwing shapes' is needed. On reflection it's best we leave it there....
  2. I doubt that very much. I bet anyone on here would say the same fella 😉
