Mahrez. Why? Coz fuck Payet that's why.
I've turned on Payet a little. I was in awe of him for parts of last season. I loved his technique and his outrageous free kicks but he now strikes me as a flat track bully. He scored 9 leagues goals last season but all came against the likes of Newcastle, Sunderland, Norwich, Palace, Everton and Bournemouth. I don't remember him shining in any big games against the so called bigger teams so I'm not sure if he can catapult West Ham further up the table. Maybe I'm wrong, I didn't watch West ham that much last season. Ayew and Antonio should have big seasons this year too.
It was much the same at the Euros, yeah he steam rolled Romania and Iceland but he went missing in the final and was substituted. It's weird because he infuriated me in the Iceland game. He scored 'n all but he kept trying the same act over and over again. He kept trying to shunt the ball onto his right when in the box. I was screaming at the tv for him to go left and mix it up but he shunted it onto his right when he got the ball five times in a row and he was crowded out. Iceland were caught out of position chasing the game and he finally got his space to shunt right and score. I don't think he'll be allowed re create that same move over and over again against better opposition unless it's due to a counter attack. It's a bit similar to Coutinho doing that fake shot of his, move it onto his right, fake shot again, shunt it on again, repeat x 1,000,000. It will be interesting to see if Payet can dominate big teams in the league this season.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to claim Payet isn't a quality player. I'm just picking out a few habits of his that frustrate me. He's also 29, compared to Mahrez, who is what 24? Another reason why I would pick Mahrez over Payet.
