Goodness gracious me!

Very few things are more satisfying than a Riise thunderbolt. Only Alan Smith would disagree.

That's what I remember him for. The Norwegian ginger cunt (there's some more xenophobia for ya).
Use your fucking right foot!!!

Love a Riise goal and I miss screamers like this a lot, Jhon Duran seems like the only one trying to bring them back

That was a tragic end for him, he was mostly pretty good but when that happened it felt like the end. Probably just shite memory but it felt like he never recovered from that.

It was the end for him with Rafa, that's for sure. I think Rafa was flipping through that notebook of his for agents' numbers before full-time

I listened to the first part of a 2 part interview with Rafa on a podcast called It Was What It Was. They cover some good football history.

When they asked him about his first 2 proper jobs in Spain and suggested he failed he was very quick to point out about all the reasons and circumstances that stacked up against him. He did have a point, but to me it seemed like a flaw he has. He can't accept that maybe he could have done things differently. It was always down to outside factors.

It was the same on the Overlap discussing his time in Liverpool. There was no admission or reflection that anything could have been done differently. The most you ever get from Rafa is an explanation of the decisions. It's definitely one of his flaws.

Riise problem was always the fact that he was stuck between two positions, left back and left midfield, and neither position suited him "perfectly" (for lack of a better word) .
He would have been great as a left wing back but we played with a back four in either a 4-4-2 system or a 4-3-3 system mostly so he was moved around a bit.

I don't know if inconsistent is the right word to use to describe him because he was mostly good, but I guess he wasn't consistent enough to hold down one position.

Anyway, he messed up badly in that CL semi which would have led us to a finals match up against Man U.

Imagine beating Man U in the final, we would have been favorites.

You couldn't help liking Johnny Rockets for his commitment and for the occasional thunderous goal, but sorry - I didn't rate him that highly at fullback and neither did a number of our opponents, who regularly targeted him (or more precisely the space he used to leave behind him) as a weakness in our line-up. He had the good luck to play outside one of our best ever CBs in big Sami who frequently had to pull JAR's chestnuts out of the fire. I'll never badmouth a club stalwart like him but IMO history sometimes tends to get rewritten in his favour.

Where did he disappear to though. I last saw him a number of years back working on Astro which was Malaysia's football network and thought it was an odd place for him to be. Haven't seen him on the telly ever since.

I think he tried to manage in women’s footy then jibbed it to be a cross country skier.
