The Football Association has confirmed no further action will be taken against Wayne Rooney following the Manchester United striker's elbow on James McCarthy at the weekend.

Rooney caught the Wigan Athletic midfielder on the side of the head during the early stages of United's 4-0 win at the DW Stadium.

Referee Mark Clattenburg awarded a free-kick at the time and opted against either booking Rooney or showing the England international the red card.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez was unhappy after the game and was insistent that Rooney should have been sent off by Clattenburg.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, suggested there was 'nothing in it' and was bracing himself for a media storm to be created.

The FA had been waiting to receive Clattenburg's report on the incident before deciding whether video evidence could be used to charge Rooney with violent conduct.

However, it would appear that Clattenburg's explanation of the challenge has left the FA with no scope to act retrospectively within the current rules.

It means that Rooney, who scored United's third goal at Wigan, will be available for the Premier League leaders' trip to reigning champions Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Didn't Ryan Babel get banned for posting a comedic picture on a social networking site?

Corrupt fucking cunts.

Batternburg "feels he took the appropriate action".

Fucking Lenny Bennett baked bean perm-having wanker.

"@henrywinter: So long, farewell, goodbye to the FA Respect campaign. Where's the Respect when one pro elbows another and the FA does nothing? #owngoal"

Disappointed in Clattenburg actually. He used to be better than this.

Not that it's a surprise, especially with Mike Riley in charge of referees these days.

babel - posts picture of a ref in a manu shirt

result - fine

rooney - elbows player in the face

result - nothing

well, at least the fa have their priorities straight.

It's not really FA's fault this time though is it? Clattenburg clearly bottled it. He was going to take shit from somewhere regardless but was more afraid of Fergie's reaction so instead of doing the right thing he did what he thinks is easier for him. I hope they at least wont let him ref any more games this season.

Bottled it or followed instructions?

And if you ban him for that you pretty soon won't have any refs left, because they're all at it big-time this season to give Ginsoak no.19.

From March 2010:

Rough justice: Ferguson accuses FA of going easy on Liverpool

?James Ducker, Northern Football Correspondent ?

Sir Alex Ferguson has stoked the fires before his team’s Barclays Premier League game against Liverpool at Old Trafford tomorrow by accusing the FA of giving the Merseyside club preferential treatment.

The Manchester United manager is furious that Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano, the Liverpool midfield players, escaped disciplinary action this season over incidents similar to the one that earned Rio Ferdinand, the United defender, a four-match ban for violent conduct.

“They [Liverpool] do all right,†Ferguson said, witheringly, of the FA’s decision not to charge Gerrard or Mascherano. “They are lucky like that. Maybe one day we will get lucky.â€

He also said that he was not surprised to see Liverpool struggling after claiming they “overperformed†last season and expressed little sympathy with the plight of Rafael Benítez, their manager, who said he was no longer on talking terms with the Scot after their public feud during the past campaign.

Ferguson has called for an urgent overhaul of the FA’s disciplinary unit after openly questioning its integrity and dismissing the governing body as “dysfunctionalâ€.

Ferdinand was suspended after striking Craig Fagan, the Hull City forward, during a league match in January. Four months earlier, Mascherano avoided punishment for appearing to strike Jermaine Beckford, the Leeds United forward, in similar circumstances during a Carling Cup third-round tie at Elland Road.

The FA could not take action against Gerrard for catching Michael Brown, the Portsmouth midfield player, with his forearm during Liverpool’s 4-1 win at Anfield on Monday because Stuart Attwell, the referee, said he had seen the incident and deemed it sufficient only to award a free kick to the away team. Ferguson, though, seemed unconvinced.

“He saw the elbow?†Ferguson said, disbelievingly. “You see, it goes on and on and on. I didn’t expect them to charge Gerrard simply because it’s a dysfunctional unit, the FA.

“I don’t think they know what they are doing. There is no consistency for a start, so you can’t expect to get consistency and I never expect any. So I’m not too bothered about it, to be honest with you. They’ll do what they want down there. It’s crazy at times.

“But I certainly think if it was a Manchester United player, he would have been done, as was the case with Rio Ferdinand. There is nothing you can do about it. You just scratch your head at some of the decisions they take and wonder how they came to them.

Happy now, fanny face ?

The system needs changing because it's a loophole that's there to be manipulated and often is. If the FA take action regarding him refereeing games then they're questioning his position anyway, so why should there be a scenario where the ref's report makes players/clubs immune to action after the event?

It's just a copout for the FA and referees.

Quite agree. Mark's absolutely right - it's a copout for the authorities to save them as much work and unpleasantness as poss.

FA bosses will stun football next month by launching a long-awaited fightback against Premier League clubs that sabotage the England team.

An epidemic of player withdrawals from England sides this week convinced FA officials that enough was enough.

They are now so fed up with England teams being undermined, they are ready to declare war on clubs who try to cheat the system.

Starting from the next international date, they will ban players who fail to report for England duty from playing for their club the following weekend.

They were ready to make an example of Newcastle striker Nile Ranger this weekend after he pulled out of Wednesday's England Under-20 match against France without first being checked over by FA medical staff.

Ranger was to be banned from playing against Blackburn tomorrow, but they were forced to postpone the action when they realised Manchester United defender Chris Smalling had been allowed to cry off Under-21 duty without reporting to England.

FIFA rules give the FA the power to prevent a player whose injury has not been verified by England medical staff from playing for his club for five days after an international fixture.

Until now, the FA has not enforced the rule as a gesture of goodwill towards clubs but 22 withdrawals from the full England side and the Under-21s, Under-20s and Under-19s has forced them to act.

McCarthy on Rooney's elbow...

"It felt like a bean bag."

Durham on Talksport is arguing that Rooney did nothing wrong.

He was just trying to get by MacCarthy.

I doubt it will happen, but I really hope that either a few players tell them to fuck off and withdraw from contention, or the clubs band together and do the same saying that it is their investmant and they will protect it if they feel the need. The pricks are really getting my back up of late, it's all about lining their coffers.

+ a million.

Durham doesn't actually believe anything he says. It's just to stir the pot and get callers. Sad.
