Does a formation really make that much difference or is it about good players?

When Strachan left Scotland recently, I read Alec McLeish saying "I used to play 3 at the back 15 years ago now Conte is doing it". Clearly, most of us would have Conte before Alec but, is there a point there?

Do managers stumble on formations given the players they have? Or do they have a method in mind that they mould players to?

My personal opinion is that most managers aren't that clever. They fit players and see if it works. Rafa's 4-2-3-1 was an accident wasn't it?

Conte did well last season, is he a genuis or was that accidental?

You just work with what you've got, don't you ?
It's when you try and build a team to fit that formation you get fucked.

Ultimately, you just buy good players who fit your ideology, not buy players to fit a system

I was having that debate over the weekend and after much analysis we decided our players are shit

Look at the goals we concede. How many can you point to someone and say, he was shit? Nearly all of them. Gifts. It's the players

It's not accidental when Conte has played 3 at the back in previous jobs. He switched to four when he first arrived, got beat by us and Arsenal and swiftly changed back to what he knows best

It's not quite the same as Rodgers' desperate throw of the dice when he did it with us

And it's this simple. We are mediocre all over the pitch.

There's more to it than just the formation. It's how the players are instructed to act within that shape, how much flexibility they have to maneuver, the transitions between attack and defending - these are what managers can impact and instill.

Formations make a massive difference but in conjunction with tactics, players, motivation, confidence and all the above for the opposition too.

Granted when you start your pro licences in Australia they will only work within the confines of 4-3-3 and you cannot deviate from this until you have your degree ffs.
