Two footballers were charged today in connection with the same nightclub brawl which saw Steven Gerrard accused of assault.

Accrington Stanley goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin, 28, and the club's midfielder, Robert Grant, 18, were both charged with affray, Merseyside Police said.

A third man, Paul McGrattan, 31, was also charged today with affray and assaulting a police officer.

Liverpool and England player Gerrard, 28, remains on bail after appearing in court charged with assault and affray last month.

He was arrested in the early hours of 29 December after a disturbance at the Lounge Bar nightclub in Southport, Merseyside.

Company director Marcus McGee, 34, from Churchtown, Southport, required hospital treatment after receiving facial injuries in the incident.

Gerrard, a father of two who is married to model Alex Curran, 26, was at the bar with friends to celebrate Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United earlier that day.

Gerrard's solicitor indicated at his first court appearance that he would plead not guilty to the charges against him.

He is due before North Sefton Magistrates again on 20 March.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said Dunbavin, of Guildford Road, Southport, Grant, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland, Merseyside, and McGrattan, of Linden Drive, Huyton, Merseyside, will appear at North Sefton magistrates next Monday.

Two men, a 33-year-old from Huyton and an 18-year-old from Roby, Merseyside, remain on bail pending further inquiries.

WTF is going on here ?! It sounds like a gang fight !

I'm surprised some of those involved haven't sold their stories to the papers explaining what happened?

So the bloke who allegedly got attacked by Gerrard, would be facing what charge exactly for going to the papers? :🙂

Didn't Dunabvin used to be on our books as a young player?
Yes, a goalie. Probably the same youth team as Stevie.

I suppose it is a good sign Gerrard hasn't been charged

He has been.

Until the case has been heard in court ' trying to pervert the course of justice' perhaps. That might be a stretch however if not that undoubtedly he has been warned that talking to the press is not permitted and he would face a charge of contempt.

The press could do nothing with it until there is a verdict. It's always like that when a court case is involved or likely to be brought.

Also, a nightclub?! Really? Fuck off is that a nightclub.

Accrington Stanley?? Who are they?
Are you quoting the baked beans commercial?

If you really don't know, they are one of the 12 clubs that founded the Football League in 1888.

The club ceased to exist when it became insolvent in 1962, but was resurrected a few years later. Played non-league football for many years, but eventually got back into Division 2 of the Football League in the 2005/06 season. 🙂

Ah yes. I was thinking of the John Barnes one.

"After 90 minutes of pure hell etc etc... "

Then he kicks the thing into the bin.

Peter Crouch is in an ad as Jesus? Fucking hell, that's a big cruxifix!

Hopefully the trial won't go on too long but its a hindrnace we could do wothout.

LIVERPOOL skipper Steven Gerrard will stand trial alone after his six co-defendants admitted their part in a nightclub brawl.

The trial of the 29-year-old England midfielder, from Formby, was expected to get underway at Liverpool Crown Court later today.

But the Huyton-born player, who is charged with affray, will no longer be joined in the dock by the others.

Yesterday they pleaded guilty to affray and threatening behaviour charges.

Details of their pleas could only be made public today after the Recorder of Liverpool, Judge Henry Globe QC, lifted reporting restrictions.

The charges followed a brawl at a Southport bar which left a businessman needing hospital treatment.

Dad-of-two Marcus McGee, 34, suffered a broken tooth and cuts to his face in the alleged fracas in the resort’s Lounge Inn in the early hours of December 29.

Accrington Stanley reserve goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin, 29, of Guildford Road, Southport; Stanley winger Bobby Grant, 19, of Enstone Avenue, Litherland; John Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road; Ian Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue, Paul McGrattan, 31, of Linden Drive, all Huyton, all pleaded guilty to affray

John McGrattan, 34, of Rimmer Avenue, Huyton, denied affray but admitted using threatening behaviour.

David Turner QC, prosecuting, told the court their pleas were acceptable to the prosecution. Any other charges faced by the defendants will lie on the file and not be proceeded with, Mr Turner added.

Judge Globe provisionally fixed a Friday, August 7 sentencing date for the six.

Married dad-of-two Gerrard pleaded not guilty to affray at an earlier plea and case management hearing.

He was out celebrating Liverpool’s 5-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United when trouble allegedly flared at the bar.

It would be difficult for him to change his plea now. He has publically said he didn't do it and he told the club and Benitez he didn't do it.
His position at the club and as part of the England team would be damaged doubly so now if he admitted it because he would be admitting both to beating up people in nightclubs and to previously lying about it.

With this in mind, of course it could just be that these guys are now prepared to take the rap and will testify at Gerrard's trial that he had nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately, whatever he did was caught by CCTV and they have been looking at action replays today in Court! Stevie was compared to a top-ranking boxer.

Maybe Stevie will win the "Brawl of the Month" competition.

It would be interesting to hear comments from Hansen and Lawro.

:🙂

They showed it on TV news. Stevie was at the other end of the bar from the camera, but you can see him throwing punches.

The ITN news (on the web) only shows SG's friend elbowing. No footages of SG throwing punches. Unless prosecution has credible witnesses, SG walks.
