Lucas wants new contract
Brazil international hopes to stay beyond the summer

Last updated: 9th March 2011

Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva believes he has done enough to deserve a new contract at Anfield.

The Brazil international will enter the final year of his current deal at the end of the season and there have yet to be any discussions regarding an extension.

Lucas has shown significant improvement this campaign, despite almost being sold by Roy Hodgson last summer, and he has remained a part of Kenny Dalglish's plans since January.

The 24-year-old accepts that club owners, the Fenway Sports Group, and Dalglish, if he is offered a long-term contract, are likely to make summer changes to Liverpool's squad as they continue their rebuilding process.

But Lucas hopes that he is not a player who is moved on, as he told the Liverpool Daily Post: "Always in the summer a few players will go and a few players will come, so we have to wait and see. We want to finish this season well.

"I hope to be one of those that stays in the summer. Why not? I still have one year left on my contract after this season so I have a commitment with the club, and I'm doing everything to show I am capable to be here.

"There haven't been any talks over a new deal. I'm just looking at finishing this season. This season has been very good for me, and I just want to keep that going.

"I only have to convince two people - Dalglish and the Brazil national team manager. I just have to keep going."

------------

He has upped his level this season and I think he can only get better, I mean he just turned 24.
Lucas deserves a new contract. (Never thought I'd say/write it).

He absolutely raped utd and Chelsea this season but in turn been done over by the whack teams where he's gone missing.

Regardless of this I'm a Lucas fan, he comes across as a nice bloke who genuinely wants to play football for this club.

He's proven to an extent that when played in certain sysytemz and positions that he can play football too.

I'd be happy for him to be handed a new four year contract.

We need a squad, be could be part of that.

Also be keeps brazil tickin over a treat on FIFA.

Though since the most recent update I'm fairly sure he's not in the starting 11.

Never ever thought I'd say this but, at the right price, we should definitely keep him. He's a worthy back-up and brings his A-game against top level opposition. He's earned it.

I am not a huge fan, he is what he is an average midfielder, but we need people like Lucas in the squad. He has certainly improved and if we could get this giving stupid fouls away in even more stupid places out of his system that would improve him even more.

regards

i thought he was really good at the weekend, he is learning to cut out the silly passes and his tackling/robbing of the ball is class

I am quite happy with Lucas in my CM, was Masher really miles better than Lucas has been this season (I know I never rated Masher)

He's gone.
Gone baby gone.

should we just make a sticky saying "Brendan is banned"? Every other fucking day someone asks where he is!

Not sure after the summer signings if Lucas will have a future with us, but it makes sense to give him an extension to protect his market value. He is improving and is a Brazil international so if we cash in, at least we'll get some decent money.

He needs us way more than we need him. If he's willing to be paid as a backup player then I'd consider it.

If we were to sell him what clubs would be interested?

Exactly Roland at the very least we need to protect his value.

I'd far prefer extending it with a view to Lucas competing against whoever is bought in a s then playing out of merit rather than necessity.

He's been linked with la liga sides enough and I said last summer I think he could tear up the Spanish league in a more advanced role

Are we protecting value or saddling ourselves with him by offering an extension?

Depends on your point of view I suppose

I would grudgingly accept him being offered a new contract if he was seen as a peripheral squad player who was selected for League Cup & other seemingly less important games.

Ideally though, if we were offered £6m+ for him we should accept IMMEDIATELY.

It may come as a shock to some, but there's interest from Villareal and the likes of Napoli and Fiorentina. Obviously, this is purely speculative.

Rosco, I get that you don't like Lucas and frankly neither do I, but he has earned his place in the team. It doesn't help that we have players like Poulsen as competition for him but Kenny is making the best of what we have and until we get better players, Lucas will do.

There is nothing in any shape or form that Lucas can ever 'tear' up. Ross has it right. If he were to leave, he wouldn't attract interest from anyone other than mid-table Italian or Spanish teams.

Even though I've never really had it in for him like others, and think he can be a pretty effective player on his day, I'd say its fairly clear that hes not consistently dominating enough in either a defensive or offensive sense to be a regular first-teamer.

Keep him as a squaddie, CMs who start on the bench usually get a fair run of games through the season anyway. In my mind we need either a dominating defensive type in his position, or a deep lying playmaker who adds value to our build-up play. Lucas does a bit of both, but neither to the consistently required extent in this league.

i think he could still develop into a good player for us. i'd much rather just keep him for a few more years. we'll prob make a profit anyways if he keeps improving

Why does anyone even care?

Despite the fact that he's shown signs of improvement this season, i'd still be gutted to see him as a regular 1st team player next season.

I'd probably give him a new contract (if he's not asking for silly money), due to the fact that we should be building up our squad this summer.

He would benefit from the slower tempo of the Spanish league and could be a very good player there especially if, as Hardcastle says, he is given a more advanced role. He won't ever make it big time in England, he just is the wrong kind of player for this league, but the experience gained would allow him to thrive in Spain. Selling him for a decent fee might be the best option for all parties involved. The biggest teams won't be interested but someone like Villarreal, Atletico etc. could well be.

Offering him a new contract should be a no brainer if his wage demands are sensible.

I agree.

Lucas, Maxi and Kuyt are 3 first team players we must improve on in the starting XI. No doubt that they would make good squaddies. However, while Lucas would probably thrive in Serie A or La Liga because of the tempo of the game there, I would opt to sell Poulsen and a few peripheral players first. I would rather have a smaller high quality squad than a bigger squad with less quality.

yup i agree. Any positions where we become short in (through injuries etc) then we can promote youth members. i'd rather have solid backups and a class first team, even if it is a little on short squad size

That was largely our problem under Rafa. He prioritised quantity over quality!

I agree but I'm starting to think that Maxi isn't even a good sub.

Despite Johnson being a revelation at left back we need a new one and it needs to be addressed this summer.
Other players in the starting line up that can be improved upon is like you mentioned Lucas and Kuyt. With Carroll fit Maxi shouldn't be starting.
Other than that we need a new defender.

GARY CAHILL.
