I actually think a big name player would get a huge amount of flak. Firstly, surely the FA would get involved, which they evidently haven't with Flanagan, and dish out a Suarez/Cantona length ban, because there'd be too much media (and probably political) pressure for them not to. Second, that action and absence would probably get all the usual agents and clubs buzzing around, as they did with Suarez, looking to get him to move elsewhere. In this day and age, when every single opposition ground would echo with abuse for the player, the issue of sacking him would soon get obscured by all the other stuff.
