Loving how Kenny is trusting these young guys in big games, really excited about the prospect of academy starlets actually being blooded through to the first team.
Kenny doesn't have much choice
He had the choice of playing Carra and Wilson at fullback and the Greek and Skrtel in the centre

I totally agree. My point was that he had the option to go for more experience but instead put his trust in the two lads.

True, but you get the feeling he's doing a great job of instilling a sense of confidence and fearlessness into them.

Exactly. Flanno and Robbo will learn so much from their experience yesterday.
Flanno injuring Carra and having to cope with that. Robinson having to handle the pace of Walcott.
Both of them experiencing first hand that it's not over til' the fat lady sings.

Had a quick look at the game during my break and I noticed that Lucas and Spearing were very quick to move out to the flanks to protect our young fullbacks. I think it's why we played so deep during the entire game, Dalglish didn't want to put too much pressure on them.

Also noticed that they barely got forward in the game. Barely any crosses. Granted, they played at the emirates for the first time so I'm not complaining.

Soon enough we're gonna start demanding that they bomb forward like Johnson and I think it's too soon. Tbf I think they need another year of reserve football and occasional first team football.

Kenny doesn't have much choice
I think it's a mix of both Kenny feeling compelled, and then being encouraged by his first choice.

Against West Brom, with Johnson and Agger still fit, Kenny had the chance to take either or both of Robbo and Flanno with the squad, but there was no place for both of them on matchday. Instead, he took Sotos and Wilson. So, when he had a choice, he still went with picking senior guys (slightly more, in Wilson's case) who'd play out of position (Carra at RB, Wilson at LB, if required, and which actually transpired).

As it happened, Sotos yielded another cheap penalty, and I think that finally forced Kenny to rethink about the Greek's value down the final stretch - could he continue to take the risk and shift Carra out to RB and entrust the centre to Skrtel and Sotos? I think, like Cole and Maxi before him (see how many minutes they've played in the last 6 games), Kenny showed his hand by leaving Sotos out of the squad against City.

So in a sense, I think he was compelled to pick Flanagan as he wanted Carra back at CB because he couldn't trust Sotos anymore. Flanno's successful debut probably gave him the confidence and encouragement to pick Robbo for this trip. The surprise for me was Wilson not being in the squad, instead of Sotos.

Robinson bombed up on an overlap as soon as he came on and then I think someone had a word. Robinson is much more of an attacking FB than Flanaghan it seems to me, though I've no problem with either of their approaches.

i didn't mind robinson sticking back. Walcott was always going to be a handful so to make him stay back was the right call

Robinson only had one nervy moment. He stalled on his clearance after Pepe made that excellent save on Van Persie.

So we all agree then that robinson is quick and solid?

Swift Firmly Robinson

Fuck of Themn ;-)

Absolutely- the Emirates wasn't the game to go flying up the wing every couple of mins. Nice he has it in the locker though.

immense tactical display from kenny and an assured reserved performance from robbo. Now lets see if he can kick on from there and start against the brum and batter the flank!

Ayala playing for Derby now on SKY Sports 1 against QPR.

Almost home now and true to word 3 pints to celebrate a hard earned point. MOTM Ayala. Tight game we pressed and gave them no space to play in. Could have won but for Kenny save but draw fair enough. Good solid performance against a decent team but they didnt look that great. Their fans not at all happy - hard games to come to secure promotion and they clearly wanted 3 today

I'm very excited! We don't have anything to play for, for the rest of the season, and therefore we should focus on getting these young guys ready to play a part in next season. If they can fill out squad positions, then we don't need to worry so much about depth and go and buy good first teamers.

I also think Ayala will play for the Spanish national team at some point...lad has ability and he is quietly going about it in the right direction, everytime I have seen him play, he has been better, and he is quite strong in defending high balls too...

Robinson highlights.

one should always take a clip reel with a grain of salt, but...look at that tackle on Walcott on 2:16. He's only 17 for Pete's sakes, and he's slotted in and is mostly composed. Suddenly, Kelly, Flanagan, Spearing, Robinson look like first teamers. If these lads are somewhat consistent, it seems suddenly like the biggest challenge this summer is finding and grooming a successor to Steevie.

It aint Shelvey that's for sure. My money's on Coady.

I don't think they have to be taken with a "pinch of salt". These clips highlight the good and the bad because they just show clips where the player was involved in play, making them different to the typical YT compilations.

The fact that this can be mistaken for one is because Robinson was almost flawless against Walcott.

yeah, there's something about coady. not his out and out ability (as he is still finding his way) but his leadership is patently obvious even at a young age (although he lost the plot v manu in the fa youth cup).

Just wanted to add that Flanno is looking better and better with every game.
The early jitters seems to be gone and he's actually taking on players now and going forward.
Played a role in Maxi's third goal yesterday and made a great dash into the penalty box in the first half.

still too early for me, as you'd expect from kids those age, one minute they are looking very good and next a bit jittery - flanno has done well, but in the long-term I think robinson is the better prospect as he looks technically more accomplished.

That's what everyone keeps saying but Dalglish is still sticking with Flanno despite him playing on the left since Johnson came back.
Personally I think Flanagan is the better of the two.
