General UK politics

They took the hit straight away with the winter fuel allowance stuff. That’ll be one of the most unpopular policies.

Then once badenoch starts chatting shit they’ll lose more voters.

An acquaintance of mine who's quite senior in the local constituency Conservative Association reckons Cleverly was the only candidate worth voting for in their leadership election. In her view Badenoch will make a good first impression but it's anyone's guess how things will go from there, as Badenoch is tough but not as clever as she herself thinks she is.

The question then is, how did they let Shapps run the Cleverly campaign?
Cleverly was miles ahead, and seems they offered someone else their votes in a game of strategy that backfired.

Some of the media coverage after Cleverly was voted out of the race suggested that he wasn't genuinely far ahead at all, and that quite a few votes which were promised to him before the ballot which knocked him out were never actually going to come his way. Maybe that's what prompted the kind of decisions you describe.

Gonna be interesting to see who Badenoch now fetches into the Shadow Cabinet. Given the number of Tory MPs who either resigned before the last election or were defeated in it, and the fact that she beat most of the other remaining big hitters to get the leadership, she may find herself with quite a small pool to fish in.

Those leadership contests they have really do bring out the cloak and daggers of politics. It's intriguing but also a bit miserable at the same time.

The plan was clearly to get unpopular stuff done quickly and blame it all on the Tories.

The second part of that hasn't worked out as well as they would have hoped, as not enough people believed the black hole stuff and Labour overestimated how popular they are.

They have also handled their media extraordinarily poorly on various other issues.

That said, they will definitely recover. The extent will be determined by the impact of the unpopular things, which we won't quite see for a little while.

I suspect that it picks itself to a degree.

She will offer jobs to the five who lost, and some will accept if only to show unity for a while, whereas others won't, such as Cleverly.

A few other current Shadow Cabinet members will quit (Hunt and probably Dowden).

She'll have promised a few positions to her supporters. She'll have to fulfill those.

Beyond that, she'll have to keep a lot of the current Shadow Cabinet for a while as she won't want to instantly create a new awkward squad on the backbenches.

Any positions left, she'll have to balance right and left and who is better to keep onside vs not wanting to be associated with. Examples, the likes of Braverman and Williamson.

The problems obviously come when people quit etc, which they always do. That is when the lack of people becomes an issue.

Yeah I saw that.
My favourite thing he tweets is hows hes actually still in the centre re politics, it's just that the left have moved so far left that he's now on the 'right'
before retweeting right wing pieces.

I hadn't opened twitter for ages but wanted the lowdown on these contract talks. Had two notifications, both for tweets from him that I might be interested in. I've blocked him ages ago. Such a bin fire that place now.

My notifications are usually that I'm now being followd by some bot.

Usually porn bots follow me, which is exciting
These must be porn bots too but they're pretty boring... unless I'm being followed by vanilla porn bots. I must spice up my search history.
