Mahrez or Payet?

Had this debate yesterday with a couple of guys in work on who you'd choose if you had the choice between Mahrez or Payet to walk into your team right now - with money/transfer fees not relevant.

I went for Mahrez. Just. Probably not even sure why honestly, I just think there's something different about him that I haven't seen in the Premier League since Silva.

Payet is fucking quality mind you, and I got outvoted on it 3-1 in the office.

What say you folks?
 
Without ducking the question, they're both really different. Mahrez is a dribbler with wonderful close control and technique and a wand of a left foot. Payet likes to give it and go, looks for the killer pass and has pinpoint accuracy with his shots whether it be from open play or set pieces.

Given the choice I'd probably just go for Payet but Mahrez is quality too. It's a close call.

I'm with you; Mahrez by a nose. He was Messi-esque at times last season, just created goals out of nothing. Will be very interesting to see how both of them fare this season.
 
Depends what you want them for in the team? Mahrez is more tricky/unpredictable and can score/assist as well as dribble past players making them look like training cones. Payet is more of a playmaker who can also score/assist and takes crazy free kicks but I feel Mahrez has more to his game overall so therefore my votes with him.
 
I think Payet. He really shone for me in France and I have nothing more than a hunch that says Mahrez will be a one-season wonder. When the wheels finally fall off at Leicester (this season) I believe that Mahrez will look totally ordinary, whilst Payet will go on to have a solid with West Ham.

As heavily ironic as this sounds - this was more a fantasy football-esque debate than one centred around team suitability, tactics and structure.

Line them up against a wall - who are you choosing? That was about as deep as it got.
 
Mahrez for me. Amazing control. Payet is probably the better passer but Mahrez does it for me.

Are you basing it on last season or what you expect this season?

I don't see Mahrez having anywhere near as good a season while I see Payet having a brilliant one and really kicking on.

On last season it's Mahrez, for the season ahead it would be Payet.

Both very different though.

It's like picking between Mcmanaman and Le Tessier

Mahraz for me too.

It's hard to describe why as I highly rate them both, but for me. Mahraz just sees the game in a different wave length to other footballers. He seems a step ahead which when combined with excellent technique and pace allows him to do some mad skills whilst being incredibly effective. He's like a Bergkamp with pace and that excites me more than Payet.

Mahrez, because he's 5 years younger. If it was just for one season then probably Payet. Both were fantastic last season. It will be very interesting to see if they can maintain that.
 
Yeah Mahrez, I think you can maybe argue that Payet is more direct and decisive, but I like the slight unpredictability of Mahrez and the fact he has time on his side to become even better.

Imagine having both.
 
An irishman, two Englishman, and 1 Australian who probably knows more about the game than 90% of this site.

Although that last bit's not really an indictment of any great football knowledge.
 
I would have answered Mahrez anyway but he's also 4/5 years younger. Is there more than a couple of seasons in Payet?

Obviously either could turn to shit tomorrow and never get back to form, making age irrelevant.
