Gerrard and Torres staying at Liverpool - Hodgson

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has declared the club are not going to sell captain Steven Gerrard and Spanish international striker Fernando Torres.

Hodgson has held talks with duo and said: "Steven Gerrard is not for sale - I made that clear to him."

On Torres, he added: "He is not for sale and we don't welcome any offers for him. We want to keep him."

However, Hodgson has tried without success to contact midfielder Javier Mascherano to discuss his future.

"I have left him voice messages and sent him texts but had no reply," said the new Anfield boss.

"To be fair to him, that's not unusual because he's had a tough World Cup and I believe he's gone back to Argentina.

"It's not always easy to get in touch with people. I have tried to reach him to make clear I am happy to talk with him at his convenience."

Torres picked up a thigh injury in his country's World Cup final win over Netherlands on 11 July and is expected to be out for about three weeks.

Hodgson met with him ahead of the 26-year-old, who has been linked with a move away from Anfield, going on a holiday following his exertions in South Africa.

"I have met with Fernando," he confirmed. "I found him to be a very pleasant man and we had a nice conversation.

"As far as we are concerned, he is a Liverpool player and we want him to remain a Liverpool player."

He added: "My conversation with him was only short because I had to leave to come to the training camp in Switzerland.

I told him (Steven Gerrard) I supported the club's policy that we don't want to sell our best players and have to start building again

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson

"We spoke about football, the World Cup, his injury, and I told him how much I am looking forward to working with him.

"Christian Purslow [Liverpool managing director] was also at the meeting and chatted to Fernando for a lot longer after I left but my chat with him was only about football matters."

Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League last season as they failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Their poor campaign and the club's financial state, which sees them up for sale and believed to be in debt to the tune of about £350m, resulted in speculation concerning the futures of Gerrard, Torres and Mascherano.

But, despite admitting a "disenchanted" mood within the squad since taking over after the exit of former Reds boss Rafael Benitez, Hodgson is determined to keep his key players to restore Liverpool's on-pitch fortunes.

Gerrard, 30, would be pivotal to his plans and Hodgson said: "I have met with Steven and thought the talks were positive.

"We are in a situation where we hear our players are being courted by other teams but it is all just rumours.

"What we haven't had is a club wanting to buy Steven Gerrard.

"I told him I supported the club's policy that we don't want to sell our best players and have to start building again."

On another forum that I wont mention, they have said in response to this that it means nothing cos he doesnt say torres has said he's staying, & also that as he says Purslow stayed behind to chat to Torres that Purslow was telling him we have an offer from Chelsea & are going to start negotiating.

No, really, they are.

Well, I'm gonna take it to mean 'Torres and Gerrard are staying'.
That's exactly what *they* want you to believe though.

Now I am all confused, but no Way ROY would put his credibility on the line and say they are staying if they are going - right (needs validation on this one..)

Jeezzeess, so because Purslow chatted to Torres it means that we are going to sell him??

How fucking stupid is that?! It couldn't be that Purslow talked to him about the clubs future plans, which is what Torres want to know, and what Roy can't talk to much about since he's just joined us....

The paranoia on some of the forums are extreme.

Roy: the star players aren't for sale. They're staying.

The fans: He's saying they're not for sale. It's lies, they're going. Oh, an Fernando talked to Purslow the snake, he must be going now!!

Jeezzess H. Christ.

Oh, and Mascher deserves a punch in the nose. Just sell the ungrateful fucker. I'm tired of his antics and childish behaviour.

Fair play to Hodgson, I don't know what more he can say than Torres is not for sale. Which is what he said.

Roy is doing what he must and getting on with the job. I expect nothing less.

Give him a chance to get on with it and judge him by the results.

Sorry I'm with Rawk and the SOS bellends on this one.
That's a horrible interview. 'Ask Christian Purslow' 'I havnt received any assurances' 'I was obliged to leave'
Christ!

So, it would have been much better if Roy had said they're maybe for sale, are for sale or we don't know what to do with the duo at all?

Can't believe that because our managing director talks to our star striker then suddenly his leaving? Dear oh dear.

It's becoming pretty obvious that Hodgson's been told in no uncertain terms what comes under his remit and what doesn't. I have no problem with that in theory - Rafa's politicking got on my nerves towards the end, and I'm sure it didn't help the situation at all. If I believed, as many clearly do, that Purslow is a 'snake' and is trying to bring our club down, then I'd be worried. But for me, he's just the managing director, and I don't see any major evidence that he's done anything wrong so far.

Let's just wait and see what happens...
Yes it would have been better if he'd said that OBVIOUSLY! That's EXACTLY what I meant.

Tell me what you ment then? Cause I'm a bit curious.

Why on earth do people think that just because Purslow met him, it will result in a sale.

My take on the press conference is Roy was there to talk football and Purslow was there to let Torres know what's going on with regards to the sale of the club and to reassure him that a significantly higher transfer kitty is just around the corner.

Heh, thats just awful mate. I'm just curious to why everyone thinks negative in every situation. I could very well be wrong, but I've come to the conclusion that I don't care anymore. If they want to leave, then fine. Leave. The club will be here regardless.

just heard it on the radio. Now i have never bought into the loony theories but 'you'd have to ask christian purslow about any assurances as he spoke to him for longer after i was obliged to leave' doesn't sound great!

Just saw and heard the interview again, and I still can't see what all the fuss is about tbh. Whats strange about refering to CP since he had a longer chat with Nando? And so what if Roy had to leave, I'm guessing he had to fly to Switzerland as we're currently training there..

If we're going to sell him, why on earth would Roy take the time to fly out to where Fernando is holidaying for a talk anyway? That would be the most needless flights and waste of time ever.

Still, I'm only a naive fan.

Where's it say that? I've read the fucking thing three times & can't see that anywhere.

Wouldn't you want to talk to Purslow & Broughton if you were Torres?

At any rate, I agree with TheBunnyman about Hodgson's clearly defined function.

I also agree with Herr that this interview wasn't good. It doesn't fill me with paranoia, it just doesn't really assure me that Torres isn't going anywhere. Everyone at the club has already stated they don't want to sell him. The question is whether he wants to go, and whether the club is happy to accept him going, in that event. Restating "he's not for sale" without stating "Torres says he's staying" is meaningless, and Hodgson hasn't said anything that gives that assurance. The title of the piece is more persuasive than the content.

Vinny O'Connor who does the press conferences for SSN;

On SSN, saying he has spoke to Hodgson today and the main points are
1, He has spoken to Torres personally but Torres gave no assurances he will be here next season, also Purslow is still with Torres to persuade him to stay.
2, He is hopeful Gerrard will stay, although we have received no bids.
3, Masch has not returned any of Hodgson's calls or messages.
4, We are in the market for players.

Hodgson was being far too honest for his own good and basically explained to everyone that he has no real authority and that he can't even get certain players to speak to him, let alone commit their futures. It was pretty cringeworthy and I really don't know what he was thinking by giving such an interview. Quite bizarre.

"I have tried to reach him to make clear I am happy to talk with him at his convenience."

I still can't quite get over that.
