Go Gomez

More rumors of him being off to Villa.

Is there much point in keeping him?

There doesn't seem to be much chance of him getting above 4th choice, and keeping Philips til the summer is not the worst thing we could do.

For 30 mil I'd sell for sure
I'd sell, though he has a higher ceiling than Nat, the guy gets injured far too often and has too many off days when compared to Nat. It's fucking jarring we have to sell to buy, or may be the £20-£30m will be used to keep Salah?

This one goes round & round. A little over 12 months ago he was lauded as being our best defender not called Virgil, and he carried the defence in Virgil's absence until he got injured himself. At the moment he is being kept out by the unnatural "alivedness" and form of Matip, and his own injuries again. I really don't think Klopp has a 1,2,3,4 rating of our CBs, he has 1 (Virgil) and then the rest, depending on the match and fitness. Gomez could well be his main partner next season

Gomez will be injured for prolonged periods next season.

We have 5 CBs so one is going. Matip, VVD and Konate are staying so that leaves Gomez and Phillips. Currently Gomez wins as the more versatile and better fit to our style of play

His contract apparently expires in 2024. Last season, he played 448 mins of football in all competitions for us and this season, it's 440 mins. He turns 25 in May. If the price is right, we should definitely sell.

[article]Signed more than six years ago, that the 24-year-old has made only 131 appearances highlights the major injury problems that restricted him to just 10 outings in his first two seasons, and the ruptured patella tendon suffered in November 2020 just at the moment Gomez was stepping into the role of chief centre-back in the absence of the injured Van Dijk and Joel Matip.[/article]

[article]Gomez has made a mere 10 outings this season, only four of which have been as a starter. The last time he began a game alongside Van Dijk? The infamous 7-2 thrashing at Aston Villa early last term.

Rumours of interest from Real Madrid have gone quiet since first being aired last month, leaving the player to concentrate on winning back his place at Anfield.[/article]

It's sad, but necessary. I think he's the driving force in this and it's not just about losing his place and basically becoming 4th choice, it's also about not even being in contention for England. It's a world cup year and he wants to stake a claim.
BUT, is Villa actually the best option?
Konsa and Mings are a solid pair. Isn't Newcastle a better option?

If we need to sell-to-buy he’s one of our few non-starting players who could command a fee. klopp clearly doesn’t rate him so why not sell and get in a trusted 4th choice & invest elsewhere

Klopp doesn't rate him?

If Gomez wants to go then we should sell. I'd be happy keeping Phillips and releasing Gomez for £25M-£30M.

Phillips has everything you need in a fourth choice CB.

Mings? He’s fucking shite. He’s like the English Lovren but worse.

I don't rate Mings. Never have.
They (Villa) rate him though and you're exaggerating a little. Just saying that it's going to be pretty hard for Gomez to go there and just oust one of them.

Yeah, watching Mings against Everton really brought home to me how flawed he is as a defender - crumbles under any bit of sustained pressure and makes one rash decision after another. He does have his strong qualities, but if Villa are serious about challenging for European places, they need better (and calmer) defenders. I think Gomez at his best would be a definite upgrade.

I’m not modo. He’s terrible. Gomez would walk in to that team. Then do his cruciates in.

Oh don't get me wrong. Gomez at his best owns Mings and Konsa. But we really don't know where he is form-wise right now. Come to think of it, that's Villa's problem.

Gomez might in some senses be our most saleable asset realistically. If we get 30 million for him, would definitely be tempted to sell him.

Though I don't think there's really been any credible link to Villa yet. Might change in the summer of course.

That said, if we sell Phillips this Jan and then also sell Gomez in the summer, we'd again be pretty short at CB.

If it's the case we have to sell to keep Mo, that's a terrible indictment of FSG.
Yeah, I know but it is what it is.

Funds aside though, Phillips has consistently been the better player over the past 2 seasons. He is always fit, he doesn't hide and he is a threat on set pieces.

The trajectory in their respective performances is clear to see.

I think many of us were pleasantly surprised Nat had another level. At least I was. He was playing in those games we had to win and he didn't let anyone down. He was one of the best players on the field in fact.

If Klopp had trusted him earlier, we wouldn't have Hendo or Fab getting themselves injured playing in CB, and we would have been more competitive in the league.

In that regards I do feel for Nat slightly. I think he deserves better than to be discarded straight away once Gomez got fit.

At his best, he's worth far more than 30M. The question is whether he can get back to it and ever stay injury free.

We'll probably have to spend most, if not all, the money we get from his sale as a replacement unless we trust Nat Phillips to step up (which I don't think Klopp does).

It's a really difficult situation for us. On the one hand, we need younger players and we need more English players so getting rid of Gomez doesn't make sense. On the other hand, we really need to do something about the number of injury prone players in the squad.

And it's all exacerbated by the fact that we refuse to spend any money so we're constantly walking a tightrope.

I think ultimately it'll be decided by the player himself.

If he’s our third or fourth choice he’s pointless, because a bit like Div or Keita, what good is depth when they aren’t available when called upon?

That’s why Nat is the better option for depth but we all know Klopp doesn’t really fancy him for his high line. I can see them both leaving in the next two windows.

Sell him this summer. Hopefully a bidding war between Villa, Newcastle and maybe West Ham.
