Does a formation really make that much difference or is it about good players?
When Strachan left Scotland recently, I read Alec McLeish saying "I used to play 3 at the back 15 years ago now Conte is doing it". Clearly, most of us would have Conte before Alec but, is there a point there?
Do managers stumble on formations given the players they have? Or do they have a method in mind that they mould players to?
My personal opinion is that most managers aren't that clever. They fit players and see if it works. Rafa's 4-2-3-1 was an accident wasn't it?
Conte did well last season, is he a genuis or was that accidental?
