MALAYSIAN FOOTBALL ON THE RISE, SAYS MINISTER AFTER WATCHING TWO FRIENDLY MATCHES

KUCHING, July 23 — Malaysia’s encouraging performance in two friendly matches against English Premier League (EPL) champions Manchester United shows that it is on the road to recovery.

Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the gutsy display by the Malaysian team drew respect from the FIFA Club World Cup 2008 champions.

“Malaysian football has become well-known globally, thanks to coverage by international newspapers and Youtube. I see new hope for the national football team,†he told reporters after opening the 18th Kobe Osaka International Karate World Cup 2009 here today.

Malaysia lost 2-3 to Manchester United in the first match on Saturday at National Stadium, Bukit Jalil.

The ‘Red Devils’ had to work hard for the win after Amri Yahyah rattled them with two goals.

However, K. Rajagobal’s boys could not reproduce a similar display, going down 0-2 in the second match.

“I’m very impressed with our performance in the first match. Congratulation to the national team for scoring two goals.

“As for the second match, the issue was fitness. I hope this will be looked into as we build a strong team.â€

Meanwhile, Shabery said Malaysia will step up efforts to win the country’s first gold medal at the London Olympic Games 2012 with focus on archery, badminton and cycling.

“Archery and badminton are our best hope for gold at London 2012,†he added. – Bernama

This bloke surely is even worse off than the fellas at FIFA. Utd are'nt the same team they were the last time they came here.

Very funny.... Humm

When you live in a country ranked 157th on the football list, it's amusing how many false dawns keep creeping up and yet the same people keep falling for it EACH time!

Are you malaysian?
yes. why?

A bit strange.. Your crappy footie team did well against Man Utd, which clearly made that patriotic guy proud..

Why the laugh? I mean it's not everyday you get to play against the best of the world, let alone score a couple of goals, may as well let them enjoy it..

HAHAHAHAHA, we on the rise????? ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think this team cant even beat Philippines. ;D ;D

Just see how they perform in the SEA game, can get a bronze is consider on the rise. ;D ;D

I also think that Thailand Prime Minister should tell the world that they already reach the "world class" standard as they held the mighty Liverpool in last night FRIENDLY match. ;D ;D

Mate, we just got lucky. Utd don't have Tevez and Ronaldo anymore, Giggs and Scholes are almost as old as Fergie. I mean, just how may run-outs did the Utd players get even before they flew down? It is by no means a benchmark, we always fall flat on our arses everytime we face the likes of Thailand and Indonesia, even Singapore have a decent record against us in lifting cups recently!

Go Lions!

I'm half Singaporean (my mum is still a citizen and all ehr family are still there) and I personally love taking the piss off the other team everytime ;p

I'm actually very glad we managed to play reasonably well against the Scum.

It made for a more exciting match, unfortunately the same couldnt be said for last night's game.

The reason why some Malaysians are a bit unimpressed about it is because success in sports is very political.

If we do well, whichever idiot Minister who's in charge of national sports will take the credit for it.

If we're shit, as we often are, it's the coach's fault.
