Goodbye Harvey?

Right… so we’re selling Kelleher, Gomez, Robbo, Tsimikas, Quansah, Endo, Elliot, Nunez, Morton, Doak, Badger and Chiesa, plus we’re letting Salah, Trent & Virgil leave on frees….. aaaaaand Diaz hasn’t been offered a new contract yet.

Well… the crazies are going to be happy at all the players we’re going to need to sign.

By my reckoning, it’s a good job we signed that keeper in the summer, because that’s the only position we aren’t going to have to buy for.
Haha !

Red = Gone. Blue = question mark.

Kelleher, Gone in the Summer
Gomez, STAYS - Slot clearly loves him
Robbo, STAYS - Slot clearly loves him but back up only.
Tsimikas, STAYS. Proviso - unless we sign a class replacement as our 1st team starter. Not sure that will happen in the Summer but I pray it does.
Quansah, STAYS
Endo, Stays - good squad player and Slot will use him. Proviso - if we get Touch then he's gone.
Elliott. Gone in the Summer
Nunez. Gone in the Summer
Morton LOAN
Doak. LOAN
Badger. LOAN
Chiesa - I'm not so sure, unlike lots of you, that he will depart. Proviso - unless we get a young Mo. replacement to eventually usurp him (2 years).
Salah. Obviously STAYS
Trent. - 50/50
Virgil. Obviously STAYS

I reckon you’ve got Endo & Harvey the wrong way round - Endo’s going and Harvey’s starying.

The rest I’d probably agree with.

Not sure Harvey is good enough to start for us in the future so not surprised.
Decent fee and sell on/buy back clause.

It's so galling to see people say Harvey's not good enough for us. The lad runs through walls for us. The lad plays well with Salah. He's creative and slowly developing in to a goal threat.

I'll be absolutely devastated if he left. I don't quite get what slot wants that Elliott can't offer. If it's as simple as "duels" then I'm gutted.

4 goals in 46 games in 22/23, and 5 goals in 53 games in 23/24 is a goal threat?

Szobo is 3yrs older and a fully fledged international who has played regularly in Europe and has one extra goal across the last two seasons playing regularly for a side fighting for the title. Curtis Jones has 8 across the past two seasons. Both play a similar role and figure more prominently.

If the expectation for that role is "goal threat" his stats are hardly below expectations or the relative norm.

This would be a fucking nightmare. We've invested so much into his development. At the end of last season he was one of our best players. I think his 'one footedness' is only an issue when he's playing up around Mo - but its not really that much of an issue.

Maybe Slot just doesn't think he can play in the same way Szobs or Jones can - but equally he hasn't given him a go. His pressing and work rate is exceptional, good ball striking, good vision. He will thrive if we sell him, and it would hurt to watch.

Yeah, but lets be honest. Harvey can't do what Szobo does. If there is one player we've learnt over the last two games is essential for the way we play, its Szobo.

Playing Elliott instead of Jones against Spurs I can agree with.

Szobo has been in good form recently and was when he joined, but he's not essential to the way we play and he spent almost a year being pretty mediocre, we're just missing him because he was in form and Jones clearly isn't. There were plenty of times when Jones stepped in previously and did the same or a better job, and I don't think he's a better player on paper than Szobo.

I'd consider selling Jones instead in all honesty. Jones can play in more positions though. Harvey isnt a winger, cant play in midfield but will could excel in the 10 role.

No, he's essential and has been all season. For some reason a very underrated player. God knows why.

I would be disappointed if Elliott were to leave. You can see the improvement in him over the last few years and he's still young.

I think he has been unlucky this season, and I wouldn't be entirely sure that Slot doesn't rate him.

At the start of the season, one might have said the same similar about Jones, yet he has forced his way in. It's not a huge stretch to say that Elliott may have done the same had he not been injured.

No way - another player we have invested in. He has some frustrating flaws but his output when we need it is valuable. The real gaps in our team are at the back. If we were even more rock solid at FB/CB/DM then we would need less scrutiny on our forwards & AM.

Our goals conceded is on the same level as Arsenal, Forest, Newcastle. Our goals scored is 20% better than the next best.

so you're expecting a 20 year old, who for the most part played the last 10 minutes of games to be putting up great numbers?

be realistic. You'll notice how i said "developing"

Harvey has been the same player for the last 3 years, as has Jones. It's evident their ceiling is limited.

Move both on if the money is right and sign some actual stars that can take us to the next level.

because hes henderson. All running and harrying. its only the last few games he started to look a more consistent threat

The boy is a better passer than both Jones and Szobo and it’s not even close.

Real shame that Slot hasn’t given him the game time

A lot of the criticism of our transfer policy is around not signing, e.g., Caicedo or Joao Pedro when they went to Brighton, instead waiting and bidding big numbers later on. Harvey is the other side of that coin. We did sign him, but his development with us isn’t what it would have been at Brighton or a similar club. And now there is speculation he’ll be off, and in part that’s because he probably isn’t the kind of player Slot is looking for. But in another world, he goes to Brighton (or stays at Fulham) and plays every week and becomes a world-beater. We’re now ready to bid £60m+ for him and he is desperate to sign because he’s a fan.
There are players who get time and don’t deserve it. If Harvey goes, and I hope to God he doesn’t, he’ll be a player who deserved time and didn’t get it.
That’s the dilemma. That’s why, unless a kid is exceptional and ready to go straight away (e.g. Trent) we incline to let them develop and pay the premium for a finished article.

The problem with Elliott is he's good, but he's not good enough to compromise a manager's style of play, and most will prefer more physical, athletic players in the middle.

I'd like to see Elliott be given games to prove himself, though. When on form, what he brings on the ball more than outweighs his weaknesses off it. He's come back from a long lay off and the side has performed superbly in his absence, so he's having a tough and unfortunate . He doesn't deserve writing off fully, but if we accept that we in a one in, one out position then Elliott has to be a contender for an outgoing.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot on Harvey Elliott's return to first-team action: "He's a talented player. He's been with us for so long. In recent weeks, he comes in quite a lot and gets his minutes, but like it is for him and many others, he's in competition with the other good players.

"He was very unlucky, I think after two games, he got injured, was out for a long time and what I've seen now with almost all of our players that have been out for quite a while that in this league - with the tempo, intensity and the quality we have, the other teams as well - it is not so easy to come back and be at your best immediately.

"That is the balance we have to find, to give them playing time to get to their best level, but still be able to win every game. "

Thats the risk with young players though. He could also end up like Carvalho when he got sold to Brentford.
Its also about being ready to step in and perform when given the chance like Bradley and Quansah.

I'm not particularly keen on selling a 21 year old kid who might develop into a starter either, but Slot doesnt seem to fancy him so far. He wasn't much involved before his injury either.
It was a bit telling when he didn't start in the 10 role against Spurs. I was certain he would but Slot opted for Jones (who was terrible).

Hopefully Elliott gets his chance during the second half of the season, starting with the game tomorrow, but if he can't force his way into more opportunities by performances in training or games then a sale might be on the cards.

We've invested so much into his development.

he’ll be a player who deserved time and didn’t get it

I'm tempted to say "which one is it then?". But if we want to be a little more nuanced about it then it's a question of ROI and timing.

It's easy to forget how young Elliot still is because he's been here so long. I just checked on Wiki and he's been here for 5 years (fuck!) and has had 81 appearances. We have invested in his development and he's been given a lot of opportunities.

He's worked hard, done well out on loan and always looks to take his chances when he comes on so it's hard - from the outside looking in - to fault him on anything. That being said, what's his route into the team? There doesn't seem to be one other than a bit part squad player right now and that's the problem.

If I was him, I'd definitely be reassessing at the end of the season. He's approaching a key point in his career.

A Real style sale with buy-back clause would probably work well for all parties.

I hope he gets a chance in the Mac Allister role tomorrow. I think in a Slot team that is going to be his best position. He doesn't have all the attributes of Mac Allister but he does have an eye for a pass.
I also hope that we're all just over-reacting to a bit of 2+2=5 bullshit from a journo with nothing else to write about.
