“My groin is tested when I’m working and the physios collect data. My groin scores now are better than before I even started feeling my groin.

“My groin has been fixed and is as strong as ever. What I’ve done over the past four weeks tells me that’s the case and I’ve got total confidence in it.

Erm they have groin scores now ?!

How on earth do you test your groin ???
I know a pretty reliable way...

I've no idea what Kenny's plans are for Gerrard, but yeah, I do think he could feature on the right at times, especially if Kuyt keeps playing well upfront.

I suspect Gerrard, Henderson and Downing will all have very flexible, interchanging roles this year, with Lucas and Adam maintaining some sort of shape in the middle.

I hope KK plays him in a free role on the right.
What's that?

with glenjo behind him???
hell no!

Nah, what I meant is how can it be a free role if he's playing on the right, it's a bit like saying you can do what you like as long as it's on the right. I'm not taking the piss I genuinely just want to now what Kopking meant.

I know what you meant and I know what Kopking meant as well.
I think he's thinking of Gerrard during the 2005/06 season or 06/07 when he played on the right with Sissoko and Alonso in the middle.
Scored about 20 goals, great season for him but....
He had a certain Steve Finnan behind him or Arbeloa.
Much better defensively than Johnson. You can't have Gerrard occupying the right with a free role while having Johnson at the back.
He's too much of a liability.
No Gerrard should play CM or AM. Preferably AM.

Perhaps he means in a system where Gerrard, Downing and Suarez (plus Adam, Kuyt and Henderson - depending on who is playing) regularly interchange with one another. Downing and Suarez do that already and Gerrard has frequently done so in the past. In other words, the only 'fixed' position in front of the defence is the holding midfield player. Perhaps.

it's gonna be carroll or suarez ahead of him i reckon. i can easily see carroll being benched for two thirds of our games once gerrard is back.
This (I hope0

I reckon he'll be playing in central midfield.

Can't wait to have him back. Nice that we're doing alright, so it ought to be a pleasure for him to play.

I think you're right Red Mullet.
Can I have a try? As I understand the term, a free role on the right would mean the player popping up anywhere up or down the right-hand side of the pitch, in attack or defence as needed, a bit like the old wing-half position.

...which would still be a bad idea, especially if Magic is our RB.

Yeah i tend to agree.

I'm also looking forward to the day that we get to see the following line up together in the middle:

Hendo--Stevie--Adam

It means when the opposition have the ball, he's on the right to defend, but when we have the ball he can go wherever the fuck he wants.

I'm not completely averse to the idea of him on the right - he's certainly been incredibly effective there in the past, and it's not like taking him out of the middle now leaves us with a gaping hole in terms of able replacements.

Obviously they won't be as good as him, but then how many positions on the pitch is that true of? Bar Suarez and Reina he could probably replace most of the lads and do a better job than them.

Only thing is he was pretty fed up out there in the past wasn't he? Dunno if he'd play with that much enthusiasm, but he seems much more mature about things now

I dont think its humanly possible to better the best of Gerrard....

Therefore i think he is telling porkies....

It's well known he asked to play back in the centre, but as you say he's more mature now.

I think he'd be ok with it now.

You see that doesn't really work for me. I get the idea but it's a bit useless if the first thing your players have to do when they lose the ball is return to another part of the pitch to defend. By the time they all get back where they belong, the other team has scored. They don't wait for five or six seconds for Gerrard and Downing and whoever else to get back into the position they're supposed to be in to defend.

So you think all attacking players should stay in the same position all the time? I don't think what I'm describing is unusual or new. It happens all the time.

Gerrard will be played through the centre and Henderson will be the odd man out with Suarez moving to the right and Downing on the left. On occassion, Carroll will be swopped out with Kuyt.

Kenny has plenty of options tactically compared to a year ago.

The key word there is "options". I wouldn't at all be surprised if most of those players, with the exception of Carroll, play in more than one position over the course of the season.

still think it'll vary week by week, but stevie will be in the squad. some games it'll be 4-4-2 with SG next to lucas, other games itll be SG ahead of lucas and CA in a 4-5-1. Henderson and adam will be the main casualties

then again, i'm still skeptical gerrard will play that much without being injured again but hey ho

I'd rather adam made way than henderson

imho this;
henderson-----lucas----gerrard----downing

is better than this;
gerrard-----lucas----adam-----downing

but neil....

lucas adam
gerrard
suarez/kuyt downing
Carroll/suarez

is better than the 4-4-2.

I reckon itll be both when SG comes back

basically I ant to see henderson and downing on the flanks, I don't care what the formation is as long as that happens, that way you get quality service from wide positions and the emphasis is on width rather than hoping for a miracle from gerrard or suarez to win the game which will make us less predictable. hendernson and downing on the flanks, gerrard through the middle and then suarez + 1 up front.
