Goldfish

My son wants a goldfish for his birthday. just got the tank and we need to go back in a week with a sample of the water to see if its ok for the fish, very professional.

Mates have given me some horror stories of goldfish lasting a week or so, apparently the world record is 49 years.

So, anyone got any tips on keeping goldfish apart from the obvious like clean the tank
